Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as centre and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final seven times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

The Oiler win was not the only highlight

by TiffyKassian on 2021-11-21Rogers Place - Edmonton

Loved the introduction where they acknowledged the territory with Grand Chief Willie Littlechilds. the seats were great and comfortable, the food had great options, but no Nachos that I could find and I don’t know if they actually had Smirnoff ice, but at the end, easy to get in, great seats, had a wonderful time post-covid lockdown and can’t wait to come back!

    Horrible

by Angry Customer on 2021-10-30Rogers Place - Edmonton

Worst experience ever!!! Went with some co-workers for a night out but it was cut short in a hurry! A co-worker of mine was accused of being ridiculously intoxicated when in fact he was not. We asked the security what the issue was and security said he was being belligerent, but he was sitting by me the whole time and was not at all. When we questioned security of where it happened it was not even in the same section we were sitting. After the security guard was questioned of the area and proven wrong my co-worker was STILL kicked out of the arena after getting to watch only 1 period of the game. The security had zero grounds to stand on and when proven wrong, instead of apologizing he just put his foot down to prove he was in charge. Completely disappointed and a complete waste of $184.50.

    Flagrant Breach of Covid Protocol

by Concerned on 2021-10-30Rogers Place - Edmonton

The man in Section 118 Row 1 Seat 1 never wore a mask at any time during the entire game, and was not eating or drinking. In the 3rd period a Rogers attendant stood at the bottom of the stairs right beside him and did nothing at all. I will not return.

    Oilers vs. Flyers - October 27, 2021

by Officer Pete Malloy, LAPD, Badge 744 on 2021-10-30Rogers Place - Edmonton

I have been to Oilers games in the past, but this was my first time to Rogers Place. The venue is absolutely amazing, and the game was highly entertaining (even if the Flyers won). The energy was fantastic, the crowds followed COVID safety protocols, and everyone got into the building before the game at a reasonably fast, but thorough, check-in and screening process. I am hoping to get tickets to future Oilers games, specifically when (sorry, not if, for non-Oilers fans!!) the Oilers go to the playoffs in April 2022. In all seriousness, I had a blast, and enjoyed the game, and made friends with some Flyers fans, too!!

    Emontrash

by CR on 2021-10-19Rogers Place - Edmonton

Zero security presence. Fans moved all around to different seats as they felt like it. Everything is insanely over priced. I paid over $300 for club seats and had multiple different people move in front of me, loud standing and chatting with there friends. I expected a lot more when paying that much money for club seats. Didn’t see an usher not even one time ask anyone to move back to there seats. For being in the club seat area expected to get drinks a little bit quicker, had to wait over 30 mins for a drink and missed a large portion of the 2nd period. Edmonton fans are rude and generally a very trashy bunch.

    Clean, comfortable, expensive

by Alexis on 2021-10-10Rogers Place - Edmonton

The arena is no doubt state-of-the-art, but the concessions are so immensely expensive. Washrooms are clean and in plenty so lines are short. Seats are comfortable.

    Good game.

by Tracy G on 2021-10-10Rogers Place - Edmonton

Great game. COVID protocols all went very quickly, there was no big lineup to queue in. No issues with tickets on the phone at the door either. Price was decent for the seats we had.

    Oilers vs Jets

by Ned on 2020-03-15Rogers Place - Edmonton

Good experience but always find Oilers and Oil Kings a little too loud. The hockey is awesome but it helps if you know the other team (Jets) and come for the hockey not for the win. Either team could have won and I would be happy.
