  • the perfect venue

It seems that churches were built for folk music. The Great Lake Swimmers resonated beautifully in the building. My first time seeing this local group, and hopefully not the last.

  • Swimmers have depth

St. Paul's was the perfect venue for a group like GLS – close, intimate and woodsy. Their collection of songs were finely crafted and performed. So nice to see and hear honest, humble home-towners who truly appreciate their audience. They should win an award at the Junos or at least get honourable mention. Funny how young artists always look the same no matter what the decade. Love them and wish them every success. But not too much as to not ruin their beautiful sound.

GLS are the loveliest band to watch and perfectly matched to the venue. Totally unforgettable.

What a fantastic show. The venue at St. Pauls church was amazing! I wish I could see every act there! The band was also so amazing! Such a powerful and talented group! They should never play any other venue! Tony's voice is so great I had tears in my eyes. I can't wait to see them again!! This really was the best show I've ever seen!

  • Great Lake Swimmers at the Vogue

by Couverpirate on 2010-01-31Vogue Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was generally good, and going to the Great Lake Swimmers gives you exactly what you expect - the show centers its focus on Tony Dekker's vocals and performance. And his unique and haunting voice is certainly worth hearing live. The band played mostly tunes from the new album, which was great to showcase these. One drawback seemed to be the venue's sound system - the band's sound in the Vogue Theatre was fairly unbalanced, and overwhelmed by the bass and the drumset, which made it difficult to hear the acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, fiddle, etc).. A second drawback was that the concert seemed to only take on real life about midway through. Perhaps this is a factor of the kind of music that tends to GLS write, but too many mellow tunes and played in much the same way by all instruments leads to a "sameness" in sound. This was fortunately alleviated mid-set with a solo performance by Dekker, followed by the addition of a guest mandolin player. Overall, a well spent evening and a very enthusiastic crowd, and is a recommendation for anyone who has yet to hear Dekker's voice.

  • amazing canadian folk. FINALLY.

by CELIALB on 2010-01-30Vogue Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

They were humble, sweet and musically remarkable. They didn't waste too much time telling us what all their songs were about, they knew we knew already. They worked together and didn't miss a beat. I would definitely suggest everyone and anyone to see them. The Great Lake Swimmers are Canadian music that should not be hidden from the public eye.

Totally awsome! The Vogue is a great location but with a band like GLS it's really at its best, especially when PACKED to the rafters like it was tonight!
