too old to rock and roll

by grinder on 2011-06-07Casino Rama - Orillia

Gee that was a big disapointment. The orchestra was a big distraction foulling the bands attempts at reprising old hits. These guys are done. I am a fan of this band and have been for over fourty years, too bad.

. Venue perfect. Great playing by the band but the lead singers time has come and gone. Played 80% of the hits Nice light show. Had a little trouble with the signature song Smoke On The Water. Glad I went to see a classic rock band.

    Deep Purple Was Forgettable!

by WhitbyNoName on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

Deep Purple - Fri. June 3rd. In 40 yrs, I've never walked out of a show. We left after 4 songs. My hubby and I like loud music, but the band was ear-breaking loud in a small venue and they were not cohesive. Everyone playing by themselves, like they were trying to see who could play the loudest. Ian Gillan cannot sing like he used to... but still tried to sing like he used to and it just didn’t work for me. Totally understand when artists change their vocals due to age, and they are forgiven, Ian should have. If they had cut their volume even ¼ , it would have been more enjoyable, I'm sure. If you didn't know DP tunes, you wouldn't have known what he was singing. The lighting was very 70's and there was a heavy strobe influence which was pretty annoying. 20 yrs old and under the influence may have made a dif lol. The orchestra was non-existent. If they were playing, you couldn't hear them over the b...and noise and you couldn't see them because they were back and in shadows all the time. I never would have gone except for the orchestra backing them, so overall it was a disappointment. I like it when the old bands bring their music to-date, but there are very few that can "redo" the 70's and get away with it. I wasn't impressed. Remember - our opinion only!

    Forget the high notes.

    by dk65 on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

The music was very good, at times, and the orchestra added to the overall sound. The vocals were okay, but he is well past his prime and had difficulty hitting the high notes. I would have liked to hear a few more of the classics from Machine Head. The guitar solo was memorable.

    Not great

    by Lu1959 on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

Sorry, I know vocalist Ian Gillan will be 66 this year, but his voice was horrible. He can't sing like he used to. Without him, the band is doomed. The only things that saved the show was lead guitarist Steve Morse and the orchestra. Ian, get that voice back into shape or hang it up.

    My favourite band!

by Peekie on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

I have waited 26 years to finally be able to see Deep Purple. I love the band, love the music. They played for close to 2 hours and it was a good concert. However I felt bad for the lead singer Ian Gillan. He did a great job but it seemed like he was struggling with his breath for some songs. He just couldn't do the screaming he used to do either. They still rock though and I love them!

    Deep Purple - loud

    by Joanne56 on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

Well the problem with the concert, it was loud and distorted and if you didn't recognize the song, well it was just noise. I wish the guitar, bass, organ was turned down, symphony turned up and sound crisper and clearer. My problem was that most of the songs, I did not recognize from not being a "huge" fan, or simply that it was again distorted sound. The one song "hush" played near the end was okay, but not what I remember from the 70's. I would recommend the show to a fan, but not go see it again. I left during the last song to make sure I could get out of the parking lot. Disappointing....conert

Deep Purple was very dissapointing !

by Anonymous on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

Dissapointing performance by the lead singer. He kept dissapearing and coming back looking drunk. His vocals were weak and unspectacular. The symphony accomaniement was unneccessary. Drowned out much of the band's talents. However, the guitarists, drummer and keyboard player were the salvation to the show. Their outstanding talent was a pleasure to watch and hear. However, it was boring and I couldn't wait for the end.

Disappointing front-man f or Deep Purple

by Anonymous on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

Great musicianship from the band - Steve Morse was awesome - poor lead singer... he did not stay with the band for the length of one song - he was rushing backstage at every moment he could (we can only guess why) - it was obvious the band had to cover for him a few times where he did not return on time - he did not engage the crowd... really poor performance on his part. The sound was mediocre to start but improved during the night.

    Deep Purple can still rock!

by Ozfan on 2011-06-06Casino Rama - Orillia

So the singer can't hit the high notes any more--no big deal with the awesome orchestra backing them up. Played all their best songs and really entertained. Great sound, great show. Solos by each musician were incredible.

I should have seen them decades ago

    by devotee1000000 on 2011-06-05Casino Rama - Orillia

I'm grateful that I was able to experience a live performance of Deep Purple who have a large catalog of material from which to play. And Gillan, Glover and Paice are original members. The new keyboardist is multi talented, classically and otherwise as was Lord - and the guitarist duplicated some of Blackmore's solos nicely. But it's difficult for Gillan to reach so many high notes - altho the audience was appreciative. And the 30 piece orchestra was hard to distinguish when Purple was belting it out. Still there were magic moments throughout the evening. The opened with Highway Star - closed with Smoke on the Water (I think - trying to remember) but came back and performed Hush, Black Knight which included solos from the very talented Glover and Paice. Deep Purple made a mark in the history of Rock and Roll - wished I saw them earlier in their careers - but glad I was still able to catch them.
