    Journey into Dicky's Americana

by CdnBrother on 2009-12-10Tralf - Buffalo

Dickey Betts hasn't come to my hometown, Toronto , for a few years and I've missed his last few shows in the western N.Y area, so when I heard he was coming to Buffalo on 12/9 I knew I had to be there. A long drive through rain, snow and high winds but it was all worth while. The Tralf is a cozy friendly venue, intimate and sounded great, and the band....well just couldn't be better. Dicky's playing is as good as I've heard it, which is about 15 times over the past 20 years. Age hasn't tempered his firey spirit or his passionate playing or soulfull vocals. The band was as tight as a banjo string and played with enthusiastic furvor that transended in the audience. They touched on old ABB classics, Jessica, Liz Reed, Done Someone Wrong, newer ABB No one to Run with, Back where it all Begins, and a few I hadn't heard, a song for Gerry Garcia and a vocal number by Duanne Betts, capped off with a classic and rollicking Ramblin Man encore. Wow, chills and thrills supplied by Dicky and Company, it reminded me how much I appreciate him, his writing, his playing and his passion. Dickys music has Changed My Way of Living, (only regret is they didnt play it) and I cant wait for the next show anywhere within reach of my old car. The snow held off until the encore was over and a safe trip home. Keep on touring Dicky, cant wait til next time. Stew
