About

The Grey Cup is the annual Canadian Football League (CFL) championship game. The game have been held nearly every year since its inaugural match in 1909, with exceptions between 1916 and 1918, as well as 2020. The trophy has exchanged hands with many notable recipients, including its Grey Cup-leading, 18-time winner Toronto Argonauts and the CFL’s longest dynasty, the Edmonton Elks, who claimed five consecutive championships between 1978 and 1982. The final, which is accompanied by the week-long Grey Cup Festival celebration, has regularly changed its host city, with Toronto, Vancouver and Hamilton holding the most exhibitions throughout the years. On November 17 2024, the 111th Grey Cup will be played in Vancouver for the 17th time overall, with BC Place set to be the venue for the 10th time.

    Lessons learned

by coachK on 2009-11-30McMahon Stadium - Calgary

I would think the City of Calgary, the folks who run McMahon Stadium and Calgary Transit would have learned some lessons about crowd control and management. Getting to and from your seat at the Grey Cup was ridiculous, no order at all, just a mob scene. Trying to get on the train southbound after the game was another farce, with badly managed crowd control. Don't get me wrong, I thought the Grey Cup and all it's events were great, but come on Calgary get the crowd thing right!!!!!

    Quick Six Sucks

by Looper on 2009-11-30Telus Convention Centre - Calgary

Sold my tickets to a buddy who was totally disappointed at the over charged price of $100 Drinks were over priced at $7 a drink compared to Edmonton's hosp. suite at $5, if they are over charging for drinks you would expect them not to run out of ice/lemons/limes which they did around 10:00 p.m. Sat. night, and it took 15-20 minutes to get a hi ball Sat. night, so once again they should have had more servers for the prices they charged...

Great football atmosphere, but half-time entertainment (Blue Rodeo) had their backs to half the stadium.

    Fantastic Game Bad Seats

    by Jimbo2009 on 2009-11-30McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Loved everything except for the lack of space between rows since only a person 5'3 would have any space in those rows.

    Worst Concert Ever

by Jane on 2009-11-30Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Our tickets had the concert start time as 7:00 p.m. so we rushed down to the Saddledome and sat until roughly 8:10 p.m. Then the announcer from ET Canada came out and spoke for a few minutes and stated we would take a 10 minute break. A 10 minute break I thought, we've sat here for 1 hour and 10 minutes and we are going to take a 10 minute break. Then the Canadian Tenors came out and performed 2 songs. They were enjoyable but not Grey Cup material. Then they left and it took at least 15 to 20 minutes to clear and reset the stage for the next act, some jazz singer. I did not enjoy her as I do not like jazz. Another 15 to 20 wait after she performed. Then Brown came on, she was alright but not my cup of tea. Then another wait for them to clear the stage. Finally some worthy entertainment George Canyon. He was FANTASTIC! He made the night. He is Grey Cup material. I could have listened to him all night. Elisha Cutford came on for a short while and even though she may be a good actress, I don't know, she is not good in front of the mike. Great Big Sea came on and by that time most of the Saddledome was primed and they were all dancing and jumping up and down. Great Big Sea was good but we did not stay for their whole performance as we were wore out by then and just wanted to go home. I would never pay out the money for a concert like that again. The Scotia people had it poorly organized.

    Once you sat, your stuck.

    by stampsgirl2009 on 2009-11-30McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The game itself was fantastic, a truly unforgettable football game. The temporary stands set up in the end zone were disappointing. There were no walkways, it was next to impossible to get to your set, the fans were so tightly packed in there, that once you sat down, you were stuck for the rest of the game. Also, by half time, I was informed by multiple fans that there was no more beer and hamburgers too had been sold out. Blue Rodeo, as much as I love them, played some somber songs and were very hard to hear in the end zone seats, but all other announcements and commentary were crystal clear, except for the announcement of the 50/50 wining number, nobody seated near me knew that the number had been called, and we only found out when the true winner was presented on field. Exiting the stadium was somewhat efficient, seeing as all the Saskatchewan fans left immediately, and everyone else stayed for the ceremony. However, over 5,000 fans were bottle necked at the LRT station. There seemed to be enough staff, but not enough trains. The crowd seemed to be losing patience, and a fire truck and ambulance arrived, fans were not clearing for the emergency crew, and I became uneasy with the atmosphere, so I left and walked south on Crowchild, till I flagged a taxi, police would not let taxi’s stop in front of the stadium, it seemed to be just crowds of people wondering the area with no idea on how to get home.

    Great Big Sea

    by Roken1 on 2009-11-30Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Although the introductory acts were great, the times inbetween stage setup was toooo long! The momentum between sets were definately lost! Great Big Sea was clearly 5 star, but the event was not more than 4 star.

    Great Game

    by raddl2000 on 2009-11-30McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The game had a great ending. The facility at McMahon needs to be updated. Is it time for a new stadium....I think so. The concessions were terribly slow, the menu needs to be updated and washroom facilities need to be upgraded. With that amount of people at the game, the stadium can barely handle it.

    2009 Grey Cup

    by 0a1a0 on 2009-11-30McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Great time, great game, reat atmosphere. Security was very poor, they should have been proactive about removing annoying people. They didn't do anything at all, ever. Multiple isolated individuals made it less enjoyable for many where we were and I had great seats... I live in Calgary and I am dissipointed about this. It would have been a 5 star rating if things were different.

Riderville outshone the rest as expected, shoulder to shoulder Rider fans with no crazy's, just fun, fun, fun.. Tkx to the Rider team and organization for a great performance, Oh yea way to go Montreal :(

Everything was awesome until they ran outta beer at the end of the 3rd quarter, then the Riders blew it, and Calgary needs to get more LRTS from the stadium!! other then that it was a very good time.

    Sound was horrible

by Pong on 2009-11-30Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Great performers! The sound was horrific. I don't know if it was our seats, Section 227 Row 3, or not but the bands was louder than the singers. We couldn't understand Sophie at all.

    Party was great

by bigdog1 on 2009-11-30Telus Convention Centre - Calgary

The 3 day pass was bad as you were given a wrist band. Nobody wants to wear a band for 3 days. Buying the pass was a corporate decision but wasn't transferable. Won't do that again.

    Sound was terrible

by Minimini on 2009-11-30Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

George Canyon was excellent and his sound was a bit better than any of the other acts. I am not a country fan and looked forward to the Divine Brown, but our seats were on the side of the Stage and sound was very distorted for her, the Tenors and the Jazz singer. I would not normally go to a concert at the Saddledome, because of sound quality of my attendance of previous concerts. I am sorry I spent the money to try this, just for the Grey Cup Party...which it wasn't - at least in the stands...
