Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

    Good NFC Tilt

Strong defensive struggle. Close into fourth quarter as Atlanta Falcons pulled away for the 23-16 win.

    Lions - 49ers Dame

    by sunny61 on 2011-10-19Ford Field - Detroit

Our club seats were great. It's an awesome stadium. I have been going for about 5 years now. Stadium drinks and food are pricey but that is nothing new.

    Niners!

Awesome game. Jim Schwartz - stop crying you big baby. If Harbaugh's celebration and "backslap" offended you maybe you should coach soccer.

    Detroit Lions

by Dread on 2011-09-20Ford Field - Detroit

Lions 48-3 over Kansas City. Great game and the first time I used Ticket master for game tickets. I was a little unsure as I approached the gate. You hear so many horror stories of people getting burned with bogus tickets, howver, Ticketmaster delivered on a great game and a great day for my wife and I with no hassles.

by selppin on 2011-01-04Ford Field - Detroit

As I was cheering for the team that lost, it was still an exciting game. Great to finally see the Lions make a comeback.

    Good NFC North Battle

    by Fridge85 on 2011-01-01Ford Field - Detroit

A good defensive battle between two NFC North rivals. Ford Field is a nice indoor venue that keeps you out of the elements. Great sight lines in this modern stadium mean there are no bad seats in the house. Hightly recommend a visit to Ford Field for any NFL fan.

Don't get the All You Can Eat Seats!

by Anonymous on 2010-12-16Ford Field - Detroit

We were thoroughly disappointed with the all you can eat seats! The concession stands were horribly understaffed and seemed to work slowly to cause the lines to be long and discourage the people in line from getting what they wanted and in coming back for more. The burgers were small and cheap comparable to McDonald’s cheeseburgers found in Happy Meals. The fries were cold and little cheese was given with the nachos. The pretzels were small but tasty. Also beware that the concession stands close immediately at the end of the third quarter. We left our seats to get some more food and drinks at the end of the third quarter and they were already closed when we arrived. All I can say is that we did not get all we could eat as we left the game still hungry! I will not attend another event at Ford Field as I have been disappointed both of the times I have attended events here!

    Replay

by Gken on 2010-12-15Ford Field - Detroit

The one ,,huge complaint. Your replay ,,,on the big screen. As a football fan I would like to see ,each play again. . Being at the wrong end of the field,,you can't see . Then to have you camera scan ,the people. Seems odd.

    Lions - Packers Football

by Cousi on 2010-12-15Ford Field - Detroit

Although the game itself was kind of a "yawner" (7-3 final score), the facility is very nice and I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. At the concessions, for soft drinks and popcorn especially, it's a good deal where you pay one price and get refills...as many as you'd like. For some that's good but I wasn't a big fan of paying $6.00 for a soft drink or popcorn. Pretty easy to get in and out. The security keeps the lines moving and it was a fun experience. First time I had ever been to a football game and to Ford Field. Stadium staff are very friendly.

by billpayer on 2010-12-15Ford Field - Detroit

Dont accept seats in the corner section upstairs first few rows. There is a design fault in the stadium - in all other sections people entering the section turn immediately onto the stairs to reach their row/seat. But in these sections they have to walk directly infront of the entire front row of seats. Worse still the 'ushers' allow people to leave and enter all the time not just during breaks in p[lay. As a result those sat in rows 1-5 have their view of the game continually obstructed by folks onj their way to filing or emptying their bladders. Awful experience - waste of money - these eats should not be put on sale.

    Ford Field FANtastic

    by Howe9 on 2010-12-07Ford Field - Detroit

Ford Field is in a great location, close to the border. Seats were wonderful. I would recommend parking further from the stadium (Congress Ave) because traffic after the game is horrendous around the stadium.
