About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Elvis Costello at Massey Hall

by Elvis Rocks on 2025-09-29Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Great performance by Elvis and his band! Love the “ back in the day simplicity” ! No glitzy lights or theatrics required just Elvis, bass guitar, keyboard ,electric guitar and drums Love how he interacted with the audience and talked about his family Massey hall is the best venue EVER !

  • Excellent show. Sound meh

by Nefarious on 2025-09-29Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis was amazing. Great selection of songs. Well paced. Great storytelling, lots of dry English wit. Small combo acoustic set was wonderful. As heard from the centre of the back row, sound was muddy and vocals lost for electric tunes.

  • Phenomenal night

by YYZPats on 2025-09-29Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great night ... new interpretations of classic hits, a big finish my 3 favorites and great company as we brought our kids to the show. Bummer was Charlie and Elvis spent 45 minutes with their backs to us in the middle of the show for the 'red stool' portion. Saw him on the Spike tour at Massey Hall and was great to close the loop on Friday night!!

  • Elvis was Awesome!

by FDC on 2025-09-29Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent concert by Elvis Costello & the Imposters featuring Charlie Sexton! Started right on time, respected his audience and loved that there was no opening band. Band was tight, Elvis’ voice still going strong and one of the best concerts I have attended. Thank you Elvis!!!

  • In awe!

by Alison on 2025-09-29Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Have loved Elvis Costello since my teens. This was my first concert. Absolutely loved the concert from start to finish after 2 hours. Some old favourites in the beginning, some other stuff I’d never heard before in the middle and a big bang in the end (including my favourite Alison) in the end! Love, love love!

  • Costello and his band were fantastic…

by SL on 2025-09-29Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

… but the sound quality was poor. The vocals were too low! The piano, especially, was too high. For Massey Hall, this is disappointing! Also… the number of people stepping on their beer cans between each song to get up and get another beer to take back to their seats mid song was unbelievably annoying! It’s a very bad decision for MH to let people take drinks to their seats. Like many of the rest of us, we had our drinks before the show started. I think the folks at MH should revisit this policy. We pay too much for a concert ticket to be bothered with this constant disruption. Costello and his band were fantastic. The venue had issues.

  • Aging hero gives it a go

by midlife on 2025-09-29Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis is a mumbler at the best of times, but bass and drums really drowned out the lyrics in some parts of the Hall. Also, my view was semi-obstructed by a pillar but this was not sold as an obstructed seat. Otherwise good show and I enjoyed it best when he played his classic 70s material.
