    Dirty Dancing... or was it?

by Chihuahuamom1964 on 2015-04-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Didn't quite live up to my expectations. Was expecting more from it.

I think the production nailed all aspects - the cast, the dancing, singing. Every part of the show was memorable and spectacular.

Good entertainment on a Friday evening

by RideauSky on 2015-04-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The play followed the movie script very well. We enjoyed the singers as they displayed excellent range. Technology used to continually change the backdrop helped explain where the actors were in the story and paralleled the movie scrip as closely as possible for a stage play. As with the reaction of the audience as the show came to a close it was good, not great.

    Extremely Well Done!

by BucketBeater on 2015-04-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I didn't know what to expect as we sat down and the lights dimmed. My brooding thoughts were quickly dispelled as the show began (and continued to hold us captive for the entire performance). Though the male lead performer ('Johnny') was painstakingly dry and utterly devoid of any emotion, the rest of the ensemble cast more than made up for his shortcomings with their vibrance, humour, and overall professional stage presence. The stage and lighting production were astounding as well.

    Dirty Dancing On Stage

by 4EVRJOY on 2015-04-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The performance was so different from the production I saw in Toronto years ago . The use of more modern technology to overlay film with reality gave the visuals more depth . The dancing was terrific. However, Johnny as an actor was on the weak side compared to Baby . Although I had a great box seat , he was inaudible a lot of the time . I think the sound projection in general needs checking ! It was a fun evening !

No one puts baby in the corner!

by Melsnow on 2015-04-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I loved the show. The songs were well done and the acting was good. I thought the actress playing baby was really good and reminded me of the movie. I found that Johnny did a good job overall but there is only one Patrick swayze. I really enjoyed the dancing, all the dancers were really good. Overall if you saw the movie I would recommend the show!

The performance itself was exceptional....Loved it! Would have enjoyed it more but the balcony seats I chose turned out to be terrible.

    Fantastic!

by Kassioppee on 2015-04-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

They got everything right! I was enchanted, and I had very high expectations! My only negative comment is not related to the show but to the theater: I was incomodated by all the perfume. It seems that everyone going to the theatre feels the need to overdue it on perfume, which is toxic. A no-scent Policy is in order.

The singing was outstanding ~ A very good show

by Winter1 on 2015-04-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Enjoyed the show very much. The script was very true to the original movie, but the lead male actor was a bit weak compared to the rest of the cast. The singing was awesome and provided a lift to the overall show.

Dirty Dancing disjointed, failed to engage emotion

by Mike42 on 2015-04-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Dirty Dancing, the stage musical, is based on the 1987 movie of the same name and was written by the writer of the movie. Set in 1963, it revolves around a young woman vacationing with her family at a resort in the Catskills, where she becomes involved with a staff dance instructor. The stage show contains additional songs, scenes, and sub-plots that were not in the movie. Although the set was innovative and interesting, its ability to change scenes rapidly and smoothly was over-used. Some scenes consisted of just one or two lines of dialogue and then the set changed to another location. In addition, the sound quality was a bit muddy, so it was sometimes difficult to hear the dialogue. The dancing was good, but the acting, for the most part, was flat (aside from the female lead, who was believable). The scenes passed by so quickly and there were so many sub-plots (some arising only late in the second act), it was hard to feel engaged with the characters. I found the most effective scenes were the dance training and the finale, which actually had some emotional weight.

Dirty Dancing - not what I expected

by Roxie71 on 2015-04-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

High expectations, ended up disappointed. Johnny little stiff, more fire, found it was missing, same with moves. Baby ok, would have liked more ooph. Emily Rice, fab as Lisa. Act 1, slow pace, like play was being done in slow motion. More fluidity, & singing. 2nd act better. 2 singers, man that sang In the Still of the Night, & the woman, he sang with at the end, they are a power house, as individuals & together. They were amazing, I wanted more. Wish that She's like the Wind was sung. Was a powerful point in the movie, it's a part you really felt, and I found it was missing.

Average - cheesy - not NAC quality

by meOttawa on 2015-04-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I found the acting by the lead Johnny and Baby's father to be poor and even awkward and laughable at times. The performances by Baby and her sister and Penny were excellent!

    It was just ok

by pyarem on 2015-04-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Just ok. Pretty expensive for the quality of performance. Disjointed story line.
