Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as center and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final eight times.

  • I was hungry

by Raj on 2025-11-28Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

Honestly would buy food but the price of everything was not justifiable, I go to Jays games during weekdays and regular season and thry have $1 or $ 2 dollar hotdogs and drink deals. now I would be happy if you guys do something like that. Not everyone wants to blow $20 on a kfc sandwich it ads up.

  • Great time

by Ontario Grammie on 2025-10-31Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Loved the venue and the game. Found the food and beverage prices outrageous though. Was at a Calgary Flames game a few days before and they had a special on beer and food for an hour after the doors opened.

  • Venue great/Food ripoff

by Shelley on 2025-10-14Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

Love going to the games, new entry is really good. The cost of food and drink is ridiculous. One water is $8.50….come on. I have been to concerts in Toronto Roger’s and Vancouver and the drinks, food and water is far less. Edmonton’s cost is outrageous.

  • Freezing fun

by Swede on 2025-10-11Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Everything about the experience at Roger’s Place was superb except it was exceptionally cold with the AC blasting our section. We could only hold out for 2 periods and ended up leaving just before the third period started. Shame really as it was a lovely game to Watch and we spent a LOT of money for being there.

  • Best experience ever!

by Oilers fan since ‘75 on 2025-06-10Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been to several Oilers regular season games, between both Northlands Coliseum and Rogers Place, but between the 80s to present, I had never been to a Stanley Cup playoff game, let alone a Stanley Cup final. When I saw what was available for Game 1, I decided to go for it, treat both a friend & I to mark our respective belated birthday milestones with a once in a lifetime experience. It was a great enjoyable experience for my friend & I; it didn’t disappoint. The Oilers won SCF Game 1 in overtime! Here’s hoping that we’ll get to do it again sometime in the near future, provided the Oilers make it to the finals again :o)
