The singing in this show was amazing - I used to watch Ted Neeley in the original movie and to this day he is an amazing actor and singer! Judas had wonderful voice as too Mary Magdalain two other favorites! So Glad I came to see this show!

    Jesus Christ was great

by kido on 2010-01-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Excellent show. The actor playing Jesus could have been younger, but had an excellent range of voice, was a little weak at times.

Jesus Christ Superstar - Calgary - Dec 31/09

by golfinglucy on 2010-01-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Ted Neely and the Calgary cast was outstanding. Mr. Neely shows passion in a role he obviously has embrassed over his career. Definitely still hits the notes!

    Ted Neeley's Resurrection

by OldFred on 2010-01-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Like most of my age group [Boomer] I suspect I was drawn to this show for the novelty of seeing Ted Neeley reprising the role he made famous in the motion picture version of this Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice classic. Unfortunately for myself and my two companions it was only the novelty aspect that was satisfied. Neeley can still hit some of the screeching high notes that distinguished his cinematic performance, but at age 66 in my opinion he is both visually and physically too old for the title role. This age discrepancy was accentuated for us by what seemed to be an exceedingly young cast - that contrast made Neeley's age issue more painfully apparent. Many cast members were quite talented especially in the key roles of Judas and Mary Magdelene, but for me the youth and exuberance gave the production more the feel of 'High School Musical' than a Lloyd Webber standard. Review of the playbill confirmed that for many in the ensemble cast this was their first major performance and it occasionally showed in the 'effort versus skill' balance.. Overall not a bad way to spend a New Years Eve, but we all suspected that after the physical and vocal exertion required that Mr. Neeley was likely in bed long before midnight. A nice effort that fell well short.

Sorry Ted, may be I'm getting old but I really don't remember the shrill voice (singing) Everyone else did a galant job...I,m glad we went, it brought back great memories of working on the other side of the stage in this production.

JCS was okay, but lacking the emotion

by JCFAN999 on 2010-01-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I first saw the movie 30 years ago and Ted Neeleys performance was impressive to say the least. I saw the play live 10 years ago and was equally impressed. This performance lacked the emotion and certainly the range in Ted Neeleys voice has changed considerably. Of course he is 30 years older. But at the end of the day, the paying customer has to feel like they got their moneys worth. And in this case, sadly, I didn't feel that way. There was nothing horribly wrong with it, it just wasn't memorable like the first two. The supporting cast was weak in comparison to the original movie and the first live play of 10 years ago that I saw.

Jesus Christ Superstar ROCKED the house!

by Jonahsmom on 2010-01-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Seeing Jesus Christ Superstar on New Years eve was great enough - seeing and hearing it performed so well made it the best value for any dollar I spent in 2009! From the beautiful voice of the woman who played Mary Magdalene, to Judas who quite possibly is one of the best male voices I've heard in a very long time, to Ted Neeley blowing us all away by still being able to hit those high notes, it was an amazing experience from start to finish! My arms are aching from clapping so hard, and my face hurts from a smile that lasted the whole 2 hours!

    Jesus Christ Superstar

by inlimbo1 on 2010-01-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Jesus Christ Superstar was even better than the movie and we saw the movie about 6 times. Ted Neeley plays his part spendidly and hasn't changed in all the years since the movie was made. He has an extreme voice and it too is also as good as it was back in the 70s. We totally enjoyed the stage play as much as the movie and would recommend it to everyone!!! Fabulous show!!!!!

Jesus Christ Superstar was a Superstar

by ReginaFanFamily on 2010-01-01TCU Place - Saskatoon

Unforgettable!!! Ted Neely's vocals were stronger, better and more intense than anyone could have believed! We were all on the edge of our seats, watching and listening to "The Voice" that we've all heard over the decades on the JCS vinyl albums, video tape and CDs and now DVDs. Incredible talent and what a performance which we all will remember always!!

This was the second time seeing "Jesus Christ Superstar". As always, Ted Neeley was superb, but this cast I think was marvelous. The casting, lighting music were all superb.

    Mediocre at best

by Theatre123 on 2010-01-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Fair production, felt like leaving half way through. Music and vocals left a lot to be desired - acting felt robotic

by CindyB on 2009-12-31TCU Place - Saskatoon

Ted Neeley has an absolutely amazing voice, and his was only the beginning! Such a talented cast, the chorus was incredible, and the other key players didn't disappoint. Would go again in a heartbeat!

We had front row seats for this performance - and it was incredible. Words can't describe the satisfaction with the complete show. Had it been playing here again the next day, I would have been there again! Bravo!

    by momdcmh4 on 2009-12-31TCU Place - Saskatoon

You can tell not much about it has changed since it first debuted in the 70's. Especially Ted Neeley in the role as "Jesus Christ"! Perhaps if the person playing the role of JC has been playing it longer than Christ was alive, it'stime for a change in personnel. Updating the vocal stylings wouldn't hurt. Men straining to screech out the "high notes" is not very attractive in this millenium. The very minimal staging and costumes were superb and the lighting made the show.

    Jesus Christ Superstar remains incredible!!

by Tiedyed on 2009-12-31TCU Place - Saskatoon

Ted NEELEY still has the power in his voice to send shivers up one's spine. The performance by the cast was very strong and their efforts made this a very enjoyable show.
