  • Excellent show

by Kaylinf on 2013-09-24Pantages Playhouse Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Great show with a lot of new arrangements for classic songs. We also particularly enjoyed his witty banter with the audience. A wonderful performance overall!

  • Iron & Wine was a real treat!!

by Katianna on 2013-09-24Pantages Playhouse Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Not only were we treated to Sam's terrific music, but a feeling of pure enjoyment from listening to and watching the back-up musicians. The horn section really looked like they enjoy performing, and the string section was awesome. That was only my second time at Pantages...great atmosphere!

  • Iron & Wine = Great Show!

You know it's a good concert when the performer sounds the same live as they do on CD. Absolutely phenomenal.

I was disappointed by this show. I am an absolutely incredibly dedicated fan to Iron and Wine, but I couldn't help but be disappointed yet again by their performance. After waiting 2 hours standing in one tight spot waiting for their performance, I had to actually leave to go sit in another room minutes before they came on. And this after waiting an hour for the starting band to come on. This in my opinion was far too long of a wait for the main show... fan's shouldn't have to suffer to try to enjoy a show. Besides the long wait and over crowdedness of the venue, the show was disappointing as Sam's music is known for it's serene, soft, soothing and engulfing music... and his talent was lost in the music as it became a show piece to prove how creative they could get on stage, but the songs ventured way to far from the original. It was hard to tell what song was being played at times (and trust me I know the songs)... the only thing that often stayed true to the original was the lyrics, but those were even sung to a different tune at times. I just wish I could see and hear a live show that emphasizes the perfection of his music, not takes away from it.

  • Good Show. Better Live That On Album

by MoeJedy on 2011-10-17Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Was a good show. These guys need to come out with a live album if this is how they always play live. They added a dark blues kind of sound to many of there songs, while others were played pretty close to how they are on the album. I would see them again, but it would be nice to have VIP's at Sound Academy; the place was packed and a lot of short people didn't have a very good view at all.(I had a good view though I'm 6'1", my girlfriend wasn't so lucky) I was jealous of those who were up in the VIP balcony looking down at us and the band from a seated position. Good show otherwise.

  • Magestic and Fine

by Farabi on 2011-10-17Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

After eagerly standing outside in the cold, blessed with the view of the docks I could only think about just relaxing to the music from the concert. Marketa Irglova opened the night with exceptional music from her debut album as a solo artist. The Czech singer eased the audience with her melancholic voice. Already the acoustics of the Sound Academy were deemed impressive. She had the ability to quiet down the crowd and made us expect more of the calm, soothing yet romantically bitter tune that Iron & Wine could offer. I can speak for the audience by saying that Iron & Wine surprised us with a very electrifying performance with the help of a very jazzy band. It was explosive! Famous tracks from his new album would be re-defined with more flare and energy. All in all, a great night!

  • I miss the old Sam Beam

by Folksygirl on 2011-10-17Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

So it was incredible, and I've finally completed my life goal of seeing Iron and Wine live. A little sad though, because they didn't play the acoustics or most of the old stuff... I'm not too into the jazzy crazy folk experimental instrumental stuff. But overall, Sam Beam is just magical and Market is just incredible. Oh, and what a great live voice.

  • A new direction

by DDKK on 2011-10-17Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

First off, Marketa and her band were sensational. I think the chemistry among those artists was pretty incredible. I'm particularly impressed with the woman who played the Peruvian drum. As a long time fan of Iron & Wine, I have grown very attached to the lilting melodies, haunting harmonies, and aching lyrics. I very much adore his early work for his skills with his guitar. I knew coming into this event that his more recent work had expanded to include broader musical influence. I was really moved by some of the songs that included full percussion and wind section (Side note: the gentleman who played the flute/alto sax/clarinet was definitely having more fun than anyone else in the room). It was actually a pleasant change to feel almost energized by the music rather than lulled to sleep. However, several interludes into a jazz infusion/new age sound, where the winds sounded like elephants and the synthesizer seemed to be playing odd chords, took away from my enjoyment. Overall, I was very please with the concert, and I am also glad I now know that this venue does not have any kind of seating.

Great band, fabulous set, terrible venue. Could have done without the backup singers for every song.

  • Good bands, bad crowd

by Curt on 2011-10-17Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

This is the second time I've seen Iron & Wine perform, and the band did a fantastic job. However, my experience was essentially ruined by an audience that would simply not stop talking for the entirety of the set. It's a shame, too, because it would have been an otherwise fantastic show. I think Sam Beam had similar feelings as he only played a single song for the encore, which is definitely not the usual case.

  • Epic

by sophino on 2011-10-15Olympia - MontrealRating: 4 out of 5

All in all, the performance was amazing! The show featured a full 10-man band with trumpets, saxophones, clarinets and even tambourines. And because of the added musicians, every song felt new and, certainly, jazzier. I personally would have loved to hear more of the original acoustic versions. I feel that most of Sam Beam's fan base was built on his slow, acoustic folk sound. I am sure more than a few fans were a little disappointed with all of these very upbeat songs.

  • Sam Beem is wonderful.

Just Sam Beem and his guitar. It was amazing. Hopefully I get to see the full band one day.
