About

2013 saw a double release for Dream Theater: a self-titled studio album and Live at Luna Park, an album that features material taken from the band's A Dramatic Turn of Events tour in 2012. This latter release is a treat, featuring two DVDs and three CDs of material that highlights the prog metal theatrics delighting ticket buyers for over 25 years. These theatrics revolve around the band's consummate artistry. Dream Theater's prog roots compel them to focus on musical craftsmanship as the driving force of their performance. However, serious musicianship is not without its spark of playfulness. A love of quirky humor often pops up when the band performs in concert. It's not uncommon for ticket buyers to be pleasantly surprised by alternating set lists, musical quotes and spontaneous bursts of improvisation. Members of the band have even swapped instruments mid-set just to keep things fresh.

Dream Theater's newest, self-titled album contains all the elements that make the band stand out among their peers. The opening, "False Awakening Suite," sets a cinematic tone for the rest of the tracks. The hard-driving "The Enemy Inside" invokes shades of classic Iron Maiden, yet with Dream Theater's own unique twist. The band has been going hard and strong since 1985, when three music school graduates started the band as a tribute to their heroes. Armed with a stack of potent demos, they hit the NYC circuit, shopping tapes and strengthening their live act. Each new album chronicles their steady artistic progression, as constant touring helps to keep things fresh and their musicianship alive. Dream Theater's music is a lively blend of heavy metal and prog rock, with jazz and classical elements thrown in for a healthy amount of spice.

This was my second time seeing Dream Theatre and it was even better than the first. Of course, I was fortunate to see Mike Portnoy perform with the band. The sound was crystal clear and the new music (Parasomnia) was amazing! Vocals were a little off at times but overall really good. I highly recommend seeing Dream Theatre live in concert.

Overall, the concert was a memorable celebration of Dream Theater's four decades in progressive metal, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. The performance was highlighted by the return of original drummer Mike Portnoy, adding a nostalgic touch to the evening.

  • A once in a lifetime experience full of emotion and awe

Been a fan of the band for 23 years. I was fortunate enough to catch them in Edmonton 2 years ago for my first time ever. That show was great. However, the moment they announced their 40th anniversary Solo Tour, together with Mike’s return, my wife and I knew we had to go all out. We met the band and got front stage tickets. Let me tell you, words cannot describe the culmination of a long lasting Dream. The event was 3 hours too short, we didn’t want the night to end. It truly felt like their set list, their performance, was specifically catered to us. A bitter sweet feeling of having this checked off our Bucket List. They are true masters of their crafts, each an every single one of them, effortlessly going through the motions delivering a majestic experience. And their sound, regardless of the venue, is always perfect. Their production/stage group is god tier as well. Thank you John, James, Jordan, Mike and John.

I have never been happier to witness something. Experience of a lifetime, there's no one who does it like DT!

  • Dream come true

by rquan on 2024-10-18Rating: 5 out of 5

This has been my favorite band since I started playing guitar since I started playing guitar at 14. Finally got to see them live and they did not disappoint one bit. I was pleasantly surprised when they played the entirety of Count of Tuscany instead of cutting it short like most artists would've since its so long, it sounded beautiful live and was one of the best moments of my life. I will cherish this night forever.

  • Awesome

My first Dream Theater show was on March 1 2022 and 2nd is July 4 2023 on Place Bell Laval. All of these guys are in their late 50's and 60's and they kicked ass! John Peteucci's shredding just melts my face. I love the fact that Rudess' keyboard can rotate and bend everywhere when he shreds. Mangini's drumming is top notch. Myung's bass playing is tight. I do have some critiques to add. The bass guitar should be louder and feel free to downtune songs so that James can sing easily. Overall, awesome live performance. Looking forward to see Mike Portnoy on my third Dream Theater concert.

This was the start of a fantastic weekend, three great bands - Animals as Leaders, Devin Townsend and Dream Theater. I'll admit we came to support Devin Townsend as we've seen him twice at Ramblin' Man Fair but we loved the vibe of AaL and DT. Thanks to Dream Theater for pulling this together. Considering we went to the event by public transport it was incredibly easy to get to and from Doug Mitchell Thunderbird

  • Epic and Awesome

by Pagefan on 2023-07-26Rating: 5 out of 5

Three brilliant bands so who could ask for more. I have seen Animals as Leaders several times and they were simply brilliant again. I really like what they play and the guitar interplay was superb. Devin Townsend rarely plays his hometown, so it was great to see him perform. I think the last time was when his band was called Strapping Young Lad. His band was excellent especially Mike Keneally on keyboards and guitar. It had been 13 years since Dream Theater played Vancouver, which to the city's concert promoter is an absolute disgrace and they need to do better getting bands like Dream Theater booked more often. I saw the start of this tour (the new album) last year in Kent WA, so the set list has been revamped and shortened. The Count of Tuscany was definitely the highlight again. Petrucci's guitar playing defies belief at how good he is. I thought Mike Mangini had a great night behind the drums, and James Labrie's voice (tempered with time and age) held up well throughout the night. Visually the show was excellent and the sound was much better than I expected in that type of venue. A show not to be missed, and my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Existing from the parking garage was well organized as well. Awesome. Let's not wait 13 years before they come to town again.

  • All what I anticipated and more

by ilya on 2023-07-25Rating: 5 out of 5

It felt like there were 3 headliners this evening. 3 equally amazing bands. The closing song with all of them on one stage is just priceless!!

  • Great show, but let us stand!

by octobuss on 2023-07-25Rating: 5 out of 5

Show was amazing! Dream(sonic) come true. Security, please confirm with the bands if it is okay or not to STAND for the show. There was some confusion at the beginning, and both the bands and fans felt clearly awkward about everyone seated. I stood a couple times in the beginning, and security flashed me down, and then the opening bands kept awkwardly asking / gesturing people to stand.

  • Would see this again in a heartbeat

by Peter on 2023-07-24Rating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing show. My main draw was Dream Theater, and I wasn't really not too familiar with Animals as Leaders and Devin Townsend aside from a few tunes. Wow, they are both incredible bands! Great ticket value on this one. My first time at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre too. Great arena, and a good size for this show. Great view from our seats. I was a little put out by the long commute, when the show was announced. But in the end the whole evening was fantastic. Good crowd too.

  • The quality of sound was very disappointing!

by Majd on 2023-07-24Rating: 1 out of 5

The lead singer James LaBrie appeared to be drunk and kept on catching his breath and singing in a not so familiar voice, unfortunately I had to leave the stage during my fav song.

  • Dream Theater's musicianship was 5/5. But...

by The highlight reel Khalil on 2023-07-24Rating: 4 out of 5

Animals and Leaders made many new fans. Devin blew the f'n roof off. Flawless hour by him. One of the best live performances I have witnessed. Can't believe a voice can do that. And hey - the band he had with them were great as well. They all looked like they were having a blast and it translated into the music. On to Dream Theater. As always, these guys deliver...on the instrumentation level. But, and it pains me to write this...James voice was not up to par here. Maybe it was an off night. Maybe it was a case of "getting older."But it brought the overall score of the band down. And that hurts. Myung was a demon, ruddess is the best in the world. And MM on the drums is making people forget about Portnoy (if that is even possible for this fanbase.) That brings us to John Petrucci. The man was soaring! His tone was to die for, whether it be chunky riffs or magnetic leads. Many people were here to see him alone. Reminded me of how people would see Van Halen just to see what Eddie was going to do. He is a guitar God superstar and we are spoiled to be able to hear him play live. Overall Dream Theater was a 3.5/5. And that score is soley based to the vocals. I've seen this band many times and I've never heard Labrie like that. He had great moments too, but when his voice faltered, it was too noticeable. Hopefully he and the boys sort it out. Because those brief moments when you heard Devy singing DT lyrics...oh man. If only. It's the elephant in the room now. Had to be said. In any case...always a gift to see Dream Theater. Till next time

  • Poor sound and too loud

by Juergen on 2023-07-24Rating: 2 out of 5

Was really looking forward to this (Specifically Dream Theater). Unfortunately left very disappointed: 1. Poor sound: I am ok with loud sound, as long it is well mixed. Unfortunately the sound mix got worse the longer the concert went on. Bass drum and bass got more and more overpowering, resulting in a consistent hum, and as those got louder, guitar got louder, snare got louder, until everything was way too loud. As a keyboarder, I was looking forward to hearing Jordan Rudess, but his keyboards completely got buried apart from a few solos or where no drum or bass was played. 2. Poor vocals: Looked like James' voice was gone from the beginning. I admire that he pushed through it, but re-scheduling the concert to provide a memorable experience would have been better.

  • Labrie Should Have Retired 10 Years Ago

Title says it all: Labrie should have retired 10 years ago.
