Gladys Knight On Tour

The "Empress of Soul" is back. One of Motown's most iconic acts, Gladys Knight, returns to the big stage in 25 cities across North America for her 2022 tour. Although she's perhaps best known for her original rendition of the R&B classic "I Heard it Through the Grapevine (1967)," Knight has remained in the limelight as one of the all-time greats for the last 60 years. The seven-time Grammy award winner has won across three categories including Pop, R&B and Gospel, and has another 22 nominations spanning across five decades. Over her illustrious career, she has released 10 studio albums, with her debut album Miss Gladys Knight releasing in 1978, and her most recent work Where My Heart Belongs coming out in 2014. In 1996, her band Gladys Knight & the Pips was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Knight was also included on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers of All Time list. Off the stage, Knight has authored two books, including a biography titled Each Line of Pain and Glory: My Life Story, and made various appearances on television and the big screen. Her most recent appearances came when she played herself in Coming 2 America in 2021 and when she wore the bee costume on "The Masked Singer" in 2019.

Gladys Knight in Concert

Gladys Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Merald Knight Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth on May 28, 1944. She has a sister (Brenda) and two brothers (Merald "Bubba" Jr. and David). As a child and into her teens, Knight sang in her local church choir where she refined her Motown chops. She had her first breakthrough into the spotlight at the age of 8 when she won Ted Mack's The Original Amateur Hour contest. Over the next few years, Knight and four of her family members (Bubba, Edward Patten, Langston George, and William Guest) formed a performing group to be called Gladys Knight & the Pips. After a successful run in the local Atlanta music scene, the group received a record deal with Brunswick Records in 1957 and began opening for legends in the music scene and influences on their style such as Sam Cooke. The group's first record to chart was in fact a cover of Johnny Otis' "Every Beat of My Heart," which made it into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Knight left the group in 1962 after a string of successful releases such as "Letter Full of Tears" to start a family with her husband Jimmy Newman. However, she returned to the group two years later and went on to critical success over the course of the next five decades.

    Gladys was spectacular

by Otay on 2012-04-05River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Ms Knight showed her versatility taking us back to the Motown years ,to the present. she brought back many fond memories of my youth. My only two disappointments were, the concert was too short and we weren't graced with at least one encore.

    Bedda each time!

by MoSoul on 2012-04-04River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

We've seen Ms. Gladys all 3 times that she's played the Rock. By far, this was her best performance. Her energy level, crowd engagement and voice were outstanding from beginning to end. Her band, backup singers and especially her beeg bro Bubba, exemplify the talent and professionalism she expects on stage. We felt being on Dancing with the Stars has gotten her into great physical and mental shapel; our only complaint, her very appreciative fans clapped and clapped till their boomer hands seized up but alas, NO encore!

Gladys Knight was not on form that night

by Gladfan on 2012-04-03River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

We waited for 4 months to see Gladys. I found her appearance drab as were her backup singers. Everything was grey. Her voice was inconsistent, too loud in places, almost overly dramatic . I was disappointed. She seemed to be very tired . The group were excellent. The stage effects were really good, The show started at 08:10pm and finished at 09:20pm. During this time a "pip" came on the stage and sang and joke danced for 15 minutes. Gladys sat on a stool, He was good but wasn't Gladys. The audience appeared surprised at the shortness of the concert but continued clapping and whistling and stamping their feet for up to 5 minutes or more after she had left the stage. Gladys did not return. Finally everyone left. A lot of money for such a short show. Don't think I will go again. This is the second time I have been. Really enjoyed last year. Shame.

Left U Wanting More or Just Wasn't Enough

by Dickenswonderdust on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Gladys is amazing...the show was short and.....20 minutes plus was designated to a comedy routine by a previous pip and it was entertaining ..but it wasn't Gladys..Gladys sung some of her favorite songs by Ella Fitzgeralds...not Glady's songs.....and then one song was a Barbara Strisands song....so that is four songs....not Gladys Knight songs.....in the roughly 1 hour segment that Gladys sung...you reallyw anted to hear Gladys Knight songs.....one new song was soon to be released on her new album...it was great...because it was a Gladys song.....so the show definately left you wanting more of Gladys......because of that a person is disappointed..........Gladys with her timeless voice left you knowing she would of sounded exactly like her album JUST FOR YOU...but she didn't sing any of those.....the show to me should include what we want to hear, what we relate to.....I didn't go to hear Ella Fitzgerald or her songs, or Barbara Striesand...I wanted to hear...Gladys Knight songs....and if the concert was going to be that short.....I want only Gladys Knight songs....

Gladys is very classy and very talented

by SIMS on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Only reason for 3 stars not 5 is that she did not come out for an encore. Maybe the 5 hours that she spent rehearsing for Dancing with the Star took it all out of her.

great show (for the most part)

by QC2B on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

can't say i'm a big soul fan, but my wife is a big gladys fan. so about an hour into the show i'm thinking, this is the best concert i've ever seen, and i've seen lots. gladys, after rehearsing that day for 'dancing with the stars' for 5 hours was putting out an amazing amount of energy, fantastic powerful voice, looking all of 30, gorgeous, and fabulous 9 member band. then the wheels came loose. her brother, a 'pip', came out (don't know nothin' about the pips, but the crowd cheered) and the show took a weird vaudville turn for about 20 minutes. then she sang 'midnite train', they closed the curtains, and that was it. so, a 60 minute show really and no encore even though the crowd cheered for 10 minutes (never seen that before, except where a crowd got rowdy). so, little disappointed, but she worked so hard i just can't take a star off her, although i should. bhb.

    Unforgettable Knight

by onewing on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

It was a wonderful night, so glad we went. Just a little disappointed that she didn't sing more of her old songs, and was hoping she would bring out Tristan, her partner on Dancing With the Stars.

    Gladys Knight was amazing!!

by Lumlum on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Fantastic show! I was very disappointed in the sound. I came to hear the lead singer. The band was way to loud in the mix, especially the guitar and keys. Otherwise the show was fantastic. It would have been nice to have an encore.

    Gladys was exceptional

by Kenny63 on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Diving into "Love Overboard" right off the bat - Gladys had the audience right in the plam of her hand and for us, she was instantly in our hearts. With an ever present sense of humor and joy, and sheer pleasure in her gifts, we were transported through time, and space, music, passion, history and the gammit of human emotions. Truly an artist, truly a perfomer, and a great set of musicians and vocalist to compliment - it was indeed a night to remember. Sharp as a tack, witty and clever, a must see . . . . . always for forever.

Gladys Knight at River Rock was disappointing

by Wasafanx on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Second time seeing her at River Rock, and this time unfortunately was disappointing. She looks lovely and still sings well, it was just that there was not enough of "her" singing her own songs . The comedic act of former PIP and brother, was not at all entertaining and for the price we paid, $ 180 for two tickets, we expected a better show. Walked out of there giving it a 3-10.

    gladys good alone

by HVTr on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Concert was short-80 minutes. Gladys was fine on her old hits, of course her voice has lost a bit. Show marred seriously by too loud back up band and a too long guest appearance by her brother-a good performer, but not of the same class as his sister. We all loved Gladys, though, especially her old hits and the old jazz masters she did very well, with a softer sound from the band. She may have had a voice problem near the end, as she didn't do an encore, in spite of an enthusiastic audience response.

Great show, a little short but she put on a super performance. Food facilities at the River Rock need improving, tried to get something to eat prior and landed up at the food court which was a disaster.

    Gladys Knight

by GladitsNight on 2012-04-02River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Gladys can still sign although she may be tired from the Dancing with the Stars deal. They announced that she had worked on her dancing for 5 hours before the show. The show was only 80 minutes and her brother, one of the Pips, came on for at least 15 minutes. When they did not have an encore and simply just left you know she is getting old and can't take it anymore.

    Gladys @ Casino Rama

    by NK2010 on 2012-02-16Casino Rama - Orillia

Truly happy that I purchased these tickets in 2009 and got to see the greatness of Gladys LIVE. Her voice is still amazing and she has fantastic stage presence. Sound quality is great and even though I got a set near the isle, the seating layout was still good. Able to see everything without a problem. Note: If you are under 40 you may possibly be the youngest person in the room (I sure was) but I belted out every word with Gladys and had a blast. A great event to bring your s/o, parents, or even children to.

    Great show!!

by fhandkb on 2010-04-05The Avalon Ballroom Theatre At Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort - Niagara Falls

Gladys was in good form that night and her band was top notch!! She has an incredible voice and was demonstrated on many of the songs she sang. The appearance of her older brother, the last surviving Pip, was well timed and he was very funny. The stage production was well executed and flawwless too. Lots of fun, a really good night.
