Half Moon Run on Tour

Since the release of their 2012 debut album, Dark Eyes, Montreal indie-rock quartet Half Moon Run have developed a reputation as one of Canada's most mesmerizing live bands. Not only does the group feature four equally versatile multi-instrumentalists — resulting in copious onstage role-swapping — each member is blessed with an angelic voice that contributes to their spine-tingling, church-worthy harmonies. Half Moon Run are the sort of singular band that possess the wiry intensity to rock a small club, the anthemic grandeur to captivate festival crowds and the sophisticated arrangements to enhance the soft-seater theater experience. And to properly recreate their signature songs in a live setting, the band employ two drum sets, ensuring that each show builds into a heart-racing, percussion-pounding spectacle.

Half Moon Run in Concert

Formed in Montreal in 2010, Half Moon Run quickly sprinted to the frontlines of that city's fabled indie-rock scene. On their arresting debut single, "Full Circle," the group effortlessly forged a sound that was both rustic and grandiose, incorporating the forest-squatting harmonies of Fleet Foxes, the emotional intensity of Bon Iver and the disquieting atmospherics of Radiohead into its widescreen expanse. That song would help propel their first record, 2012's Dark Days, to platinum status in Canada, and into the charts in several European countries. After touring with indie heavyweights like Mumford & Sons, Of Monsters and Men, and City and Colour, the group returned with 2015's Sun Leads Me On, which entered the Top 5 on the Canadian Billboard albums chart, earning them a Juno nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year. (And thanks to anthemic singles like "Turn Your Love," the band also made significant inroads into the U.S., with the album cracking the Top 10 on Billboard Heatseekers chart.) But with their third album, A Blemish in the Great Light, Half Moon Run pivot away from their roots-rock foundation to bring their artier instincts to the fore.

    Awesome as always

by Benoit F on 2023-05-26Théâtre Corona - Montreal

A HMR show is always awesome and this one was no different. It was also special to hear new songs for the first time!

    How is that possible?!?!?!

by CBC on 2023-05-25Théâtre Corona - Montreal

They gave one of the best shows I've ever seen. I don't understand how they managed to be this amazing while remaining a 3 piece band.

    Crowded

by Helen on 2022-07-10L'Olympia - Montreal

The show was nice, but the place was overcrowded and the sound in the back is not as good as close to the scene. The experience was disappointing and we left before the show finished. No more shows at L’Olympia, it seems the quantity is more important than the quality. Money first

    The sound was not good

by Denyse on 2022-07-09L'Olympia - Montreal

The bass and drum sounds were way too loud. We were upstairs at the Olympia... Worst sound ever to a show. I saw the same show in Laval and it was way better.

Good but seems it could have been better

    by m_haley on 2022-07-09L'Olympia - Montreal

The performance seemed to be great, I could tell everyone was into it deeply. But something about the sound kept me from getting fully into the concert. For most songs the kick drum was the loudest thing, I could barely hear Conner’s guitar (or most of what he played). Then at some point in the concert 4-5 violin players came on, I couldn’t hear them practically at all in the mix. I was fairly close to the stage, maybe 10-15 feet. I don’t know if all this is because of where I was placed in the room (maybe too close to the subwoofer) but knowing this band puts on a great live concert, it seemed like much potential for this concert to sound great had been lost. Otherwise the band played great and played a lot of their hit songs and the atmosphere was crazy. Just wish the sound had been better.

Great music, such a talented bunch.

by Loretta on 2022-07-09L'Olympia - Montreal

Great music from these guys, they never fail to deliver. Only comment, lighting takes away from being able to see them and see them play. They are so talented and it would be amazing to see more of how they effortlessly switch up instruments.

    Better than ever

    by ch1909db on 2022-07-08L'Olympia - Montreal

This was one of my favourite concerts of all time, and I've been to many. The sound was on point at Olympia, and more importantly, Half Moon Run were as polished and tight as I've ever heard them. What an amazing show.

    A transcendant experience

by Alex on 2022-07-08L'Olympia - Montreal

I've been a HMR fan for a long time now, and I try to see them whenever they come to Mtl. This show had everything I expected and more. The guys performed incredibly, their stage presence was unbelievable, and they just seemed so stoked to be there. They played a few new songs they've been working on, which was a delight. They also had live violinists (all women!) accompanying them for a few of the songs, which was just so cool! And they did not one, but TWO encores. Who could ask for more? On top of that, the lighting design was phenomenal, it was a visual and audio experience like none other.

    A toe-tapping good time

by Mars on 2020-02-07REBEL - Toronto

The show started later than I thought but the opener was good and I'm glad we didn't miss them. I was surprised by the setlist Half Moon Run chose because it included songs from all three of their albums and not just the singles which I was quite pleased with. They didn't interact with the crowd very much in between songs but they had good energy and they sounded great. I've already recommended their lives shows to others.

    ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!

by Diamond on 2020-02-02REBEL - Toronto

It was my first Half Moon Run concert...and it was the first of many more to come. I will never miss any of their concerts. I discovered the band via the drummer from Last Placid Days of Plenty in the spring of 2019...I listened to all their albums. Love them all!!! But listening to band especially Devon Portielje sing live made me a fan for life!!! The show was Absolutely Amazing!!!

Really great show, bad venue, bored crowd

    by Ian M on 2020-02-02REBEL - Toronto

Half Moon Run puts on a wonderful show! Their energy and enthusiasm are awesome, as is their attention to detail for their lighting and the visual nature of their show! This was a great set, covering almost all the songs my group wanted to hear! Their string quartet was wonderful! As a venue, Rebel is a mixed bag; great sound and lighting are paired with the worst location for a venue in the city, awful parking and hilariously inefficient coat check. Parking at the TNT lot on Cherry street nearby is far better than trying to escape the rammed Polson Street after the show. Rebel's problem is a logistical one, not a quality problem. We had a 45 minute wait for our coats, with only 6-8 people working coat check for a venue of this size. The other problem is Toronto crowds. They are bored and listless, rarely dance, yet still want to crowd the front of the stage. Those with the energy to have a good time get lost in the sea of unenthusiastic people with their hands in their pockets. There were several times where only 50% of the people we could see were clapping or showing appreciation. I'm glad I got to see Half Moon Run again after their awesome show at a smaller venue last year, but every time I go to Rebel I'm a little less likely to go back again.

    Amazing

by Kevkinb on 2020-02-02REBEL - Toronto

I was blown away! They’re one of those bands you need to see live. Singer and guitarist had incredible stage presence, the mood was just right and they nailed every song. Wish I could’ve gone twice

Would have been 5 stars if the venue wasnt garbage

    by Karina G on 2020-02-02REBEL - Toronto

The band was absolutely amazing! However, the venue known as REBEL is not suitable for concerts. The sound quality and acoustics were garbage and the stage is very low so if you’re anywhere from 4’9-5’8 forget about being able to see anything. It’s more of a club and DJ venue, appropriate for dancing and not caring about watching the stage.
