About

John Mayer is a man of contradictions. He’s an international pop star, but also an authentic bluesman endorsed by some of the genre’s biggest legends (B.B. King, Eric Clapton). He's famous for dating some of the entertainment industry's most beautiful women, but dislikes the red carpet and lives on a ranch in Montana.  Mayer is known for his hushed-acoustic sound, but has collaborated with hip-hop giants Kanye West, Common, and Frank Ocean. Among the contradictions, however, exists a through line: Mayer’s prowess as a singer-songwriter and guitarist has remained a constant, earning him 7 Grammys and over 20 million album sales worldwide.  After a series of granuloma-related throat surgeries forced him to take a complete vocal break in 2012, Mayer is fully recovered and back on tour in 2013 –  fans can catch him LIVE in concert in support of his sixth studio album Paradise Valley, named after the site of his new Montana home.

Throughout his career, Mayer’s high profile romances have been fodder for both the tabloids and his songwriting.  Adding to speculation over his relationships, lead single “Paper Doll” from Paradise Valley is rumored to be about former flame Taylor Swift, who gave Mayer a piece of her mind in 2010 with her song “Dear John.” In a head-scratching move, the ever-sarcastic Mayer capitalized on one of the year’s biggest internet memes by enlisting the Prancercise lady (Joanna Rohrback) as the star of the official “Paper Doll” music video, keeping fans guessing as to the true meaning of the song.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Mayer took up the guitar at 13, inspired by the music of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Michael J. Fox’s epic guitar performance as Marty McFly in Back to the Future.  After briefly attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Mayer dropped out to pursue his passion, and quickly attracted the attention of label execs with a March 2000 appearance at South By Southwest.  His official 2001 debut Room For Squares went multi-platinum, and earned him his first Grammy – Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Your Body Is a Wonderland.”  Mayer followed up in 2003 with Heavier Things, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned him two more Grammys, including Song of the Year for “Daughters.” 2006’s Continuum, Mayer’s third album, highlighted his blues sensibilities and landed him another Grammy, this time for Best Pop Vocal Album.

    The best!

by Caseyzy on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

John Mayer is a consummate artist who totally "let it all hang out!" The venue could benefit from a incline to the stage or something to help us shorter folks but I was standing in the middle and felt I caught some really awesome glimpses of him through my own eyes - not through a jumbotron! I just wish he would have talked a bit more and played less of his radio "hits."

John Mayer never ceases to amaze

by macqueens on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

John Mayer was at his best - again. His musical skills are unparalleled and his presence on stage is phenomenal. He truly makes me happy every time I hear his voice and feel his music. I love watching him with the band especially... they play off of one another and it adds a nice touch to the show. I was about 3 people from the stage and he just looked like he was enjoying himself, which made me enjoy his performance even more. If you ever have a chance to go see this man play live, please do. Although I am a big fan of his studio albums, the stage is where he shines brightest and you don't know John Mayer until you have seen him play live. Words cannot describe. True love. Canada loves you John! (The muscian more than the tabloid headline)

Mayer was good but long wait was a downer

by nickles on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

When Mayer finally got on stage he was great, but the crowd had been waiting for so long! 2 people fainted while waiting because it was so stuffy and packed you couldn't even lift an arm. It didn't look as though there were any tech problems, but Mayer didn't give a reason as to why he made us wait. Overall, Mayer rocked the concert but it would have been better if the crowd didn't have to wait for so long...should have had an opener band...

    Gravity

by Fromwithin on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

In general the concert was pretty good. I thought he was a bit lazy on the guitar work. That being said his solo in Gravity was the highlight of the night for me. After watching the DVD Where the Light Is, I was expecting to see more similar guitar work. The concert was only about an hour and a half, a little bit short considering tickets were just under $100. Sound was excellent.

John was great, but the venue was awful

by BrentM on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

John's set was excellent, and his band sounded incredible. So nice to see Steve Jordan back on the stage with him. Overall, I was really happy with how the new songs sounded and the performance. The venue really disappointed me. I have been to several shows at the Sound Academy, but I don't really feel like it works for a John Mayer show. Massey Hall or some other smaller theater with a similar capacity would have been much better. Also, parking at the venue is awful. It took an hour to get down the street and into the lot. I feel bad for anyone that didn't leave a little early... I can't imagine how long it would have taken to get out of there. Overall, I think that I wasted a few hundred dollars... which really sucks... but what can ya do. You can't win them all. The ticket price was far too high for the quality of the overall experience.

John Mayer gave it all up to toronto

John Mayer gave us his all and put on a great show. The venue left something to be desired though, not enough exits. But Wow John was amazing.

    John Mayer...Incredible

by AngieA on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

Although he started the show at almost 9 (show was set to start at 7:30), he was still incredible. This was my third JM concert and I will probably attend several more. He is absolutely incredible live!

Really great show, but I wish he had played more off the new CD! Also, I wish there was a better chance to get autographs. The general admission thing was a bit annoying because it was really hot and you couldn't move and therefore couldn't see sometimes. Overall, really great and John looked/sounded amazing!

Great but it could even have been better.

by boubeurd on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

John Mayer was great, it's the first time I got to see him because he never came to France, EVER. I think this concert was the perfect example of a John Mayer concert, there was a perfect blend of old and new songs, a good preview of the new album for those of us who didn't get to listen to it yet. I'm pretty satisfied because he sang my fave song Why Georgia. What I think is unfortunate is the way the songs were played. There were no or too little variations from the songs in the albums and I think to keep an audience interested you have to make up new arrangements sometimes... And I would like to mention the Sound Academy, which is almost club-size, but with perfect acoustics. I could hear everything and I'm sure if I had recorded anything it wouldn't even sound bootleg-y...

    John Mayer - Sound Academy

    by bick0509 on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

Second time seeing John Mayer, never disappoints. A true musician and a pleasure to listen to anytime. Very laid back and interactive. Sound Academy is a good venue, but standing in a sardine box for three and a half hours is less than ideal. Having said that, I love the intimate setting and being close to the stage/performer.

    JM: definitely lovers

by Karren on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

The show was amazing as usual. The venue set up could have been better or a better venue could have been chosen. As usual, the fans sucked. Although I'm glad it was a 19+ show, I could have done without the drooling girls and people yelling stuff at him the entire show. Appreciate the music, appreciate the talent, consider others.

    Tecumseh!

by Toddler on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

John put on a good show. I thought with the cameras, he might be a bit more talkative but all and all it was a solid set. I think his version of Crossroads is awesome.I was hoping to here Assassin, but no go.

    Mayer was amazing!

by keldreamer on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

Mayer as always performed to his usual high standards - great jams, and loved the new album. His voice seems to get better with age - very impressive.
