Gorillaz + Nerd = double spectacular show

by Cherrycherryboomboom on 2010-11-03VIEJAS ARENA AT AZTEC BOWL SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY - San Diego

Me and my boyfriend were seated (mostly stood up and rocked out the whole performance) right of the stage, row 8. The experience started with an up close and personal NERD performance with Pharrell commanding his band, included 2 drummers and 2 fabulous female dancers. Songs from new album Nothing were pumped into Viejas to get the crowd warmed up nicely for Gorillaz. Nice album, plus older songs to finish his set. The song "hypnotize you" got the place groovin and a little hot and steamy. Gorillaz came out in full force not too shortly after, the complete army of sea-faring female sailors on strings and tuba-wielding Chicago Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and of course, Damon conducting the mission of journey to the Plastic Beach. We saw them headline Coachella 2010 earlier this year and their tour show was slightly different from their appearance in Indio (where Coachella outdoor festival was held). Little Dragon, Bobby Womack represented with amazing voices and overall the show was a magnificent combination of entertainment, digital narration (the videos accompanying the songs with Murdoc blowing up the studio by the end of the show), Noodle re-appears, and to top things off, Damon and his bandmates had a blast on stage. Lebanon Orchestra also managed to be on stage with everyone else. Viejas Arena was bumping the whole time, and the fact that they only used half the arena made for a real intimate, personal experience. I felt like they were throwing us a hell of a party on the Plastic Beach. A real positive experience.

The Gorillaz with special guest N.E.R.D was AMAZING!!! N.E.R.D started it off perfectly and it just got even better! The string section and the brass ensemble were absolutely amazing. The quality of instruments and music was fabulous! And Damon Albarn... well is one of the best live performers I have ever seen!

    Gorillaz

by DD55 on 2010-10-18Air Canada Centre - Toronto

I thought NERD was an interesting opening act. Never listened to any of their music prior to the show. Enjoyed a number of songs enough that I went out and bought one of their CDs the next day. Gorillaz was very good. Played all the favorite songs. Tons of people on stage ( 28 at one point), loads of special guests, including Mick and Paul from The Clash. The band was definitely secondary to the massive video screen. Would have liked a stronger stage presence by the band and less video, but, I guess that's what the Gorillaz are all about.

    Amazing

The place was packed and the vibe was amazing. it opened with the orchestral opening to plastic beach, which set the stage for an unforgettable night. Favorite concert thus far.

Its more King Kong than Congo!

by Fury on 2010-10-16Air Canada Centre - Toronto

The stage and screen was awesome. I found myself watching the screen more than the actual concert. Having the live band is always a plus. The transitions from song to song was a little weak however they were just in Detroit the night before but I'm not making excuses. The Encore arguably was the best part of the concert. De La Soul man what can I say! Clint Eastwood! I think they should of ended with that song however they played one more and I felt it sucked a little out of the crowd. They performed well and overall it was a good concert. I am glad I went. N.E.R.D was alright however because the Gorillaz had a screen and crazy lights behind their name it was hard to remember anybody else that night. Fury Out.

Believe the Hype- it's just that good

by OBlade on 2010-10-16Air Canada Centre - Toronto

The Gorillaz know what they're doing. This was an amazing concert. Even without Lou Reed or Mos Def they rock. Every song does. The visuals are nothing less than spectacular. Everything was great. If you're missing this concert, you're missing the greatest concert of 2010, easily. So just don't miss it.

    Super Gorillaz!

by MetalLover69 on 2010-10-16Air Canada Centre - Toronto

I have never seen anything like the Gorillaz and probably never will. Mick Jones and Paul Simonon are idols of mine and were the perfect additions to the band...Unbeleivable! I was not looking forward to the opening act N.E.R.D. and came in late while they were playing. I was taken by surprise. The last song that they played was one of the coolest acts that I've seen in a long time. Check these guys out, they are really good.

    Lackluster

by Toosavvy on 2010-10-16Air Canada Centre - Toronto

From the beginning to the very end, the energy level remained the same; stagnant! Where I was hoping to see show chalk filled with crazy stage antics and unforgettable props, I was instead treated to a video screen. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Had this show been in a smaller, more intimate venue like Massey Hall, I think it may have stood a better chance of creating an impact. From this experience, I'm left confused. Is it a problem with the Air Canada Center as a music venue, or with the band and what seemed to be a lazy, bottled performance? I'll have to figure this one out!

Gorillaz- The Biggest and Greatest Ever!

by deafman on 2010-10-16Air Canada Centre - Toronto

Just Wow! I've seen almost everybody there is in the last 40 years and nothing compares to the Gorillaz show at the ACC. It was a total package of great grooves, media, mixed genres, big time musicians collaborating together and the crazy back story. You know sometimes you go and pay big money for a small show? This one was worth about 5 times more than the face ticket price. I don't know how the numbers work out for a tour like this with about 25-30 performers, huge support crew, expensive animation and star cameos but it was sure great for the fan.
