  • Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell

by dhanigirl on 2013-03-25Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

it was a set list made in heaven, I don't think I blinked once. Two of my favourite singers, songwriters and musicians on stage together singing some of my favourite songs. And the grandaddy of sad songs Love Hurts just made my heart swell. Rodney never took his eyes off Emmylou they were like one. thank you and please come this way again.... totally devoted.....

  • Thompson Electrifies, Emmylou Charms

by Jkay on 2013-03-25Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Thompson opened with blazing guitar work on his strat playing new songs from his current album electric. A solo acoustic version of 52 Vincent Black Lightning was a highlight along with a rollicking Tear Stained Letter to close the set. Emmylou and Rodney performed songs off their current album Old Yellow Moon and some of her classics numbers including Wheels and Love Hurts. The harmonies between the two were reminiscent of her work with GP. The backing band was excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable concert.

  • Disappointing

by CollingwoodFans on 2013-03-24Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

We came with great expectation, the sound was poor at best (understand that sound man was delayed at boarder) when you come to hear that angelic voice you loss interest in a hurry when it doesn't shine through. This looks like it may have been the 1st show of the tour. The show didn't flow we had no chance to make any kind of connection with Emmylou or Rodney .They almost seemed lost together This should be a great "Show" hopefully they can pull it all together

  • A Don't Miss Experience

by Saturnwreck on 2013-03-24Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Having the opportunity to see Richard Thompson or Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell perform is great. Seeing them both on the same ticket is very special. And, going to this performance at Massey Hall, which is a nearly-perfect venue acoustically, added to the experience. Richard Thompson with his Electric Trio was amazing. His side musicians were terrific and I especially like the drummer's work. One hour was not enough. His new material is very strong and songs like Good Things Happen to Bad People stood up very well alongside the classics, such as Tear Stained Letter and 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. Duet singing doesn't get any better than Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. I particularly love Rodney Crowell, and would have liked to hear him taking the lead on a few more songs, but that is a minor quibble. Their band provided strong support, with a talented young guitar player from Australia and the pedal steel player from her old Hot Band. Richard Thompson joined them for one song and jammed with her guitar player. Definitely a don’t miss experience. I also recommend purchasing their new CDs: Electric [RT] and Old Yellow Moon [Emmylour & Rodney].

  • I loved Emmylou and Rodney

by auntybarby on 2013-03-24Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

I had never heard of Richard Thompson before. I found his opening act to be excruciatingly long, loud and boring. I am sure he must be good as he seemed to have a lot of fans in the crowd but in my opinion the act was rock n roll or jazzy rock n roll and I didn't feel it reflected the tone of a starring duo like Emmylou and Rodney. If I had known he was going to play for an hour before them I would not have arrived until 9 pm. I found the performance of Emmylou and Rodney to be sort of like having them come in to your living room and playing a lot of new stuff. I was disappointed as I consider Emmylou to be one of my favourite singers of all time. I really was hoping to hear all her old beloved standbys. Instead, I felt it was an advertisement for their new album, which I am still trying to decide if I like the music well enough to buy. That being said, I loved the old songs that they did sing. I would give some consideration to paying to see a concert like that again.

Great chemistry . Emmylou has found her new hot band. Now ... What to call them?

Good show. Richard Thompson an amazing guitar player. Would have liked to hear Rodney Crowell do a solo or two from his old songs.

  • Emmylou in Banff

by BGGG on 2012-08-11The Banff Centre - Shaw Amphitheatre - BanffRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was excellent...once I found it, which wasn't easy, and the weather was perfect. I've wanted to see Emmylou Harris forever and I wasn't disappointed. The sound was excellent, the band was great and her voice is as strong as ever. She had a very long list of songs she could choose from and the set she came up with provided a great mix of old to new and back again. Would go to see her again in a heart beat. The opening band was very good too.

  • An awesome evening.

EmmyLou was great. This was the 6th time I'd seen her and my favorite yet. No nonsense nonstop music from a truly gifted artist. Loved the Barr Brothers as well.

  • Emmylou - great as always

by WillyMilly on 2010-11-14University At Buffalo Center for the Arts - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

Emmylou Harris is always great ....... love anything she sings. However, felt that there were too many 'sad' songs and not enough of the upbeat, more well-known songs. That being said, I would never pass up an opportunity to see 'my girl'!

  • Emmylou as great as ever - Loved Buddy Miller

by Rusty51 on 2009-11-17Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

We expected a great concert from Emmylou and her Red Dirt Boys and that is what we got. A great concert in a venue with amazing sound. We were in the side mezzanine seats and while close and great seats, I got a bit of a crick in my neck by being turned a bit sideways. But the real surprise and therefore the memorable part for us was witnessing the amazing talents of Buddy Miller. Knew he was good, but this concert seemed to bring him alive and we were truly impressed. Loved when Emmylou came out to sing with him during his set. Wow! Those who didn't get to attend have missed a great show.

  • EmmyLou gets an F

by SammyP on 2009-11-17Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

F for failure. We left before the end of the show. It's sad to see capable musicians destroy their performance by ignoring the hall they play in. We like EMH because of the quality of her voice and the words of her songs. Neither was available to us because of the noise she and her boys put out over the speakers. Jack Singer is a great performance space with excellent acoustics. It's designed to pick up the subtleties of good music and fine voices -- both of which are part of what Emmy Lou can do. But those guys were amped up like a rock band playing outdoors beside a freeway, and all we got was noise.

Emmylou Harris was beyond excellent. Her voice echoed through the great acoustics that exist at the Jack Singer. The only way to hear Emmylou is in the best acoustics possible and that was created on Wed. night. Emmylou sang 22 songs and did 2 in her encore and just blew everyone away at every moment. You could hear a pin drop - people were just so in awe. She was genuinely happy to be there and was enjoying her great 5 piece band and loves Canada. Emmylou is at the top of her game and there is no one who can compare. Thank you for bringing Emmylou to Calgary (and Edmonton...I went there too and it was just as excellent yet an entirely different song set as she has such a selection to choose from and does every song with such depth and emotion it leaves you gasping for air).

  • Wonderful

Emmylou played for over an hour and a half and then came back for an encore. She was brilliant.

  • EmmyLou & band over-orchestrated,forgettable show

by oldcountrygal on 2009-11-13Jack Singer Concert Hall (ECPA) - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

The opening act by Buddy MIller (who I didn't know before this show) was the best part of the whole night. His voice & lyrics were beautifully showcased . When EmmyLou joined him for a bit, they sounded great together. I was keen to see her take the lead. But, sigh ... through most of the main act, which was EmmyLou + her band of 5 guys, the music was way over-orchestrated (Phil Spectre would have loved it) and often seemed unfocussed - drowning out EmmyLou's beautiful voice and making lyrics really hard to hear. Seemed that the musicians were competing with one another, vs collaborating. The best pieces were the semi-acapella ones and the duo/trios. But there were only a few of those. Also disappointing were the visuals: Although EmmyLou obviously has made major efforts to look good for her audience, and the bass player looked buff, too... the rest of the band looked like dumpy old escapees from a seniors home. Come on, guys: we can be in our 50s-60s and still make ourselves attractive to behold. As admirable as your musicianship may be, I didn't get any joy from watching you - and I'm your age. I'm paying big bucks to see you - vs. buy a CD - so give me something good to look at, ok?

  • Emmylou was awesome

Buddy M was awesome but the Audio when EH was performing was a bit wacked out.
