About

Rock group Evanescence, initially formed in 1994 by Amy Lee and Ben Moody, released three EPs before the end of the ‘90s and an album called Origin. By 2002 they were signed to Wind-Up Records and expanded the line-up to include musicians John LeCompt, Will Boyd and Rocky Gray. In 2003 they released their first official album, Fallen, which sold over 15 million copies.

Evanescence released a live album, Anywhere But Home, in 2004. This was followed by Open Door in 2006, which sold one million copies in its first week. The band then waited five years to release their third album, the self-titled Evanescence. The band has toured extensively across the world. Their 2012 world tour took in a number of dates in the UK, South America , North America, Australia, China, Japan and Indonesia.

The band has received five Grammy nominations and has won two awards — for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance. Other accolades for the band include a Los Premios MTV award, a MTV Australia Video Music Award, a NRJ Music Award, two Teen Choice Awards and a World Music Award. Amy Lee was awarded the National Music Publishers' Association's Songwriter Icon Award in 2008.

The band’s line-up has varied with a number of members leaving at various stages in their history. One of the founding members, Ben Moody, left in the middle of their European tour in 2003. He was replaced by Terry Balsamo. In 2005, Will Boyd also left, with Tim McCord joining in 2006. During their 2007 tour, John LeCompt was fired and Rocky Gray decided to quit. These two members were replaced by Troy Lawham and Will Hunt.

Evanescence's lead singer Amy Lee has worked on a number of other projects. Her version of “Sally's Song†was included on the soundtrack for Disney's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Her collaborations with other artists have included Korn's “Freak on a Leash†single and Seether's Broken, which was featured on the soundtrack for The Punisher. She has also performed on tracks for David Hodges, Big Dismal and The Damning Well.

    AWESOME show

by FUNNYGUY on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

I loved the opening act too!!!!!!!!!!! She was awesome!!!!!!! Pretty Wreckless I believe was the name. I was disappointed with the crowd - although full, very quiet. I was probably one of the oldest people there and one of very few rockin out to the music!!!!!!!!! but I had a great time! definitely see both bands again!

    Amy Lee Rocks

by ranana on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

Amy Lee, the lead singer of Evanescence, has described her band's musical genre as "epic, dramatic, dark, rock." The description is probably apt although the band has a unique sound that is not easily classified. At times, the band sounds like a throw back classic hard rock band influenced by sounds like the Scorpions, Triumph, GNR, Whitesnake and others. Three of the current members can even throw around the big hair of the 80s bands, giving Evanescence a distinct deja vous feel. But Amy Lee gives this group a whole different dimension. Although she fronts a band that edges into goth metal, her vocals remain clear, well defined and distinctly melodic. She doesn't get involved in the outright screaming that defines so many other metal bands and one of Evanescence's opening acts. Instead, she displays an enormously wide range of vocal talent from piano accompanied ballads to an ethereal high end sound that intertwines so nicely with the Evanescence trademark guitar riffs. On Tuesday night, Evanescence played in Toronto at the Sound Academy, a 3200 capacity standing only concert venue. The set was about an hour and 15 minutes long and was laced with generous helpings of songs from Evanescence's newest album, a number of which were new to the crowd. Though the band has changed its line-up quite a bit since its debut platinum album in 2003, the constant is still Lee who provides the band with its unique sound. The group played through a range of pieces starting with the newer "do what you want" but then ripping into "going under" which really got the crowd going. As the set list moved along, many of the pieces seemed to blend into one another, having similar constructions and sound patterns. Given Amy Lee's formidable talents, it would be great to see the band widen the scope of its music to better showcase her abilities. As Evanascence approached the end of its set list, it hit the pieces the crowd had really come to hear. "Bring me to life" was raw and terrific as Lee moved around the stage, fist pumping, tossing her hair in all directions and egging on the audience to sing along. But the highlight of the show was unquestionably the final piece - "My Immortal." Lee sat down at the piano and began to play. Hundreds pulled out their smart phones to record the song. It sounded even better live than the studio version. Lee hit the notes beautifully. This was a song that really was worth the price of admission. Towards the end, Lee alternated between singing and inviting the audience to sing. Everyone here knew the words. If earlier parts of the concert were a bit dull or repetitive, this third encore made up for it. The same could not be said for the two opening acts. Having to listen to these two groups was a heavy price to pay to hear Evanescence. Rebel Son, a Southern U.S. band that flies a confederate flag on its web site, played a zeppelin influenced set of screaming metal. It seemed to me that the audience was mainly hoping that it would end quickly, which it did, after about a half hour. Shortly afterwards, the Pretty Reckless, a New York based band, followed. The sound was admittedly reckless but not very pretty. With Nirvana influenced screaming and not much of a melodic sound to the vocals, the lead singer pole-danced her way through the band's "controversial" song - "going down." The band's cover of Audioslave's "like a stone" was passable but not particularly inspiring. Fittingly, the band approached the end of its 40 minute set with a song called "make me want to die" which probably matched much of the audience reaction to this performance. Since the venue was a standing only first come first serve arrangement, the audience had to put up with these two sub-par opening acts to get to the band they had come hear. Both were quite loud and less than stellar. This was probably more punishment than should have been required to see Amy Lee and Evanescence live. But as mentioned above, the last few Evanescence songs probably made up for any inconveniences.

    Evanescence was awesome!!!

    by Gruesome3 on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

Evanescence was awesome!!! They played alot of great old tunes and a lot off the new album. Rival Sons were good, and Pretty reckless sucks. I would have to say that two opening bands are a little much, especially on a Tuesday night.

    A Magical Show

by Musicmonster on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

Amy Lee sings beautifully live! The rest of the band are into what they do and look like they are having fun, especially when they rock out together! I was front row, in front of one of their guitarists and many times during the show we would make eye contact, sing the lyrics together, and just smile at each other, it was awesome and made the concert so much more personal! He threw a guitar pick and I thought I dropped it but didn't! Showed it to him and he laughed. Then gave out more at the end of the show and I got another one placed in my hand by him! Amy looked amazing and worked the stage well. They played songs from all their albums (3 from Fallen, about 4 from The Open Door, and the rest from their self-titled album) which was amazing. Unforgettable and everything I hoped the show would be!

    Excellent Performance!

by KaiSuteki on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

Evanescence was by far the best act of the night! As soon as they got on stage the crowd roared with excitement. They play some new songs and most of our old favourites. I liked the way they mixed the new songs in with the older songs. The only problem I had with the show as the wall of tall people standing right in the front and centre of the crowd. It was harder for the shorter people to see from behind. I also didn't like that the crowd was most concerned with making their cell phone video's of the performance and blocking every bodies view of the stage. There were also people smoking cigarettes and weed which wasn't pleasant.

    AMY was AMAZING

by sipandchat on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

I took my daughter who also sings, plays the piano and performed some of Amy Lee's songs. She was impressed that Amy sounded the same as her CD which tells me that Amy is a true musician. She really rocked the stage and I was totally blown away when she played the piano and sing......my daughter is working on that currently. I was really hoping for us to go backstage to meet Amy, but that option was unavailable to us. It would have made her nite if she got to meet Amy Lee--her "INSPIRATION" Next year we would really like to meet Amy Lee if she comes back to Toronto.

    Back with a bang!

by FalseProphet on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

Five years has not diminished Amy Lee's voice or stage presence one bit. If anything, her voice is more powerful than ever. The band opened strong with "What You Want", the first single off their new self-titled album, and continued to rock through several tracks from all three LPs. Lee sat down at the piano for a couple of numbers before they completed the set with crowd-pleasers from Fallen and The Open Door. Fittingly, the last song of their 3-song encore was "My Immortal", beginning and ending with Lee alone on piano.

Amy Lee good but concert mediocre!!

by MANDERBEAST on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

My boyfriend and myself watched the concert on Tuesday night at the sound academy. Both of us had never been to the sound academy before and we found the venue amazing! It felt more intimate then the ACC because it's tiny and you are pretty close to the stage. The opening bands were remarkable, talk about talent! Amy Lee and the boys came on two hours later, what a talent that girl has! The band was fantastic, and Amy Lee blew us away with her angel like voice. The only Negitive thing I have to say about the entire experience was she played almost every song off her new cd, although the music was good, the crowd wasn't very involved, because I don't think they knew the music or the lyrics. She played 3 older songs, which then had the crowd very involved. I only wish she played a little bit more of their older stuff, and introduced maybe only 3-4 songs off the new cd. Over all i am glad I seen them, they are a great band with extremely talented people, however that being said, my boyfriend and I both agreed that one time was enough, for us. :)

    average

    by DW78 on 2011-10-27Sound Academy - Toronto

Im a fan of the music and there is obviously strong talent but i wasnt overly sold on the live event. all ages made for an excess of parents that you could tell werent too interested to be there. the band itself didnt go far from the regular cd tunes. ive read other reviews and i would agree, felt like i was listening to an itunes play list. there wasnt much of a performance. lacked authenticity. ive been to a number of concerts this year and truthfully i was expecting more. i like the new tunes as well but again it dint stray much from hearing it on the radio. im interested to see more pretty wreckless though. i wasnt familar with them.
