About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

    Both Bands were great

by Binkie on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Parking was easy, seats were great (3rd row LC). Really came to hear Nick Lowe & band......they were very good! Elvis Costello (for my ears) was not a great singer but his band were incredibly good as was he in terms of musical prowess. Good show.

    Not what we expected.

by Big Fan on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Opening act Nick Lowe exceeded expectations. Lots of fun to listen to him. Elvis still had his voice and sounded good. They didnt play a lot of his great songs for example…Alison, I write the book. Some of his others were rearranged so they were barely recognizable. While I can appreciate it could get boring for him to play his material in the same manner as we all fell in love with his songs but we were hoping to revisit those feelings of 30 years ago.

    Disappointed

by Big Red on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The sound was horrible- like listening to a drive-in movie speaker. No keyboards for the first half of concert. Arrangements and set list? I didn’t get what I came for. - what can you say - he is an artist.

    Nick Stole the Show

by Bobbybigmac on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Nick Lowe was better than Elvis. Nick's sound wsd great, Elvis's sound wss too loud and terrible at times. Elvis self indulgence with his singing, playing and song arrangements ruined his performance for me. Charlie Sexton got only two tony solos. Waste if his talents and he looked bored. Nick stole the show

Elvis show not what expected / hoped for

by Ron s on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Wanted to see Elvis for 30 years. Huge hoping for classics mixed w new. However, complete new “ deconstructed” versions of his and many others songs( ABBA, Springsteen). Many visits to genres- lounge, 60’s, country, jazz. No versions of his classics. Elvis said they were “ taking a summer holiday, not playing a Golden Oldies tour” . Musician ship by all onstage amazing. Overall disappointing to NO see classics at all - Allison, Pump ItUp, Everyday I write the Book, etc as I had hoped for.

    Disappointing

by Dean on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

We were there to hear our favorites and see the man! Sadly, though the band was great, Elvis decided to show us his talent for "deconstructing" songs which made them long and boring. That, combined with variable sound quality and crazy lighting, made for a disappointing show. I was looking at my watch. He lost his voice about 3/4 of the way through, to boot. Nick Lowe added some vocal quality at the end, I will admit. Then there was the chair issue.....

    WTH was that!?!?!

by Dave58 on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Elvis sounded good. How he played the songs was another matter. Did not want to listen to his reimagined versions of his classic songs. What was the point of having Charlie Sexton as part of the band? Wasted opportunity to have Charlie play the guitar the way he can. Nick Lowe & LS were way better.

by Camille on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Elvis Costello puts on a great show, he's funny and personable but his set list is really lacking and we were disappointed leaving without hearing his most loved songs My Aim Is True and Pump it Up. Very sad since my sister was named Allison 😔

Bad audience, venue is not friendly for folks with mobility

by AFG70 on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The musicians were top notch. The venue was horrible..the seats weren't accommodating for those who not of average build or had mobility issues. Will not be attending concerts at Queen Elizabeth.. The Audience didn't appreciate the jazz retool that Elvis was doing and about 25 of the crowd left.. it was bad..

    New from old

by Fanboy3 on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The new show is Elvis playing his old hits in new ways. His new interpretations are moody extended retakes of the originals. Let’s hope he releases an album of the new versions!

    Very disappointed

by Pepper on 2023-06-10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

As an Elvis Costello fan I was very disappointed with the show. I enjoyed Nick Lowe and Los Straightjackets. They were very good. Unfortunately it quickly went downhill from there. Elvis’s vocals were off all night. The sound mix was terrible. It was like the band had not rehearsed at all. I waited a long time to see Elvis live. I wish the performance was better

In very poor voice and under-rehearsed. Like watching a shaky dress rehearsal. Nick Lowe was great as were Los Straightjackets.

    by PJ on 2023-06-08

Huge Costello fan , but this felt like a Dylan ;concert : long and self indulgent. The man is funny and has an extensive catalog, there is no reason why he should be playing so many obscure songs. The final with Nick Lowe saved the evening.

    Loved Massey Hall

by MARIAN on 2022-08-14Massey Hall - Toronto

Loved the opening act Nick Lowe. The Elvis Costello show was good but it lacked a lot of the classic hits which is really what I wanted to hear. Sometimes I found it hard to hear when he spoke. Sound was a bit muffled. I was in the "300"seating, not sure if that made it difficult hearing him speak?? I think artists should play a set dedicated to old tunes that made them famous.
