About

Singer, songwriter, and musician Wally De Backer, a.k.a. Gotye, first appeared upon the Australian music scene in 2006 with his self-recorded album Like Drawing Blood – an effort that yielded his first local hit, “Hearts a Mess,” and won an AIR (Australian Independent Record) award. He also found success as part of the Australian trio The Basics. In 2011, however, Gotye would catapult to fame with the undeniably infectious song “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra) -- the video of which spread across the web like wildfire. Music fans worldwide took notice and, almost entirely on the merit of this one breakthrough hit, bought tickets and filled venues to see Gotye perform LIVE. A gifted drummer and percussionist as well as a vocalist with impressive range, Gotye’s often times understated but always innovative music -- a mix of quirky electronic sounds and acoustic rhythms -- evokes a mood both retro and modern. Songs like “Eyes Wide Open,” Easy Way Out,” and “State of the Art” take on new dimension during his concerts which feature De Backer on drums and various other instruments, and which utilize projected images that echo the striking visual artistry of Gotye’s music videos. Although his voice has often been compared to Peter Gabriel and Sting, his music is more inspired by Godley & Crème and DJ Shadow.

Gotye was amazing. He played so many instruments. I liked how he stood behind his band at times.

    Great Concert, Fun time.

by annasophiabby on 2012-09-02Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I attended this concert because i liked the artist and i was expecting his live performance to be just that, good. However, it was beyond that. Goyte is amazing live and a fun performer. He is a super talented young lad, playing most of the instruments set before him, and i was definitely blown away with his ability to play percussion very well. if you had doubted this artist i would challenge you to reconsider, because he was really good.

I would go to any concert again of his in a heartbeat. He played all the instruments beautifully. Definitely someone you need to see live to fully appreciate their music.

    A night of pure talent!

What an awesome summer-ender it was to see Gotye at the Orpheum. Not only was I fascinated by his music, the venue itself was captivating. It was such a double treat!

Great show - Gotye is a fun musician. Good for all ages. Would have been better outdoors at Deer Lake as originally planned.

    Gotye, what a blast!

by Flight on 2012-09-01Stampede Corral - Calgary

Wow! What a show! Rivals anything I've seen. Better than a number of acts that use visual tracks to accompany the music. And what music! From a start with a scratchy voice, Gotye got more and more energetic, with driving drumming and with a pitch perfect multi octave voice that took you to new highs. From the melow Bronte to a quirky use of the chicks in the audience for the female part of Somebody..., to the electronic State of the Art, to the rocking I Feel Better, this guy can make music! Buy his album! BTW, the sound engineers for the opening acts, Jonti and Chairlift need to be shot. The sound balance was deplorable! C'mon Calgary, we can do better than that.

    Amazing performance

by Jacquelinegrace on 2012-09-01Stampede Corral - Calgary

I can't believe it wasn't sold out or sold out at a much larger venue. They do not get enough credit for their talent and stage presence. Many bands who play as much as they do would probably not give as much for the audience being so small.. I saw them at Coachella and Calgary and will buy tickets to see them again.

Gotye is an amazingly talented individual and an entertaining person to watch on the big screen. We were bummed when we had to leave early to put the kids to bed.

Wally De Becker is unbelievable and an amazing musician. The addition of the animation behind the live music was very cool. I absolutely loved this show.

    Gotye...... Quite the musician.....

by Anonymous on 2012-08-31Stampede Corral - Calgary

Though most only know the one over played song his last cd (3rd) is great. All songs are unique in there own right. He is an amazing musician. After hearing some songs from his previous albums I did not know I will defiantly be looking to find them. Unfortunate more didn't come out to see the band...

    Concert of the Year

by DestinoLaDifunta on 2012-08-31Stampede Corral - Calgary

A pity this multi-instrumental talent was stuck in the Corral. The professional sound techniques used by Goyte were just as innovative on stage as through his new album. Shame there was a lack of advertisement for the gig as if people knew his music it would have definatly been sold-out and not just for his one single (Somebody that I used to know). Next time he comes to town give him a venue he deserves like Engineered Air Theatre or if you must, Macewan. Those acoustics need to be heard!

    Gotye was fantastic

by Flight on 2012-08-31Stampede Corral - Calgary

It was such a shame that more people did not know more about Gotye and the venue was half full. Fortunately we had seen some of their music videos and suspected that there was more to them than a one hit wonder. Those who did attend had a wonderful time and were treated to an amazing evening of entertainment and good music and surprisingly artistic graphics.

Wally is truly amazing! Is there any instrument he can't play? Really fun that he made the crowd part of his show.

    Disappointing

by kakunia on 2012-08-30Shaw Conference Centre - Edmonton

... don't get me wrong ... LOVED Gotye - when he finally got on stage, which wasn't 'til 9:45pm ... his opening acts however? Worst music I ever heard, not to mention the half hour silence breaks between all acts, including prior to Gotye. Bottom line? Save yourself $70, buy/download his CD and listen to his music at home - or don't show up to the show until it's time for him to get on stage ... you'll save either money or time, both of which in my opinion are worth more than the experience of being at this concert.

    Gotye - A true showman

by Korgatron on 2012-08-30Shaw Conference Centre - Edmonton

Despite most people only knowing him for "that song that those 5 people played on one guitar", Gotye is a virtuostic musician. His hypnotic beats were perfectly matched to mesmerizing visuals to create a truly immersive experience for the lucky few who attended. I think He made a couple hundred new fans that night.

    Just as amazing live.

by msjgau on 2012-06-01Kool Haus - Toronto

Great great concert. As an amazing musician the only drawback I noticed was that he was so into the music that he didn't have an outgoing presence to the crowd. Which is A OK if the music is good and it was amazing. Kymbra opened and came back for her part in Someone that I used to know.
