About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diana was very classy!

by woshi on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I took my mom to see Diana Krall, as a Mother's Day gift. My Mom loves jazz, and we enjoyed it imensley. Diana seemed so down to earth, and very humble of her great talent, performing, singing and jazzing seems to be second nature for her. I really enjoyed the performance, I felt as if we, as an audience, got to know her. She was very personable. She shared stories that had ment so much to her, such as the relationship and friendship with Oscar Peterson. She told the audience how she first met him and the songs that means so much to her. Her life, as a young girl in Nanimo, BC. How she started singing and performing, and who her idols were. I was very surprised to see Diana as a regular person, no chip on her shoulder. She is also quite hilarious...she mentioned some very funny stories of her life on the Island, her husband and her twins. I was very impressed how patriotic she was, and her love of being a Canadian..... We were so proud of that. It's nice to see some one who made it as an International Superstar being so humble and down to earth. Can't wait for the next concert....I'll be there for sure.....

Probably the BEST concert we have ever attended. Our seats were great and her performance was excellent.

  • She brought us into her world!

The show was amazing, touching moments that alomost brought me to tears to moments of utter joy when the band was blasting. I would go again and again.

  • Diana Krall was fabulous!

by WinnieJoy on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Ms. Krall's concert was her best yet. She was funny, warm, engaging and of course the jazz was wonderful. Her group was so tight and amazing-we love to hear such great live music. We'd been to several previous concerts, but we enjoyed this one even more as she has matured and opened up on stage so much more. A lovely evening of outstanding jazz.

  • She Smokes!

by RickandMyles on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Over the years, Diana has grown so confident and smartass, in a lovely, funny way. She has gone from the shy girl from Nanaimo to woman confident on the world stage. But you know, she knows and we know, she still has mossy webs between her toes !!! :-) She is SO self-deprecating, you can't help but love her more. Wonderful..... We have all of her music, but love Quiet Nights most of all....even if it doesn't have a "Departure Bay" !

  • Simply blonde.

by Susan on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

I think if Diana Krall weren't blonde, no one would pay attention. Sure she's a local darling and favorite but she's unoriginal, a bit ditzy, not really a very good musician or singer. I've seen her several times and am always disappointed with the quality of her performance. We are so Canadian and so is she so we like her.

  • An amazing night with Diana Krall

by Cormell on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Initially we were unsure what to expect. We've always loved Diana Krall's music but I did wonder if a concert experience might be a bit low key. I can now happily say that I was very wrong. The evening was magical, sexy, intense and exquisite. Diana wowed us with upbeat high energy numbers and moved us with heartfelt emotional ones. She shared freely of herself both during her performance and while taking breaks between songs to talk to the audience. All in all it was a terrific experience and I would highly recommend an evening with Diana to anyone.

  • Nothing quiet about Krall's night at the Orpheum!

by JazzFan on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

This was Diana Krall's best concert yet. She was much more engaged with the audience and seemed a lot more comfortable just being who she is.
