About

John Mayer is a man of contradictions. He’s an international pop star, but also an authentic bluesman endorsed by some of the genre’s biggest legends (B.B. King, Eric Clapton). He's famous for dating some of the entertainment industry's most beautiful women, but dislikes the red carpet and lives on a ranch in Montana.  Mayer is known for his hushed-acoustic sound, but has collaborated with hip-hop giants Kanye West, Common, and Frank Ocean. Among the contradictions, however, exists a through line: Mayer’s prowess as a singer-songwriter and guitarist has remained a constant, earning him 7 Grammys and over 20 million album sales worldwide.  After a series of granuloma-related throat surgeries forced him to take a complete vocal break in 2012, Mayer is fully recovered and back on tour in 2013 –  fans can catch him LIVE in concert in support of his sixth studio album Paradise Valley, named after the site of his new Montana home.

Throughout his career, Mayer’s high profile romances have been fodder for both the tabloids and his songwriting.  Adding to speculation over his relationships, lead single “Paper Doll” from Paradise Valley is rumored to be about former flame Taylor Swift, who gave Mayer a piece of her mind in 2010 with her song “Dear John.” In a head-scratching move, the ever-sarcastic Mayer capitalized on one of the year’s biggest internet memes by enlisting the Prancercise lady (Joanna Rohrback) as the star of the official “Paper Doll” music video, keeping fans guessing as to the true meaning of the song.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Mayer took up the guitar at 13, inspired by the music of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Michael J. Fox’s epic guitar performance as Marty McFly in Back to the Future.  After briefly attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Mayer dropped out to pursue his passion, and quickly attracted the attention of label execs with a March 2000 appearance at South By Southwest.  His official 2001 debut Room For Squares went multi-platinum, and earned him his first Grammy – Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Your Body Is a Wonderland.”  Mayer followed up in 2003 with Heavier Things, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned him two more Grammys, including Song of the Year for “Daughters.” 2006’s Continuum, Mayer’s third album, highlighted his blues sensibilities and landed him another Grammy, this time for Best Pop Vocal Album.

    relief for an aching body.....

by bigdurango on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

Since Sound Academy is general admission, we were expecting to wait in line for a couple hours, which eventually turned into 3 before JM walked on stage. All the aches and pains of standing around for 3 hours quickly faded away with his opening "Heartbreak Warfare". Typically, the evening was filled with impromptu guitar solos and extended jam sessions with Steve Jordan, including an unreal tantrum during "Gravity". All in all, the 3 hour wait was well worth the 105 minutes of JM mastery.

    Great concert but......

    by ryan79 on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

The small crowd and acoustics of the sound academy were great and John Mayer certainly delivered but at close to $90 per ticket I still found myself trying to find the full value of the ticket. I've been to cheaper concerts were the artist played longer than two hours and had a better time. It was a great concert but not worth the ticket price.

    Amazing

by TayM on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

John Mayer always puts on an amazing show. I loved all the extra time he spent jamming. However, this venue sucks! (Sound academy). Its hot and you cant bring water in, and it was like a stampede coming in and out. If it hadn't been John Mayer, I'd have left

    Unreal

by Sleeve on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

Band was incredible, John was spot on. FOH guy was doing something right, steve jordan's drum sounds were off the chain, as was johns guitar tones. My only beef is General admission shows. Seems like they crank the heat and delay the start time. But the arena tour in Feb. will eliminate that. Overall, show was amazing.

    Too little, too late!

by CarrieB on 2009-11-25Sound Academy - Toronto

While I still love John Mayer's music, I don't think I'll be attending any more concerts. First of all, the concert at the Sound Academy last night was not for the fans, it was for a television show. The whole set up was horrible. We waited in line for over 30 minutes to get in and once in there, we waited, wall to wall people, for over an hour for him to come on. I suppose the camera angles weren't correct or something. Once he did start playing it only lasted for just over an hour. What a disappointment. For the $90.00 ticket price, I expected more and so did many other people that I spoke to.

The venue was really good for " An Evening With John Mayer". Thought the performance was really good of new mixed with old favorites. Overall great time and looking forward to the next time I can see John Live!

I would have hoped that he would have played a few more of his older songs. He was wonderful to see live but was there really a reason that he delayed so long to begin as there was no opening act??? I guess he probably had a seat somewhere to relax in while we waited!!
