Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

This is probably the last year we go to the Thanksgiving game. For what you pay in ticket prices, I'd rather watch it on T.V.

the game was very exciting for three quarters and then we all know what happened but that's football. the stadium is so close to the border now and that is so kool and it makes it so much easier to get to it. now all we have to hope for is one of these days the lions well get better and start winning. thanks

    NFL refs need new prescriptions!

by FirmD on 2010-11-27Ford Field - Detroit

Ford Field is an incredible venue. It is clean, the staff is friendly, and they offer "bottomless" snacks and drinks at a reasonable cost. The game was amazing; however, the refs in the NFL are getting a little liberal in their interpretation of the "rule book". Essentially, the referees are making it up as they go. Anyone who has watched any Detroit Lions game this season can concur that the refs are just inventing calls even though replays are clearly showing the opposite of their decisions. Basically, this results in the outcome of every game to swing which ever way the NFL wants (i.e. every game's outcome is fixed).

    Great time

We had a great time at the football game in Detroit. Everyone in Detroit was very friendly and we found the Westin downtown to be an excellent hotel.

    The Lions lost their roar

by OldRockDog on 2010-11-10Ford Field - Detroit

It was an exciting first half as the Lions defense and the offense seemed to be clicking. However, the second half wasn't so great for Lions fans. They blew a ten point lead and eventually lost in overtime. The 80,000 people were very disappointed except for those wearing Jets shirts.

First Experience at an NFL Game

by Skeena on 2010-11-09Ford Field - Detroit

My son, two grandsons and myself drove from North of Toronto, Ontario, stayed overnight and then the GAME. We were all excited and wanted the Jets to win, but those Lion Fans are both GREAT, and wildly crazy. 60,000 nuts in under one roof, WOW!! Thanks Detroit for a fun day and a great experience. Ford Field is well worth the visit and I'm sure we'll be back.

    First NFL Game

by CanadianEaglesFan on 2010-09-21Ford Field - Detroit

Crossed the boarder to watch the Eagles take on the Lions. Had a great time and the outcome was fitting as the Lions made a big comeback only to break the hearts of their fans yet again. Ford Field, although smaller than most NFL stadiums was a nice venue to enjoy a game and was a nice change from Rogers Centre (Skydome). The atmosphere was good and the crowd got loud at the right moments. A lot of empty seats in the expensive sections was surprising though. Lions fans were friendly and knowledgeable and deserve better. Overall Detroit is a good place to watch a game and an even better place to see your favourite road team get a victory! Sorry Lions fans. GO EAGLES!!!

Great Game Between Lions & Eagles!!

    by DMac69 on 2010-09-21Ford Field - Detroit

As a fan of football my group of friends have been going to Buffalo for the last 6 years and decided to attend a game in Detroit this year. Well, the extra distance (about 2 hours further) was well worth it. The stadium was fantastic and the game was one of most entertaining we've seen! Just a great time overall.

Such a good time. Only problem was the event staff weren't able to answer my only question and was sent walking around the entire venue. Definitely will go again.

by ecusen on 2010-08-29Ford Field - Detroit

Overall, this was quite an enjoyable event. There was a problem at the parking gate, however. The attendants didn't recognize the Ticketmaster ticket saying that we'd already paid. It's very, very, very expensive parking, so I was quite concerned they were going to charge me again. Since my seatmate is handicapped, there's no way I could park elsewhere. After much concern, they decided to honour Ticketmaster's "odd" receipt. The parking itself was terrific, very close to the stadium and a godsend. The game - as always - was fun.

    Detroit lions vs chicago bears

by bruinfan on 2010-01-06Ford Field - Detroit

The venu was very nice. Ford field is a great newer stadium. We got the all you can eat seats. Food was average for quality. The advertisement for the offer said from game time until the end of the game. Yet the concession closed at the start of the 4th qtr. Many other food stands were still open while the all you can eat stand was closed. Not so sure I would recommend paying extra for all you can eat again. And where did they get such a hokey song / cheer after every score.

    cut the commerical time

by BOREDFAN on 2010-01-04Ford Field - Detroit

I thought most of the game was a bore. With all the commerical time-outs it killed any flow to the game.

Lions...another loss! But still a blast!

by Tonode on 2010-01-04Ford Field - Detroit

The stadium was fantastic - and we payed the extra for the lot parking...but it was well worth it (our parking was right outside the stadium door closest to our seats). We had a blast - despite the Lions loosing again (or still!)...very nice stadium and amenities. The only advice I would give is to leave a little extra time at the border because it took FOREVER to get through the tunnel in Windsor!
