    John Cleese Perfunctory Performance

by JohnnyCanuck1953 on 2018-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It is obvious that Mr. Cleese has done this show many times before and is getting tired of it. The first part of the show is a diatribe on why stupid people run the world, the key you see, is that they don't know they are stupid. The second part was a question and answer period with questions from a moderator and the audience. The answers seemed to be stored responses that could be made to fit any question. There were a few funny lines, but not many. He suggested that Canada was a pretty good country with nothing wrong with it that could not be cured by towing it 1500 miles south. The show ended promply and exactly at the 90 minute mark and I am sure that Mr. Cleese was soon on his way back to warmer climes. It was an expensive show, I was very disappointed. I hoped for some caustic observations of the Canadian scene and a few biting witticisms on our neighbours to the south but there was nothing topical.

    john Cleese

by Grogger on 2018-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Do not waste your money. I paid 130.00 for a seat to listen to him speak for not quite an hour (and that included the introduction) and a question period that consisted of 5 questions. We were out in an hour and 20 minutes. He was not very witty or funny and actually quite boring. Everyone was fiddling and bored. Completely disappointing and would NEVER see him again, Just a money making tour with little witticisms or insight.

    a bit short

by Denvail on 2018-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Although very intelligent and bright, the event fell a little short of expectations. I don't feel we got our money's worth

    That was delightfully unusual

by Sharkbyte on 2018-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Guess what, it's not really a comedy tour. John opens his show at a podium and gives an insightful rant about society, Trump (enough already), oddities and the fruitlessness of society's future. Concise, precise, clever and full of Cleese's biting wit but not a comedy sketch at all. After 30 minutes we're all sat down for a Q&A with John Cleese, moderated by a Boom 99.7 radio host who appeared to have never interviewed a sole in his career. Was it a pleasant evening, yes. Was it classic Cleese, not really. As with so many aging stars it's the memoir and money tour, just like Carol Burnett's stop in Ottawa. Would I go having known this? No. The only blessing was the tickets were half price and the seats were wonderful. NAC's microphones failed as usual but fortunately a backup plan was in place. NAC just can't get that sound thing done right. It's either painfully distorted or woefully mixed. One tone-deaf tech at the helm.

All he is cracked up to be

by Johnsnextwife on 2018-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

John Cleese did not disappoint. Only complaints I have are the host sucked (only took questions from a small audience section) and the show could have been longer.

Great to see an old friend!

by FairwayPhil on 2018-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Still one of the funniest men of British comedy. New material works fine but most people, I think, would prefer the old familiar stuff. Would also work better if he had one or two of the other original Monty Python or Fawlty Towers players with him. In any case a rare opportunity to see true comedy - hard to find them like that anymore!

John's pace of delivery was impeccable. He has a unique combination of silliness and sagacity. We loved every minute of the show.

Underwhelming. Attended the last show and thoroughly enjoyed it. But this one really did not impress. The Q&A period was the worst .

    Hopeless was a great show.

by Anonymous on 2018-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

John Cleese was wonderful. His wit is classic. His brilliance in Faulty Towers has brought joy and hilarity to two generations of my family and the series is a ‘go to’ remedy when we need a good laugh. Thank you John! The show’s host was disappointing however. He appeared unprepared and lacking in knowledge about Mr. Cleese. I felt he poorly represented Ottawa and was not of the caliber deserving of John Cleese.

This man is the funniest man on the planet. Dry wit, delivered perfectly, this was a bucket list event for me.

He didn’t look like he wanted to be there. His clothes were wrinkled, hair disheveled... there were some very good moments, but not enough. And the radio guy who asked questions didn’t seem to know who Cleese was. Not an effective MC.

by Bin905 on 2018-04-08Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land - Sugar Land

I paid to watch The Holy Grail from a marginal seat, and then see John C complain about being in the movie. He’s bitter and not interesting.

A Special Night With Two Living Legends of Comedy

by ComedyAficionado on 2016-10-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

There are probably tons of reviews about this event, whether locally in Vancouver or elsewhere. All that needs to be said is that for anyone who is a Monty Python fan; is addicted to Fawlty Towers episodes; loves A Fish Called Wanda; or is simply smitten with John Cleese and/or Eric Idle, this is like a gift from the Gods. No doubt the show is choreographed as a boilerplate performance that gets hashed and rehashed at each venue, but that didn't detract from its entertainment value which provided a plethora of laughs throughout the night, and there were more than enough spontaneous improvisational moments with audience members to make it feel intimate. In fact, that word sum it up best: if you tuned out the audience it was like you, and you alone were hanging out together, listening to them share favourites anecdotes/scenes from their various productions, and basking in every minute of it. Damn... they're funny. I haven't laughed that hard or often in ages.

Cheese and Idle: Silly as Ever

by Hangfire on 2016-10-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

A very funny and well thought out mix of skits (both live and screened), songs, and anecdotes that are enjoyable for all ages. My seventeen year old daughter literally laughed and cried. I highly recommend this show.

    John Cleese a little disappointed

by K1960 on 2016-10-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I'm a huge fan of John Cleese and I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the show. It could've been my expectations as I was expecting more comedy routines and what I got was John & Eric reminiscing on how they got started to where they are now. I was more impressed with Eric Idle's routines in the show.

Cleese and Idle still have it

by pandora5150 on 2016-10-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Thoroughly enjoyable night. Not a rabid Monty fan but the whole history was interesting, entertaining and very funny. The two seemed very comfortable with each other and seemed to be having a good time.

The interaction between the two was fabulous. The skits were hilarious and I thoroughly enjoyed the singing and the old show clips.
