Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as centre and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final seven times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

    Oiler Game - Sportsnet Lounge

by Gust on 2024-01-09Rogers Place - Edmonton

If you are ok being seated a little higher up the Sportsnet lounge is worth every cent. All food inside is included (our game was chicken tacos, fish and chips, prime rib and all the fixings. Then there is Hotdogs, popcorn and other finger food well. Oh save room as after the 2nd period dessert comes out). Besides the food there are 2 bars (non alcoholic beverages are free) with a nice variety and lines are super short. Oh don't forget if you want to stay in your seat a server will bring you drinks. Then the room has its own bathroom so no long lines. My 14 year old son and I had a great experience in the lounge and would recommend it to anyone. Oh the game ends you are not rushed out and can stay for a drink if you so desire. Hopefully we can get lounge seats again.

    Bliss

by Harbs (Dr. Phil Harbridge) on 2023-12-01Rogers Place - Edmonton

My daughter and I (both Oilers fanatics!) wanted to leave Vancouver (canucks bleh!) and attend a game with the greatest fans in the NHL, cheering together for the greatest team in the NHL. It was a birthday gift to my daughter. We stayed at the JW Marriott ICE District (which was FANTASTIC!) and got tickets through TicketMaster for the Oilers v Vegas game. It was totally amazing! So convenient purchasing online with TicketMaster, seamless system with the perfect amount of communication. Didn't know the game was also the 'Hockey Fights Cancer' night (which I am fighting too). It was a great time, and we got the win!!

    Boring

by Runningonfumes on 2023-11-23Rogers Place - Edmonton

Spent a good amount of money to watch a what would normally be called a hockey game. Went with my siblings, one left early cus they would rather get work done than finish the game. Sloppy play, no heart. Couldn’t even get a good buzz on because drinks are outrageously priced. Next time I’m in Edmonton I’ll spend my money on something more worth while. Didn’t see McJesus play either.

    Oilers vs NYR

by Curt on 2023-10-29Rogers Place - Edmonton

Bad game...seats were good, able to see the entire ice and how terrible the Oilers were playing. Didn't purchase anything at the game as the prices are ridiculous. It's too bad when you spend that kind of money to go and you see a dud of a game. It's definitely not worth going to watch the Oilers if they're not a winning team. Too expensive to waste money on pro athlete's making U15 mistakes.

    SNA-AA STR

    by Gbj1808 on 2023-10-29Rogers Place - Edmonton

Food was great, but when I saw there were no stools to sit at by our ledge I was quite disappointed. Not clear why you would not put stools there. It will not take up anymore room. Seems dumb to offer standing room only when there is clearly spots designated on ledge as the spot to stand with my ticket number.

    Mind blowing

by Tahltan on 2023-04-28Rogers Place - Edmonton

Just walking up to the venue feeling the energy. Best experience ever at a hockey game in any arena that I have been in. The crowd was electric and the building was buzzing. Such great design and layout. An experience I’ll never forget and already want another taste of it.

    Disappointed

by Don on 2023-04-20Rogers Place - Edmonton

Was very disappointed that fans were throwing beer cans and cups. I was hit on back of my head and beer splashed all over me at end of game when we lost in overtime. There needs to be better measures put in place or I feel more comfortable watching from home. Super sad as I have been a fan since early 80’s
