About

Hugh Laurie is nothing if not multitalented. Known for his acting work on the shows Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster, and House, Hugh Laurie is also a skilled writer, director, comedian,  and musician. Laurie began studying piano at the age of six and later took up a range of instruments, including guitar, piano, drums, saxophone, and harmonica. He has shown off his musical abilities during his acting career, particularly on shows such as A Bit of Fry & Laurie and House, as well as during his hosting stint on Saturday Night Live in 2005.
He plays keyboard and sings vocals for Band From TV, a charity-driven rock group based in Los Angeles. He also collaborated with Meat Loaf after the artist appeared with him in an episode of House. After this appearance, Laurie played the piano as a guest artist on Meat Loaf's Hang Cool Teddy Bear album of 2010. He also performed and co-wrote the blues comedy song “Sperm Test in the Morning” for Maybe Baby. While starring in House, Laurie has also weaved in several musical storylines and played a range of classic instruments, including Les Paul and Gibson Flying V guitars. His character also owns a Hammond B-3 organ and plays the introduction to Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum in one episode. Laurie also plays a doctor in Kate Bush's video for the song “Experiment IV.”
Laurie has also recorded his own musical collection and made an album for Warner Bros Records in 2011 called Let Them Talk, which was released in Germany and France, featuring a range of collaborations with artists that included Dr. John, Tom Jones and Irma Thomas. That same year, Laurie closed the Cheltenham Jazz Festival with a jazz quintet to great applause and good reviews. He also talked about his love for jazz and the music of New Orleans in the ITV documentary, Perspectives. He released a second studio album, Didn't It Rain, in 2013. He has released three singles to date: You Don't Know My Mind in 2011, and Winin' Boy Blues and Wild Honey in 2013.

Hugh was funny, held the audience in the palm of his hand. All band members so talented! 1st time I have seen a Vancouver audience so engaged. They were standing / dancing / cheering even for the last half hour. More than 2 hours of fun and pure entertainment!

Hugh Laurie and Copper Bottom Band High Five

by Tuquiwoo on 2014-05-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I want to give it five stars: an Amazing concert because of the variety of instruments being played (trombone, sax, accordion, piano, guitar, bass guitar, clarinet, drums), two female singers with voices which could blow the roof off singing tango and blues; talented musicians , the 3 hour repertoire of 100 year old songs being brought back to life by Hugh Laurie, the man himself in all his glory and energy Great Shame: The sound engineer was asleep, however, and voices got drowned out at times in favour of the instruments; the upright bassist could not be heard; Hugh Laurie's voice did not carry at all. In the end I kept wondering what happened to the sound engineer in all of this?

    Hugh Laurie raised the roof

    by dancing66fool on 2014-05-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

As soon as he walked onto the Orpheum stage, Hugh Laurie was mesmerizing. All the songs were heartfelt and the Copper Bottom Band was superb. Everything from tango to barbershop was featured in Hugh Laurie's (mainly) homage to early American music. With humour and comedic timing, the audience were entertained and fully engaged. We were treated to three encores and this, after a non-stop show of over 2 and a half hours! Encouraged to stand and clap our hands to the beat, we did just that and the feeling was close to a religious experience. We were in the presence of a true talent. All the members of the Copper Bottom Band played their very best in the hands of their leader. An unforgettable evening.

Fabulous tour of old jazz and blues tunes

by PaulBonny on 2014-05-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Hugh Laurie and the band were wonderful. So much variation of music, variety of players and arrangements, and very high quality. Dedication to tunes from the past, emphasis on the classical non-electric instruments (amazing trombone, sax, clarinet, bass, piano), and soaring vocals from Gaby and Jean! Plus Hugh Laurie's enthusiastic and comical stage presence, and his own prowess with the tunes. Only slight negative was that the sound was sometimes a bit muddy at the front of the balcony section.

Hugh and Copper Bottom Band Surpass Expectation

by BethP on 2014-05-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Having only heard Hugh play and sing on a talk show, gave me a sneak peak of what to expect, but I was blown away by Hugh and the Band! The theatre buzzed with excitement as Hugh took us through each song, with humour and grace. Each band member was show cased equally and their crafts shone through their chosen medium(s). We were totally enthralled through the entire show and the two encores. Hugh thanked the audience for taking a leap of faith to be there, but we the audience thank Hugh and the band for bringing those songs back to the forefront - good music stands the test of time. This was good music!

    Hugh Laurie did not disappoint

by monson on 2014-05-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The concert far exceeded my expectations. I use to watch Hugh Laurie in BlackAdder and then House, and did not realize music was his first love. It showed.; His passion for the songs, telling us the history..... all shone through. The band was fantastic. Hugh was funny (funny how you saw traits of Dr. House). If you have the chance, I would highly recommend seeing him. I would absolutely go again.

    Hugh Laurie

by Mowy on 2013-11-01The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

The concert was fantastic from start to finish. Hugh Laurie and his band were phenomenal. The entire group are so talented. I enjoyed myself throughly especially being in such a smaller venue rather than a large one like the Air Canada Centre. If they ever come back in the near future,I would attend. If other artists that I like i.e Elton John were to play at this venue, I would immediately buy tickets.
