About

2013 saw a double release for Dream Theater: a self-titled studio album and Live at Luna Park, an album that features material taken from the band's A Dramatic Turn of Events tour in 2012. This latter release is a treat, featuring two DVDs and three CDs of material that highlights the prog metal theatrics delighting ticket buyers for over 25 years. These theatrics revolve around the band's consummate artistry. Dream Theater's prog roots compel them to focus on musical craftsmanship as the driving force of their performance. However, serious musicianship is not without its spark of playfulness. A love of quirky humor often pops up when the band performs in concert. It's not uncommon for ticket buyers to be pleasantly surprised by alternating set lists, musical quotes and spontaneous bursts of improvisation. Members of the band have even swapped instruments mid-set just to keep things fresh.

Dream Theater's newest, self-titled album contains all the elements that make the band stand out among their peers. The opening, "False Awakening Suite," sets a cinematic tone for the rest of the tracks. The hard-driving "The Enemy Inside" invokes shades of classic Iron Maiden, yet with Dream Theater's own unique twist. The band has been going hard and strong since 1985, when three music school graduates started the band as a tribute to their heroes. Armed with a stack of potent demos, they hit the NYC circuit, shopping tapes and strengthening their live act. Each new album chronicles their steady artistic progression, as constant touring helps to keep things fresh and their musicianship alive. Dream Theater's music is a lively blend of heavy metal and prog rock, with jazz and classical elements thrown in for a healthy amount of spice.

    Dream Theater & Devin Townsend.

    by Jay B on 2023-07-21

Townsend was an epic opener - amazing singer and had a great band - drummer was unreal. Dream Theater was perfect as expected. Did not miss a beat or one note of probably over 250,000 :) haha Amazing to see live.

Historic night in a so-so venue

    by Jonny on 2023-07-21

Amazing show with some of the greatest legends of prog rock and metal! Sound was good mostly, although the mix was poor for animals as leaders. The biggest problem was that the bands were so low that it was impossible to see them. Needed to raise the stage a lot. My girlfriend and I were only 20' back from the stage and she couldn't see a thing. Definitely disappointed on that front. Otherwise, one of the great shows of 2023 for me for sure.

Not For Me, But They're Definitely Talented

    by Luke on 2023-07-19

I saw them headlining a show that Devin Townsend was opening for. I've never been too familiar with Dream Theatre, as progressive metal is not my favourite style. They're definitely very skilled musicians and the background visuals accompanying each song were captivating. I'm not necessarily a Dream Theatre fan now, but they put on a solid show.

    Meh

    by Steph on 2023-07-16

Animals as leaders and devin townsend were solid. Dream theatre had terrible sound. What a shame it is to only hear Mike Mangini’s snare. Sometimes we heard his kicks but they sounded terrible. The keyboard was on and off. Either you didn’t hear him or he would be way too loud. The vocals were mediocre all along. My friends and I left after 4 songs. We couldn’t deal with this. Too bad, I was super excited to see the band…

    A Great Experience

    by Ajohns1 on 2023-07-08

I quite enjoyed this experience. Dream Theater, Devin Townsend and Animals As Leaders all sounded great. Concessions were actually reasonably priced compared to big Toronto venues and the staff were friendly and helpful.

    by Kanjonez777 on 2023-07-08

One of the best experiences in regards to live music. Dream Theater is awe inspiring. Devin townsend was incredible. Animals as Leaders were transcendent. Heavy words. I mean every one of them.

Why are the basses so loud

    by DevinFan on 2023-07-08

Going to a prog metal concert, where all intricacies are gone because the whole sound is booming and overly loud. Bass is so high up that everything else gets washed away. Looking at a drummer hammering his cymbals without hearing any of it is really frustrating. The bands do their best but as long as the sound engineering keeps being that bad, I can't go support my favourite artists anymore

I don't know if possible, but...

    by Crix22 on 2023-07-07

About the sound. I was quite close to the stage (on their left) and I have two observations: the voice is quite shy ... And...probably intended, but the right side cymbals were only audible through the central microphones (so not very clear). Does this mean that if I want a better sound, I should go further from the stage ? The bands were great!
