"Hendrix Experience" quite an experience!
by Mackeul on 2010-11-06National Arts Centre - OttawaThe artists played Hendrix songs, so we knew the material was going to be great. There is always a fine line when playing someone else's material between staying true to the original, yet putting your own flair or personal signature on the songs. Given that this was called the Hendrix Experience, I was hoping for some trueness to Hendrix, but was a bit disappointed. Many of the artists seemed to setlle into using their own very recognizable signature licks and cuts on Hendrix tunes and I thought it felt a little wrong. In essence, if I want to see Eric Johnson play Eric Johnson licks, I'll go see an Eric Johnson concert.. This was true for most of the acts, not just EJ. The rendition of Purple Haze gave me mixed feelings On the one hand, the Slide Brothers played a terrific sounding song! The problem was that 2 of the 3 Slide Brothers didn't seem to be into it... and I don't know, it just seems wrong to play such a great song sitting down. That being said, artists such as Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd whose styles fit well with the Hendrix tunes really stole the show. KWS especially blew the roof off, he was absolutely amazing! Noah Hunt's (KWS band) vocals were also a very nice fit for Jimi's songs. The final thing to mention is the sound. You would think that it would have been absolute A++ quality given the venue and the artists, but it was at times muddy sounding and at other times so piercing that it hurt the ears (especially Vai's guitar and Living Color's Corey Glover vocals).
