Dirty Honey and Mac Saturn at Louis’
by Rockin’ Reggie on 2022-09-03Louis' - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5I bought my ticket for Dirty Honey as soon as they were playing in Saskatoon at Louis’. There were parts that I like and parts not so much about this evening of music. I was surprised that there was a warmup act. They were Mac Saturn from Detroit. I hadn’t heard of them before. They had the rock star look down, but initially the singer’s attempt to get the crowd pumped up for the main act seemed a bit forced, awkward, and restrained. He seemed to loosen up himself and improve by the time they got to their last song, which had him writhing on the floor off stage singing amongst the audience. I was disappointed that they didn’t play more or get an encore. They played a 45 minute set. I didn’t hear anything that would make me run out and buy their recordings/or download. They have recordings on Spotify. They started exactly on time. I appreciate their efforts of flying the rock flag and with time and experience they may have something more appealing to offer. I’ll have to listen online. I thought as I listened that I could name several local bands that could blow them off the stage.
Dirty Honey’s experience and showmanship was readily evident. There was a Dirty Honey Canadian tour guitar raffle before the show. I didn’t win. Ah, shucks! I would have had the raffle after the show and met up with people who bought merchandise. Both bands had the usual merchandise(t-shirts, collector buttons, stickers, CDs, signed vinyl, hoodie, etc.). I bought the Dirty Honey cd for $25. They played most of their songs on their cd plus an Aerosmith tune (Last Child) and a Prince song (Let’s Go Crazy). I thought the sound level was too loud for a small venue like Louis’ and washed out because of the flat surfaces and resultant reflection. I think the band has potential to be a more popular if they have good management and luck. I think the talent is there. The crowd enjoyed them, but COVID has affected the young audiences and they lack the experience of live performances. It took significant beer and other beverages to get them into their rocker mode. The beer “mugs” looked very small. I didn’t drink anything, so I don’t know if the price was reflected by the size. Sadly, there wasn’t more than 100 people there all night. Too bad for those who didn’t show or know about it.
All said, I’m glad I went! It was midweek so I was home by 11:00. I had to work the next day. All the best to both bands.
