    Must see John Prine

by onnaday on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

What can I say. This is the third time we have seen him. One word, fantastic. He hasn't lost any of the qualities that he had over thirty years ago even though he has had some medical issues. The audience loved him....definately a love fest and nice to see so callled staid ottawa fans relaxing anfd enjoying themselves. Can't wait till he comes Back!!!

    Prine Shines Again

by GrayF on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

John Prine put on another great show with a mixture of old and new tunes. His story telling through his song writing and delivery always provides the value that I am looking for in a concert. I have followed Prine's career and though we are both a little bit older he never slows down or cheats his audience. His rustic tones and haunting lyrics make a John Prine concert a must see whenever possible.

by JD2197 on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

John Prine is as good an entertainer as there is and once again he proved his style spans all age groups. People from there early 20's to late 70's stood and cheered for more long befoe he even thought about walking off the stage. His musice is timeless and his writing and performing is heartfelt and sincere. John Prine is .................well John Prine ! Bravo !

    PRINE WAS PRIME!!!

by earthgoddess on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

John proves once again that he is an unforgetable storyteller. One I enjoyed in my teens and still enjoy 30 years later! He is an amazing guitar player and his two bandmates were great too. Nostalgia at it's best!!!!!!!!!!

    John Prine - Ottawa

by Bilbo on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

For those of us who are old enough to have walked some of the same roads of life's up's and downs, Prine's ability to paint a familiar scene with words that brings you into the song's imagery, leaves no doubt he can still weave a tapestry that allows you to make the songs have personal value. Great interaction, storytelling, lively crowd, mostly east-coasters I suspect, where Prine has had a loyal following since the 70's. Carrie Rodriguez as the opening act was awesome, hope to hear more of her.

by Thirdrowcenter on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Pretty clear from the moment John Prine walked out onto the stage that it was a special night. Standing ovation and smiles all around. The night was first class.Prine's sidemen played crisp and tasteful notes to match their suits. All the favourites and more with a genuine feeling of attachment between Prine and the audience and vice versa. Thanks John, hurry back.

    Prine Still In HIs Prime

by Gosby on 2009-08-16Massey Hall - Toronto

John Prine played to a full house of enthusiastic fans at Massey Hall last Friday night, and he did not disappoint. The hair is a silver-grey and the physique somewhat portly, but the voice and the self-deprecating humour still bring to life his far-ranging, unique and timeless lyrics that span four decades. Talk about a journey down memory lane, from the Vietnam War ("Sam Stone") to now, from Mr. Murphy's coal train ("Paradise") to the particulars of touching human foibles and true love ("Dear Abby" and "In Spite of Ourselves") ... not to mention each fan's poignant recollection of how old you were and what you were doing when a particular John Prine song became a part of your life. Special mention should also be made of John's two fine accompanists, one on bass and the other on electric guitar and mandolin. What a treat!

    John Prine was fantastic

by Prinefan on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Prine was comfortable and funny on stage. His band was tight and supported him well. His song list leaned more on his earlier work but he could have played for hours based just on the requests. There were a few songs I had hoped to hear but didn't - I guess I'll have to go to another show.

    Fantastic as always.

by bobgeneeric on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

This is the third time I have seen John Prine and as always he was awsome. The venue was great and as we were there early we heard some of the rehearsal. He has a million songs and all favorites....no way he could play them all. First time I have heard him perform "in spit of our selves" and it was great....loved it all and can't wait for the next one!

    An American Legend

by Cindymac on 2009-08-16National Arts Centre - Ottawa

What can I possible say that would do justice to this performance. John Prine is a troubadour...in the days of old he would have been a bard. He is a story teller, a songwriter, and god forbid a rural poet...a medicine man for the soul. A man that witnesses every day life as a story to be told with a truthfulness that reaches out to any one of us...he personifies the tragic comedy of life itself. His performance last nite was true to form...nothing lost from years gone buy...in fact, perhaps even stronger as he holds on to the years ahead with such strength and conviction. He enjoys his venue as much as the audience and has not lost one iota of his ability to make us laugh and cry all at the same time. He offers up his gratitude and appreciation for his fellow band members as though they were family that he is proud of. The tunes are still playing in my head. I woke up this morning...did not hit my head upon the floor and die but was revived with last nites journey to the centre of John Prine's world. This obviously is not a technical review...however, the sound, vocals and performance were top form. I will carry this one with me and will be proud to say..."I saw John Prine in concert...he was second to none!".

What a humble man he is! Could not believe his talent. The guitar playing was phenomenal to say the least.

    John Prine - Comfortable

by Chippy on 2009-08-15Massey Hall - Toronto

John Prine seemed more comfortable with himself than when he was younger. (I have seen him on numerous occasions, including with Steve Goodman) He enjoyed his audience, accepted people throwing out song titles at him. "I know them well." I did not think it was acceptable to holler out song titles to him, and I did not accept the cheers of some audience members when he sang about "there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes". Did they not understand the tragedy/sadness of post traumatic stress disorder/drug abuse? He was charming, and a gentleman.

john prine was AMAZING! MASSY HALL SUCKED!!

by jenine on 2009-08-15Massey Hall - Toronto

This singer is by far my favorite artist! John Prine put on the best concert I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of shows over the years! The only complaint I have was the people working the venue said me and my 7 year old daughter where having fun at the expense of everyone else, because we wanted to sing and dance! I think the people at the show forgot that when they got into John Prine back in the 70's...they where young like me once and probably had the same kind of zest for his shows as my daughter and I do today...when they where 28! I think music is something from the heart and all I wanted to do was sing and dance from my soul! I would recommend John Prine to anyone looking to enjoy great timeless music...but I will never go back to Massey Hall!! Thank you Mr.Prine for the great memories and helping introduce my kids to great music that im sure they will share with there kids....one love....jenine daubney

    Prine comes through as always

by Jein on 2009-08-15Massey Hall - Toronto

John's voice was in fine form as he sung all the old favorites. Surprisingly, he didnt cover songs from Fair and Square , his 2006 Grammy award winning album, in favour of crowd pleasing songs from way back when. Backed up by an excellent stand up bass picker and bass/mandolin/harmonica player, the background music was beautiful. In lieu of jeans, the band was in black suits looking sharp.

    Prine was primed

    by mcd1 on 2009-08-15Massey Hall - Toronto

I was not familiar with John Prine and went with family who were committed fans. What a wonderful show. Many of the songs seems whimsical but hold deep meaning. Tears were falling with the song about Lake Marie and Daddy's got a hole in his arm where the money goes (I don't know the title). Energetic and lively. The bass and lead guitarists were fantastic. I was not impressed with the opening act at all, though! Overall a very heartwarming and thought provoking experience. I will look up his music.
