  • A superb experience!

by Hakika on 2024-08-09Rating: 5 out of 5

I brought my daughter to see Esperanza in Oakland. We had great fun listening to and singing the various songs from her albums. Esperanza was engaging with the crowd, setting up the next song, and using the music to tune in with Self and each other. This is what is missing in the music industry. Most use flashing lights and hard struts and pyro, but to have a vocal jazz artist show her talent and express herself while connecting us all an experience I hope everyone can enjoy. In addition to this, she had dancers performing in an artistic light and shared the spotlight with other artists who didn't have to say one word but could still express themselves to us all. For those who don't really know her music yet, I hope you get to truly listen for the music, hear the sounds, and enjoy the experience.

  • Wow! A concert with full Orchestra!

This concert almost brought me back to the big band Jazz area of the 40s. However, the difference was that Spalding’s compositions of fusion jazz with complexed arrangements. An extraordinary concert full of vivid sparks of piccolos with touches of exotic grooves. Many thanks for such extravaganza concert!

  • Not what we expected

by Beth on 2022-07-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

We have enjoyed Esperanza Spalding's music over the years, but wouldn't consider ourselves huge followers of her music. The concert seemed like an interesting way to expand our musical horizons, but unfortunately, it was not a good experience. She clearly has a tremendous amount of musical talent (as does her back up musicians), but the concert seemed like more of a show for the musicians themselves, not the audience. Playing even one piece that was recognizable would have been nice, or even a few bars that could be strung together. The concert was an exploration of jazz experimentation, not remotely mainstream. Fair enough, some may have expected that, others did not (and left the show early). The audience was barely lukewarm compared to other recent shows at the NCA. Finally she only played for barely an hour and when it was over, I seriously thought it was the intermission. Very disappointed. That being said, the NCA orchestra was excellent!

Esperanza Spalding is obviously very skilled and talented. However, I found it to be music only a musician could appreciate.

  • Amazing

Despite seeing the people there that harassed me this year and getting an anxiety attack as a result of this, I stayed for the show and thoroughly loved every moment listening and watching. Thank you for calming my heart and giving me the strength to stay in the moment.

  • Dissappointing

by Rob on 2022-07-01National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

Superb musicianship - dismal repertoire. Could not discern a single melody. Percussionist was off, tenor sax was disinterested and hardly played. Esperanza was engaged - not sure why. The cuban conductor was the star of the show.

  • A Pleasant Surprise Would Be An Understatement!!

When the concert was first announced I didn't know much about Ms. Esperanza Spalding. I remember watching the Grammys the year that she won her first award and made a mental note to check out her music. Once I heard that she would be headlining the festival I made it a point to go see her live. In the months leading up to the show I listened to all four of her albums which only made me more excited to see her live. Plus she is just gorgeous. I had memorized a few lyrics here and there and was ready to sing along all night. What I witnessed was something completely different but even more amazing than I could ever imagine. From the moment she crept on stage in her neon Adidas I was captivated. What I thought would be a somewhat low key Jazz show became an effervescent Rock experience. Esperanza's energy, showmanship, creativity and beauty kept me nodding my head, snapping my fingers, smiling and clapping all night. The only downside was that the show had to end. I've been two quite a few concerts throughout my lifetime and this one is definitely one of the best. I look forward to seeing Ms. Spalding again in the future, hopefully sooner than later.
