DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

    Spudtastic!

by zipbolang on 2009-11-25The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Ive followed and supported Devo for 30 years; from cassettes, to vinyl to cd and dvd.... and this was my first time seeing them. Spectacular show, lights everything was perfect. The group is tighter than many professional rock acts I've seen........... I think the concept of one album a night was kind of cool but would have preferred to see them do a standard 2 hour show with more of their hits instead. I'm glad I saw the FREEDOM OF CHOICE night rather than ARE WE NOT MEN...great album, just would rather hear a mix.. The venue was professionally managed including the VIP program and that was more bang for your buck than I expected! Meet n greet, a very cool signed poster, smiley face bouncy balls, a VIP access patch....amazing swag! Bring them back!

    DEVO WAS FASHIONABLE LATE

by queensheen on 2009-11-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

The devo show was amazing! I thought the opening act was great - JP incorporated, I am actually watching his video's now on youtube as I type this. Thanks for introducing me to something new and interesting. I was not happy at how late DEVO went on stage, I was also not happy that they didn’t play whip it. However, as a big fan I was glad to hear all the other amazing hits. They seemed to be on there A-game even though I had heard rumors that Mark was sick. It was really nice to see DEVO in a smaller more intimate setting.

    Devo's new prime?

by zerobeat on 2009-11-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

They're a little less fat and way less sluggish than they were a few years ago. I would put this performance up against their best shows from the late 70's / early 80's. The new drummer Josh Freese is a huge improvement over David Kendricks (who replaced awesome drummer Alan Myers - nobody can touch his idiosyncratic style and manic precision). It all started way too late (soundcheck happened in front of the audience!), and opening act J.P. Incorporated needed to be either shorter or more varied in ideas. Just before Devo started, the room was boiling hot, oxygen was in short supply, people were cranky and chanting, and my legs were sore has hell. But 30 seconds into the first tune my energy level went back up to what it was 2+ hours previously when I entered the building. One curious thing: they played Gates of Steel, a song they would play the next day anyway. I wish they would have played something else.

Once (Twice) In a Life Time

by arteris on 2009-11-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Devo came to play and play hard, and they showed the eclectic crowd that ranged from men in their mid 40's, to punks in their late teens and twenty-something girls, that they still had the ability to get the crowd motivated and moving. The fan reaction was strong and the vibe was amazing, possibly due to the delay it took getting them on stage but once they took the stage they dominated unquestionably. Coming out in classic yellow jumpsuits which quickly got destroyed by the middle of the show. The boys were sweating buckets but never showing any signs of ceasing or slowing down which was phenomenal. Definitely a once in a life time experience, we'll see how tomorrow's performance of Freedom of Choice fares!

    De-evolution is real

by PanzerTankJones on 2009-11-04The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

The Music Box at the Fonda was a tightly-packed but appropriate venue for DEVO. There was a lot of dance activity on the floor level in front of the stage as well as plenty of balcony seating further removed from the action. The sound quality of the concert was a bit over-saturated but there were no other audio problems to speak of. The opening act was a kind of comedy a capella tested the limits of the bass output of the sound system. The main act came through clear and loud. DEVO performed with amazing energy and really got the crowd jumping to their music. They played through the entirety of their first album and followed with an encore composed of Gates of Steel and Smart Patrol / Mr. DNA. The whole show really blew me away and I wax extremely pleased to see the boys still had the chops to do it as well as the magnetism that got the crowd screaming "WE ARE DEVO!" at the top of their lungs. The meet & greet afterward was well worth the extra. The event was held on the roof lounge after the show which gave us a chance for some fresh air. My friends and I got to meet Mark Mothersbaugh and he was a wonderfully energetic presence. I got in to a little stare-off with him it left quite an impression on me. It was aces.
