About

Over the course of his more than 50-year career, guitar legend Eric Clapton has covered an immense amount of ground. Along with dozens of album releases and concerts worldwide, he’s received three Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions — one for his solo career and two more as a member of both Cream and the Yardbirds. He’s also earned an unofficial spot high on the list of best rock guitarists of all time.

Though his eponymous solo debut surfaced in 1970, Clapton’s solo career took off in the mid-‘70s with “461 Ocean Boulevard” and its now-ubiquitous single, “I Shot the Sheriff.” The English performer has since released 19 more solo sets, most recently “Old Sock.” That 13-track collection features mostly covers, as well as guest appearances by several established musicians, including J.J. Cale, Paul McCartney, Chaka Khan and Steve Winwood.

Clapton’s numerous tours - both alone and with his many projects — have canvased the globe, with tickets selling out regularly at iconic venues like London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Clapton and Winwood - Vintage Performance

by bluegyraffe on 2009-07-17MGM Grand Hotel - Las Vegas

From the incredible soaring guitar work of Eric Clapton in Voodoo Chile to Steve Winwood’s outstanding solo piano rendition of Low Spark, Saturday night’s concert at the MGM Grand was nothing short of spectacular. The 12,000 fans were lifted from their seats a number of times during the show by these two musical masters and their updated versions of such rock standards as Cocaine and After Midnight drove the crowd into a roaring, stomping frenzy. Blues, rock, jazz – here are two British legends who can still sing and play with a youthful exuberance that belies their 40+ years in the business. How about the other players? Chris Stainton plays the keys at a level unrivalled in rock today and his riff in Cocaine brought a mid-song standing ovation. Willie Weeks provided a consistently concrete bass foundation for the high flying duo. The percussion was likewise extremely solid with the rock-steady work and occasional flair of brilliance from Abe Laboriel. And then there were the ladies........ the heavenly voices of Michelle John and Sharon White were absolute perfection and added immensely to the overall sound of the group. Many in the crowd had obviously come to hear the reincarnation of Blind Faith and they were rewarded with a liberal sprinkling of that meteoric band’s numbers. Some (like me) were enthralled with Clapton’s blues selections (Sleeping In The Ground comes to mind) and others by Winwood’s more ethereal renderings. The acoustic work on Layla was nearly flawless – Winwood’s guitar playing is very good and, at times, can almost make you forget the Hammond. But the evening was stolen by the seasoned combination and purely transcendent melodiousness of these two virtuosos in numbers like Voodoo Chile and Dear Mister Fantasy. The lighting was good, although a bit distracting at times; the tricky LED picture framing added to the visual effect; and the aroma of some very good bud created yet more atmosphere. However unlike some musicians today Clapton and Winwood are the music and the music is their show. They make it look so effortless........ the music is coming from inside......... and the fingers are an extension of the melodic spirit pouring out of them. When Clapton took off on Voodoo Chile, the hair on my arms stood up and a prickling sensation shot up my spine. And when I looked through the opera glasses and saw him so totally possessed by the music, I knew why!

    Eric and Steve Together!!!!! WOW!!!!

by Mayagirl on 2009-07-16MGM Grand Hotel - Las Vegas

I have been to literally hundreds of concerts in my 51 years of life, and this one certainly has landed in the top 10! NOT KIDDING! I have seen Eric C. a couple of times, and Steve W. once. They did each other amazing justice! They are so amazing as solo artists, but, together, they shone brighter then imaginable! I immediately went out and bought both the CD and DVD. Even if neither one of them sung a word, it would have been fantastic. Every song was looonnnnnnggggg. The instrumental was breathtaking!!! I would urge anyone who has not seen this show to go immediately to the internet and find out where they will be playing and travel there and see it!!!!

    Clapton and Winwood Together Again!

by jerseygirl on 2009-07-16MGM Grand Hotel - Las Vegas

Like wine, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood have aged well! I can't believe the amazing assortment of songs they did, from Cream to Traffic to Blind Faith to Derek and the Dominoes. I hadn't heard some of the songs in many years, and when they started playing, it brought tears to my eyes and right back to my high school days. Just goes to show how really talented musicians don't need fancy sets and pyrotechics to embellish their show - just honest, really fine, music. I'm so glad that I made it to Vegas to catch this show - a once in a lifetime event.

    Clapton is God.

    by wlucas23 on 2009-07-15Schottenstein Center - Columbus

Overall, it was such an incredible night! I loved Eric Clapton for years and nothing could possibly top that night in Columbus. I will say I was only slighly disappointed that he did not play more of his classic songs, but I'm certainly not complaining! Steve Winwood sounded great and was a wonderful addition to the show!
