This is my second year going to the Goh ballet's Nutcracker. I enjoyed the performance quite a bit this year. Details -
-There are many kids involved in the performance, and I think it's great. Kids, and especially Clara, were wonderful, well rehearsed and knew what they were supposed to be doing. Mice and lamb were absolutely adorable. And slightly older kids (e.g. Chinese children, little angels, party girls/boys danced very well.
-Drosselmeir seemed not as good at doing tricks as the previous year's magician. I think last year they used an actually professional magician. This year's is an older ballet dancer/choreographer. He also got tangled up in his long cape at times, and this was a bit distracting.
-Quite a bit of the older girls' technique #e.g. waltz of the flowers, snowflakes# was not as polished as I would have liked to see. Heavy jumps, unpointed toes, etc.
-This year I absolutely loved and adored their soloist Paloma Herrera. She was so good and lovely. She took my breath away. I also enjoyed the dancing of Dmitri, the prince. He was very good!
-Biggest disappointment and distraction was the terrible choir. Two groups of singers come to the sides of the stage to sing during the snowflake dance. Last year it was truly wonderful and special. At first you couldn't even tell where the singing was coming from, they were so in tune with the orchestra. This year however, they were late compared to the music. But most importantly, left and right group were not singing together. Right group would start, and then the left group would realize they are supposed to start as well. At times, they would not even catch up to each other. Also, their pitch was not in tune with the orchestra.
-Despite some of these quirks, the overall quality and entertainment value is very good. Second act's angels, Russian dancers, Chinese dancers and Merlitons were wonderful. First act provides a lot of entertainment too. Battler scene is very fun, and snow queen and king duo is great as well.
