Joan Jett still packs plenty of punch
by tarryrob on 2011-10-20MTS Centre - Winnipeg, MBJoan Jett saddled into Winnipeg, bringing her sassy brand of rock n’roll to the MTS Centre. Riding a wave of renewed interest, thanks to the popularity of the biopic “The Runaways,” a flick about her former all female band, the singer-guitarist kicked off her 50 minute set (09/8/10) with the title track from her debut album “Bad Reputation.” Looking youthful, lean, and mean, despite having passed the 5 decade mark in age, Jett, attired in signature black, still has the pipes, the chops and the attitude that earned her the title “Queen of Rock N’ Roll.” Backed by the latest version of her longtime band The Blackhearts, the veteran rocker continued to embrace her roots, serving up a version of The Runaway’s most famous song, the sleazy “Cherry Bomb.” With a stage that was as stripped down as her music, Jet next dusted off the title soundtrack to “Light of Day,” a 1987 movie in which she co-starred with Canuck TV and movie star Michael J. Fox, followed by another tip of the hat to her former female quintet, a swaggering cover of the Gary Glitter hit also used in “The Runaways” movie, “Do You Wanna Touch Me.” A cover of Sweets “A.C.D.C” from Jett’s 9th studio album “Sinner” was followed by the Jett penned “You Drive Me Wild,” 2nd track from the “The Runaways” 1976 debut album. She then pulled the 1st of a trio of tracks from her 2nd studio album (the 1st with The Blackhearts), the whipcracking “Love is Pain” from, 1981s “I Love Rock n’ Roll,” which preceded “Fake Friends,” the lead single from her 3rd studio album. The homestretch featured another Jett penned Runaways’ track “School Days,” followed by her best known song, the 1981 rock anthem “I Love Rock n’ Roll,” which had the crowd pumping their fists in the air. Set closers included her hit cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’ “Crimson and Clover” and the 1988 top 10 hit “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” leaving the audience screaming for more, and giving headliners Aerosmith a hard run for their money.
