About

After more than 30 years of a lifestyle that often required lots of time on the road, country legend George Strait has saddled up for what he says will be his final tour, a two-year outing dubbed The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.

More than 20 farewell concerts take place between January and May of 2014, and the shows -- many of which will feature a big-name special guest such as Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Martina McBride, or Sheryl Crow -- are proving to be hot tickets as fans celebrate the storied career of the country mainstay. He announced his retirement from the road during a September 2012 press conference in Nashville, and played more than 20 farewell shows during early 2013.

Strait doesn't plan to ride into the sunset -- he's just done with long tours. He recently renewed his deal with MCA Records, so he'll keep releasing new music and plans to also play select concert dates in the future. But grueling trips aboard the tour bus are in his rearview mirror.
After the Urban Cowboy ethos dominated country music in the late '70s, Strait emerged in the early '80s with his take on classic country stylings, and is often credited with paving the way for other neo-traditionalist superstars like Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakam, and Randy Travis.
Strait's catalog includes timeless hits like "Amarillo by Morning," "All My Ex's Live in Texas," "Love Without End, Amen," and "I've Come to Expect it From You."

A 2006 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait's remarkable career has included a record 60 No. 1 songs on the country chart. He holds many other country sales records, including most No. 1 albums and most gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums. Only Elvis Presley and The Beatles have more combined gold and platinum albums in their catalogs.

A native of Poteet, Texas, south of San Antonio, Strait grew up in neighboring Frio County. He first took up music in high school as a member of a rock garage band. After a stint in the Army, he  earned an Agriculture degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos while playing in a bar band that performed around central and south Texas.

Strait signed with MCA Records in 1981, after Erv Woolsey, who ran one of the bars Strait's band played, urged Nashville talent scouts to check him out. Woolsey went on to become Strait's manager.

George Strait! KING of Country INDEED!!

by Jinx on 2009-07-12Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Last night was the George Strait Concert at the stampede! What an amazing evening of music! He was perfect! no wonder they call him the King of Country!... my only complaint was that I'm vertically challenged and even when standing I couldn't see over the crowds... next time if my tickets aren't within the first 5 rows on the floor... I'm getting the lower bowl seats! :P LOL! over all... the music was more than amazing! an evening I'll never forget!

George Strait is the King of Kountry Music!!!

by Trailrider on 2009-07-12Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

George Strait is the king of country music. His ability to flawlessly sing and deliver a performance that exceeds the quality of his CD's and videos is absolutely amazing. As everyone also knows, Strait and the Ace in the Hole band select only the finest country music as their own . . . . a talent that shines through their live performance and recordings. Strait also mixed up the lineup in the Ace in the Hole band and their music holds the riches harmony that I have ever heard - exceeding the flawless quality of recorded tracks. Another tribute to Strait's fierce loyalty to the Cowboy Way, his Texas tradition and his love and respect for the evolution of country music was to reserve his encore for performing Haggard and Cash - an ultimate tribute in immortalizing these revolutionaries and their music. This is the third performance I have been blessed to enjoy, and although it didn't hold the majesty and excitement of seeing Strait for the very first time . . . . the quality of the music and the unbounded commitment to entertain the audience this man displays is amazing.

I think George Strait was even better than Reba!!!

by Suzanne on 2009-07-12Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Reba was pretty damn good but I think George Strait was even better! Gord Bamford opened for him and he was pretty good. George came on around 8:30, sang until 10 and then did a 20 minutes encore. He has such an amazing voice. He sounds exactly like he does on his albums. I would definitely go see him again!

    Too short

by ryanthomps on 2009-07-12Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I thought the concert was too short and very expensive. He played for an hour and twenty all in and two tickets were almost $300 for upper deck. His voice is so awesome but it seemed as soon as I got into it he was finished.
