As a long-time Dr. Hook fan, I anxiously looked forward to the nostalgic trip I would enjoy at the Dr. Hook show in Edmonton this past Friday. Now that it has occurred, I wish I would have gotten sick that night so as not to tarnish my memory of the golden songs they sang 20-30 years ago.
In short, this was the worst concert I have ever attended.
Overall, the sound quality was terrible. That's the good news. The lack of clarity helped hide Ray Sawyer's lost voice. I loved Ray Sawyer back in the day, but he obviously missed his stop about 10 years ago. His voice lacks any power and has no range. He was off key and out of time almost all night long. The only time that any song reminded me of what it was supposed to sound like is when Ray was quiet and let the audience sing the last half of A Little Bit More.
After a couple songs and some talk, my companion asked me if Ray was drunk or stoned. He slurred and mumbled so much he sounded as if he was. He forgot song lyrics at a few points and ended one song prematurely. The band did its best to try to salvage the show, most notably when Ray attempted Otis Redding's Sittin On A Dock, then was unable to finish the whistling verses. The band tried to pick it up while Ray regained his breath. However, over all, due to the poor sound and Ray being so off tune, it was very difficult to recognize even the biggest Dr. Hook tunes. It sounded horrible.
Dr Hook was a wonderful, fun band, and Ray Sawyer was a terrific lead. However, the key word is "WAS". It's time to call it a day, Ray. Let the wonderful old memories live on. Please do current fans a favor, as well as your health. Please stop playing.
