I'd just like to add to my review that I first saw Grand Funk Railroad in 1972,they were an amazing young rock n roll talent then and now with a few changes they still rock, great to see Don Brewer and his drum solo's,lots of super hits,I can never say a bad word about them, will see them as long as they perform.I thought War also did a decent job, some of the old songs etched into people's minds from the old days.A rockin night at Rama.
I saw Grand Funk last Year and was thrilled at their showmanship and work ethic. This time around they seem to have a superstar entitlement attitude. They seemed to just be putting in time for a paycheck. Last Year Grand Funk by themselves played for close to 2 Hrs. This year War played for 1 Hour and Grand Funk just shy of 1 Hour. It was as dissapointing a concert as I have seen in years. The Songs are still good and they have maintained their voices, but a little more effort Boys!!!!!!!!!!!
Instrumentally great! Voices also very good considering their age! Did find there was tooooo much showboating!! War seems to be consistent with this as it is part of the show bur Grand Funk had too many drawn out songs for " Look at me, Look what I can do!" They play excellent, don't need to make it so annoyingly long!
War was great, a four star preformence for sure. On the other hand Grand funk was an epic fail. War didn't play long enough and GF played too long. Therefore a two star rating overall
Kind of felt cheated........Short concert and not even an encore........last time we will see them....Goodbye Grand Funk...time to retire.......
Unfortunately War who does not deserve a poor rating gets dragged down by the absolute disaster of a performance by Grand Funk Railroad who should have never bothered showing up. Mark did not play guitar and barely sang, in fact most of the time he ran around like an idiot pointing at people and smiling. How sad that this once great band is now a shadow of its former self. Next time you do not want to perform do us all a favor and stay at home. War was a class act and performed very well. The venue is very poor and they don't even allow water bottles in the amphitheater, it will be a long time before I ever return there.
I thought they rushed throughtheir set. I have seen this line-up 3 times now. Good show but not the same without Mark Farner. That's Grand Funk Railroad. I'd pass on another opportunity to see this version of G.F.R. Long live Mark, Don & Mel!!
A good thing that has happened of late with a lot of bands who have had their biggest impact in the past is that they just don't go thru the motions. Certainly not Grand Funk. There is so much musicianship and vocal talent there that that could not possibly happen. Originally a power trio - now a five piece - great balance of personalities on stage - from the extroverted to the quieter - all putting out the team effort. And when Mel's bass started thumping out Some Kinda Wonderful - the sell out crowd was on their feet - the positive vibration exploded. Many thanks to this band for rocking on - What's with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Over all decent but the vocals were mixed way to high so high I was getting a headache. Price of tickets saved the over all experience
Went to see them at Rama. The vocals were awesome. Song choices were great !! I have seen quite a few groups in the past year and honestly have to say these guys were the most entertaining !! Our seats were great. I like that they do not allow alcohol in the venue, it saves a lot of up and down as people either go get booze or are going to the washrooms the whole time, disrupting everyone around them. Over all a great show and highly recommended. Only complaint is near the end of the show the vocals were kind of drowned out by the music, and I'm not sure why.
Great concert and sound and the drummer was amazing not only for his wonderful skill at the drums but for his sheer enthusiasm throughout the entire show. The lead guitar player was super as was the lead singer. I would recomment this for sure.
Classic Grand Funk driven by drummer Don Brewer. Song choices were good, the singing was great and solid bass playing never let up from start to finish. I recommend this act for shear listening and visual enjoyment.
The band was great! Very talented musicians. Enjoyed the musice very much and the classic hits were spot on. The only negative is that I felt the balance in sound was getting off near the end and vocals became a little muddy in mind. I do have a problem with bands that keep expecting me to applaud and such. Perform well and I will show my applause and standing ovation.
What can I say, I've been to many concerts, some not so good, this one excellent, albeit way too short (come on, Rama, at 1.5 hours they are just getting warmed up).
Concert goes down in my books as one of the best ever. Even though only one member remains from the original line up the show rocked the house and we were dancing in the isles.
I thouroughly enjoyed the show, lots of great hits, guitar solo's,amazing drum solo, got the crowd into it,no Mark Farner, but every song was super,Don did a super drum solo and never took a break, quite amazing.5 stars.
Strong vocals by Max Carl, energetic drumming by Don Brewer. Excellent bass playing by Mel Schacher and Bruce Kulick lead guitar extraordinary. They seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as the fans enjoyed them. Only downside was the inclusion of a few lesser known songs such as Bottle Rocket and exclusive of some mainstay songs such as Heartbreaker, Into The Sun, Mean Mistreater, Bad Time. Still a great show.
I have not seen this band since Maple Gardens - October 9th, 1971 and was so happy got to see them again, and ok gotta a few autographs, yeah.
Good price for the preformance. Too bad they only did one encore. Not sure why Mark Farner did not play much guitar other then a little rhythm backup. Maybe it had something to do with his bad back. Don Brewer was fantastic and still had his great sense of percussion. Bruce is definetly a fantastic lead guitarist.
