About

JOE SATRIANI IN CONCERT:

Joe Satriani’s virtuoso guitar playing is more than just flawless technique and blistering speed -- he also forms an emotional connection with fans that is beyond words. His genuine love of riff-based rock ensures that audiences are in for a sonic thrill ride at his live shows, where his nimble fingers and finely tuned ear bring his ballads to life. While “Satch” (as friends and fans refer to him) turns melodies inside out and shreds up a storm, his cast of astounding supporting musicians keeps the grooves solidly rocking throughout six-string stunners like “Surfing with the Alien”, “Satch Boogie”, and “Flying in a Blue Dream”.  Ticket buyers are in for a transcendent instrumental experience that can't be beat, featuring a brilliant musician in impeccable form.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The highest-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time, Joe Satriani was born in Westbury, NY in 1956. Before he gained fame, Satch made a living teaching some of the most influential guitarists of the ‘80s, including Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Steve Vai (David Lee Roth), and Larry LaLonde (Primus). His solo career took off with the hits “Always with Me, Always with You” and “Satch Boogie” off his 1987 album Surfing with the Alien. He kept his hot streak alive with his next two albums Flying in a Blue Dream (1988) and The Extremist (1992), which both went gold. In 1996 Satriani started the G3 Tour with friends Steve Vai and Eric Johnson to bring instrumental guitar music to the masses. In 2008 Satch joined forces with former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar (vocals), Michael Anthony (bass), and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to create the supergroup Chickenfoot. While those projects keep him crazy busy, Satriani still continues to tour and record as a solo artist, releasing Unstoppable Momentum in 2013.

    Return to the normal normal

by Zaz on 2022-11-01The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

An evening with Joe has always been magical! This recent show, the first in Toronto post pandemic, was a return to the normal Satch fans are used to. Great show, great band, great chemistry on stage, and same old wonderful GTA crowd. Thank you Joe, all the best, and see you soon.

Sounded so bad we left at the intermission…

by Roch on 2022-11-01The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

It was my fourth time seeing Satriani live and prior to last Saturday, had never been disappointed. But this time around, the sound was just awful. Not sure if it was the venue, the sound engineer, the musicians, or a mix of all the above? But I could hardly distinguish Joe’s virtuoso guitar playing, amongst the noise and distortion. I could go on, but in a nutshell, a show to forget. That said, I will still try to catch my favourite guitarist next time he’s around.

Satriani - Amazing, despite the volume.

by Anonymous on 2018-06-07Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

An amazing performance despite the sound engineering. The volume was far too loud for the size of the venue, which spoiled the overall effect of the concert and took away from Joe's amazing guitar technique and performance. We were also frustrated that the information that came with the on-line purchase made it appear that the show was starting at 8, and we arrived an hour early to pick up our tickets and get seated and have dinner. As it turned out, the doors didn't open until 8 and the show didn't start until 9. It was very misleading and lead to a frustrating experience right from the start.

Joe Satriani is one of a kind. He plays with enthusiasm and doesn’t miss a beat. The energy he omits is amazing and tranquil. His fingers are machine driven so the music was perfect... It made my heart smile!!!

    Joe Satriani. A milestone achieved.

by Gealmaor on 2018-06-04Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I waited almost 20 years to see Joe Satriani live, so I would totally go again and experience a show like this. The only negative review would be regarding the seating and the acoustics of the venue (something very important because it was a music concert) It would have been nice a more theatrical venue in order to enjoy the show more comfortably. And regarding the acoustics, at some point I needed to move to the back of the crowd because the low frequencies’ feedback was too loud and overwhelmed some of the middle and high ranges. Nothing truly major, but for a music lover that was important.

    Set your expectations

    by GuitarFan111 on 2018-05-28MTELUS - Montreal

This was my 5th time seeing Joe in over 12 years or so. With him, I find it's a bit of a hit or miss depending on what you're looking for. It's not a 'typical' concert, and I'll explain that below, so make sure this is exactly what you want. 1. The show was for 8pm, and Joe was on stage, performing at 8:00PM! No openers, stage and sound check already done, the show (after the encore) was done by 10:05PM. Don't show up an hour after the time on your ticket, expecting him to just be setting up the stage as you'll miss half the show. 2. Setlist: I'd consider myself to be a big Satch fan. I have a good 40-50 of his songs on my playlist at any given time. He played maybe 3 or 4 of those. It was an album tour, but even then he only played 3-4 songs of the new album. The rest were rare songs ranging from unpopular to unheard of. If you expect him to play the fan favorites or at least a good number of them, you may be disappointed. I say "may" because in some of his other shows I've been to, he has played fan favorites. It's been 50/50 in my experience. I've been to shows where half the audience walked out before the show was over. I was a bit disappointed myself not because I'm against hearing new/different/unpopular songs. But they frankly weren't that good. Nowhere close to his level - many lacked melody, buildup, highs and lows, climaxes. He could have been improvising the entire set for all I know, and I'm a trained musician with good familiarity with music theory, and Satch's style overall. 3. Bring Ear Plugs: I'm not an old man, and I go to rock/metal shows regularly. While you probably should wear ear plugs at most concerts, Satch is the only one I'd say that this is a must. His highs are set REALLY (and I mean at an eardrum-piercing level) high, probably in order to catch all of his pinch harmonics. 4. Improvisation/jamming: Usually, you get a lot of drum solos, bass solos, and the band just jamming together on the spot at a very high level which is great. Again, this is a hit or miss with Satch. I've been to shows where they've killed it. This last time, they just had a drum solo and a bit of back and forth between the guitars. 5. It seemed like work. Between the extremely early start/end times, minimal talk with the crowd between songs, little to no jamming, and the setlist, it seemed like he did not want to be there and it was just another day at the office for him counting down the minutes until he's done. It shows, and it rubs off on the rest of the band and the crowd. It happens with every artist though.
