Girl Talk in Concert

Girl Talk (aka Pittsburgh's Gregg Gillis) has been constructing meticulous sample-based music since 2000. His early work was known for its raw experimental nature, but by the release of his 2006 album, Night Ripper, that style evolved into genre-smashing, breakneck-paced party jams. Night Ripper consisted of over 300 songs, from wildly disparate Top 40 genres and eras, mashed up and layered together into one cohesive collage. It received critical acclaim, and the attention resulted in a rapidly growing fan base. Gillis ended up quitting his biomedical engineering day job one year later.

Girl Talk continued to develop his signature style with the release of Feed the Animals in 2008 and All Day in 2010. Each album grew increasingly detailed and complex. He steadily toured over the following years, bringing his renowned confetti-covered and sweat-soaked performances to venues ranging from house party basements to major festivals. By 2014, Gillis began focusing on collaborative work producing hip hop for some of his favorite rap artists. That same year, he released "Broken Ankles," an EP with Freeway. Since "Broken Ankles", Gillis has steadily earned an impressive list of production credits and collaborations with his artistic contemporaries including, but not limited to, Wiz Khalifa, T-Pain, Tory Lanez, Young Nudy, Bas, Cozz, Erick The Architect (from Flatbush Zombies), Smoke DZA, and Don Q.

Girltalk - Great show, but far too short a set.

by KerryD on 2011-07-11Sound Academy - Toronto

Girltalk was incredible. I saw him last year and once again he whipped the crowd into an all out frenzy from the moment he dropped the first beat until his final goodbye - which really was the big problem - it came way, way too soon. He played for barely 45 minutes, then came back out for about a 10 minute encore. This is really unacceptable. Yes, it was a really, really good set - but when I pay $40+ to see a DJ (or anyone) I expect to get my money's worth with at least 90 minutes. This was very disappointing. Furthermore, I'm not quite sure why Sound Academy decided not to keep the party going?!? If they had a regular DJ there, the crowd could have continued dancing and buying drinks ($$) instead of being left hanging with the show and music coming to a premature end....

Greg - Girl Talk blew the roof off!

by Simplesam on 2011-07-11Sound Academy - Toronto

The show was simply amazing. My only regret was that it didn't go longer (just under 2 hours) but he mixed tracks from different albums and brought in new never heard before mixes which is always exciting. Highly recommended to any music lover. Can't wait to hear his actual track with Jim Jones and Lloyd!

    Girltalk live wasn't worth it

by Anonymous on 2011-07-11Sound Academy - Toronto

He had good energy and I do like his music... Personally I was looking for more of a club vibe where girl talk would mashup songs live rather than laying down tracks from his latest release. After the concert it was about 12pm and we needed to find another party to go to but because it was later we had to stand in line :(. I don't know why this was not treated like an all night party... this means girl talk is the headliner and there are other DJ's that open and close the night.

    Girl talk at sound academy

    by rsn22 on 2011-07-11Sound Academy - Toronto

His performance: unbelievable. My friends and I were selected to dance on stage while he played during the whole show. Only downside, sound quality wasn't great, and we couldn't always tell what was playing. This could have just been because we were dancing right beside the speakers. Other than that, looking over one shoulder and seeing the crowd, and looking over the other to see Girl Talk one foot away mashing up fantastic songs was an amazing experience and great night!

Girl Talk was a non-stop dance party!

by koraline on 2011-07-10Sound Academy - Toronto

Although I wish that his set was a lot longer, the crowd and music was awesome. Complete with balloons, tissue paper, and crazy lights - the show kept everyone on their feet, regardless of what music genres they're into. Girl Talk's mash-ups are unlike any other, and I would definitely attend another one of his shows.

Girl Talk - Like Nothing Else

    by Ste7en on 2011-04-19Métropolis - Montreal

Girl Talk is possibly the greatest act I've seen live ever. He has so much energy and the atmosphere is amazing - nowhere else do you get so many people dancing with each other - this transcends the normal 'club' dancing experience. There's no real way to do Girl Talk justice in a review, but I'd recommend that if you ever get a chance to see Girl Talk live, you don't pass it up. If you miss the opportunity to see Girl Talk live, you should equate that to you not having lived. Enough said?

    What a party!

by nadinefrommontreal on 2011-03-03Métropolis - Montreal

I missed the early GirlTalk performances (the ones accompanied by chaos and arrests) so I was hoping that there would still be as much excitement in a more formal setting and the answer was yes yes yes. The man delivered an amazing party complete with balloons, confetti, beach balls, giant inflatables, on-stage dance party, and most importantly amazing mixes and over-the-top energy. I danced my pants off and had an amazing time!

    Girltalk rocks Toronto!

by KerryD on 2010-06-21Sound Academy - Toronto

What a show! The energy and excitement of Girltalk's set last Friday night at Sound Academy was out of this world! He invited the crowd to join him on stage, which created a great dynamic as there was 360 degrees of dancing, smiling, very happy people! His mixes were brilliant with 80's, 90's rock mashed with the best in hip hop... Great performer, great night!

Girl Talk Gets The Party Started and Never Lets Go

    by drea666 on 2010-06-19Sound Academy - Toronto

From beginning to end Girl Talk had the whole venue moving. Through a great array of new mixes and old and the atmosphere and music combined to make a unforgettable experience. my only complaint is that the same people were on the stage the whole night kinda wish they allowed different people up there!

    Girl Talk live was intense!

by Kellers on 2010-06-19Sound Academy - Toronto

This was my first time seeing Gregg Gillis preform live, and I was not disappointed! His energy on stage radiated through the crowd, and his mixed music went on seamlessly for the duration of his time on stage. (i.e there were no breaks, just dancing with all you got!)

    Girl Talk

by RockyVancouver on 2009-09-21Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Great party......HORRIBLE sound. I've seen girl talk a couple of other times, one of these times was at the commodore. The sound last night was NOT GOOD! It was really disappointing because I know how good he can be - but last night you could not even make out the different cuts he used. TOO BAD

I've seen him before and this show was just as mind blowing. Tons of energy and couldn't ask for a more fun Sunday night dance party.
