Very innovated musically and visually. Daniel and his band gave an excellent performance..
Loved the music and the sound quality. I also had a very good view from my seat in the ground floor.
This was the perfect balance between old hits and new ones, just outstanding!
horribly loud, (and was wearing custom ear protection)! What a total let down!
Regret Ms. Bulat's voice was difficult to understand and depended on volume rather than clarity. We know Daniel is capable of some fine music but some of the new stuff especially the "dubbing" computer was to me a disappointment.
I've seen him before but this concert was special right from him joining his opening act Rocco DeLuca and staying for his whole set to his holding the light and talking to the audience between songs to him coming back out to play for another twenty minutes - and inviting Rocco DeLuca to join him - AFTER the house lights and music had been on!! It was incredible. And he was in fine form playing his steel in such a haunting gorgeous way that the whole audience was enraptured. It wasn't just a regular concert - it was a musical adventure. The room was full of musicians and I think we all learned a thing or two from the master that night. Bravo!
What a boring waste of time...so now Daniel's into the beats. Yawn. Drummer saved what there was to save of the day. The audience obviously mostly felt the same way judging from the tepid response. Things perked up a bit in the middle when he played a few real songs. I give it two stars only because opener Rocco DeLuca's voice was a revelation, although he could vary his presentation beyond dirge-like a bit.
Daniel Lanois opened the show with a set of 'new direction' electronica based 'signature' tracks. A departure from his norm, the music was still infused with his reverberating bass and singing slide guitar sound. The concert ended with a set of some of best classics. His passion shone through it all - again. Definitely a different style - his new stuff.
Loved the show! Always blown away when Daniel and Brian Blade hook up. They are very simpatico. Brian's so fluid on the drums and always, always puts the right rhythm down. Brilliant! Daniel's new work is just so Daniel. Always forward leaning. Wish the show was another hour longer! Come back soon! PS - Great new visual aspect to Daniel's show. An expansive artist stretching for new horizons.
Daniel Lanois is a pure genius. He is so talented. He's up there with all the greats. He is a true legend. I would definitely go see him again in Toronto. He's put Canada on the musical map and Canadians should be proud of that no doubt! Thank you Mr. Lanois for your amazing contributions to the music industry. You are a true musician.
Incredible show with a great variety of musicians. I thoroughly enjoyed the alternative styling presented by Lanois. I would go to this show every night if I could
The opening act Lonnie Holley was an insult. Although I found the music at times grating, I tried to have an open mind at the beginning, appreciating the improvisational jazz nature of his voice and the music. However, not too far into his set I deduced that he seemed to be making up the lyrics as he went along and they were nonsensical, in some cases self-indulgent and almost intolerable to listen to. I actually think he has quite a strong voice and perhaps could be worth listening to if he had more regard for his audience. After such a trying first act, I tried to "go on the journey" suggested by Daniel Lanois during his own set but found this difficult -- the volume was very loud, to the extent that the room was vibrating and my heart was being beat for me by the bass notes which was unsettling. I had been prepared for some instrumental only pieces based on Daniel's latest album; however, I wasn't prepared the deliberate hollow and "soul-less' nature of these particular pieces which is definitely not my preference for listening. For the first time ever, I ended up leaving the concert early (as did some others) and, unfortunately, missed Daniel playing some of his older, soulful and beautiful music.
Lonnie Holly blew me away - waht a great soulful / blues singer! the only thanks I give Daniel is for choosing the opener Of course Daniel chose to do what Daniel chooses to do and that was performing the entire Flesh and Machine album -- if it wasn't for the drummer I think I would of walked out like many others did.
It is always a special night to see Daniel Lanois and Brian Blade do their work live onstage. Flesh and Machine is a new release from Daniel that is all instrumental. Brought to the stage and it gets even better. The work between Lanois/Blade/Wilson is unforgettable. Mixing their sounds live on the fly. I have seen Daniel too many times to count and this was one of the best! This tour needs a live CD!
March 23/12..Toronto...Best duo ever. They have a synergy between them that shows they are highly passionate about their music. When they play together, they are in a world nobody can touch.
A great night at the Black Box theatre watching two of the best. A show to remember!
This was a great show and very well executed. The idea of melding organic local foods with beautiful folk music is a fabulous theme. Hope it turns into an annual event.
The Harvest Picnic was an amazing event. The food and beer was awesome, local and affordable. The talent was absolutely amazing. The venue was beautiful and event very organized. Dan Lanois put in a fantastic effort as event coordinator, even playing in the sound board tent between acts to keep the music flowing. His set was superb. I loved Sarah Harmer as well, a very sweet voice and great live. I have to say though, Ray Lamontagne was absolutely astounding. I don't want to say he stole the show because the show up to that point was more than worth the ticket price but you just can't capture the raw talent and power of his voice and delivery on a record. His band was amazing as well - just superb. After this show I will go see him any time he comes to Ontario for as long as he is making music and touring!
Beginning with my two criticisms which was that there was no seniors parking closer to the concert venue and the line up to be checked in was way too long and slow, slow, slow! the rest of my review is outrageously positive and glowing. Fabulous music, vendors and site. I came mainly to hear Emmylou Harris and she paled in comparison to some of the other artists. John Ellison, Ray Lamontagne, Sarah Harmer, and Daniel Lanois (of course) were superb!!! I am looking forward to going again next year. Please let there be a next year plus many more.
My husband Walter and I just loved this event! We got to hear so many wonderful singers and most especially Daniel Lanois and Emmylou Harris! The music was awesome and the food was wonderful, being organic and fresh! What a beautiful setting for a festival like this! We plan to return again next year and tell folks not to miss it! I hope Emmylou and Daniel Lanois will return next year!
