About

Declared "one of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history" by the Washington Post, DEAREVAN HANSEN is the first musical to take a groundbreaking look--from the point of view of both the parents and young people--at our complex, interconnected, and social media-filled lives. Evan Hansen is a high school student who always feels like he's on the outside looking in. Evan finally gets what so many of us are searching for--the chance to finally fit in. What follows is a poignant, funny, and powerful musical about how even though it can be hard, we can find each other--and ourselves--along the way. Including some of the most iconic musical theatre songs from the last decade, including "You Will Be Found," "Waving Through A Window," and "For Forever," DEAR EVAN HANSEN features an uplifting score by the Tony®, Grammy®, and Oscar® winning team behind The Greatest Showman, La La Land, and "Only Murders in the Building" Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and a book by Tony Award-winner Steven Levenson.

  • PS: Point Well Taken

by Chris on 2022-08-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Given the topic, I found the production to be moving & thoughtful - every high school student should see this show. The characters were interesting & played with distinct perspectives I could relate to. The situation evolved from initial reactions of shock & despair into a "what can we do?" & then into the practical "let's not waste this moment; we have stuff to get out there!" I would hope that adolescents would take away the impact that suicide has on family, friends, communities. Also, a good reminder that loners are just that, alone, disconnected & feeling unwanted. Early recognition & interventions to make socializing normal needs to be a focus for parents, schools & mental health providers. Production note: transitions worked smoothly but I found the sound level to be uneven at times.

Beyond expectations! Amazing in every way. Sound. Visual. Performance. Duration theatre comfort. Clean everything was perfect and can’t wait to go again.

  • Amazing

All I could think of as I left was how tired Evan Hansen must be after his performance. He sang hard. He sang loud. He sang with such emotion (s)! I was exhausted by his energy. The rest of the cast was equally amazing. I wasn’t sure if I would be disappointed as I watched the movie but this experience was nothing short of amazing! I loved it and recommend it. Well done cast!

  • so gooood!!!

i’ve seen clips of the broadway performances on youtube but that is NOTHING compared to seeing it all in real life. my seat was pretty high up but there were zero issues with sound or sight. everything was actually perfect. my friend (who did not know the song’s lyrics) said the music was a little too loud, making it hard to understand what was being said but as someone who knows all the songs off by heart, i found the loud music just made the feels hit harder (definitely be wary if you have sensory issues though) the choreography was great and i loved all the little stylistic choices in the set design. 10/10 can’t wait to go back to see something else!!!

  • Expected more!

The cast was ok. The main character played well-but could improve his singing. It should not have been advertised as a “broadway” as clearly the majority of the cast is not based on Broadway! The sound could have been louder as it was difficult to hear the voices from Mezzanine floor. Overall, Toronto casts are better!

  • Amazing Production! A Must see!!

by H. M. on 2022-08-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

We loved everything about this production...Again so great to be in the theatre LIVE!!! This production is so timely....and it is a show that everyone should see. We need to hear what is being said in this musical.....Excellent performers all the way around ~ cast was well chosen. Very emotional and moving at times and yet great laughs in other segments! The unanimous standing ovation at the end speaks very loudly as to the quality of this production. Would see it again in a heartbeat! Wish that all high school students could have a chance to see this...if I was still teaching (now retired) my entire music department would be seeing it....so many life lessons.

Beautiful theatre, well constructed which can be rare over here. The show was impeccable, sound and lightning. Really good experience!
