Johnny Marr found worldwide fame in the ‘80s with cult British band The Smiths. One of Britain's most famous guitarists, Marr has played in a number of successful bands such as Modest Mouse and The Cribs as well as becoming a renowned session musician.
After playing in a few bands and performing the odd solo gig in his mid-teens, Marr formed The Smiths with a poet and singer called Morrissey at the age of 18. They wrote the songs together and the band that formed in 1982 went on to become one of the truly iconic British acts of the ‘80s. Hit albums such as the self-titled The Smiths in 1984, Meat is Murder in 1985, The Queen is Dead in 1986 and finally Strangeways - Here We Come in 1987 became albums that helped define the era. Their music helped bring the guitar sound back to the mainstream, and their songs proudly stood as a musical backlash against the synth-pop chart music of the time. In 1987, creative differences led to the band splitting up, but thankfully their five-year run of huge success and critically acclaimed albums had already established Johnny Marr as one of the most influential songwriters and performers of the decade.
Marr stayed incredibly busy after The Smiths' time was up, playing sessions with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney and both recording and touring with established bands such as The Pretenders and The The. Essentially, from 1987 until 2002 Johnny Marr worked with everyone who was anyone in the UK music industry. Collaborations included working with Billy Bragg, Talking Heads, The Pet Shop Boys, Kirsty MacColl and Black Grape. He also made a special one-off appearance playing with Oasis in 2001, as well as working with them on some album tracks in the studio.
In more recent years he has toured and played with Modest Mouse extensively, including supporting R.E.M. on their US tour. Johnny is also a member of occasional super-group Seven Worlds Collide, which is made up from members of Radiohead, Crowded House and Pearl Jam. Together they have recorded a number of tracks to raise money for Oxfam. He also plays with The Healers and The Cribs, touring whenever he can. His solo album, The Messenger, was released through Warner Brothers in 2013 and Marr continues to be one of the very best live and studio artists.

Saw James & Johnny Marr here mid October. Fantastic show. Loved the venue. Balcony seating available or general admission. We were in GA. Bars on both sides and upstairs. Sound/acoustics/lighting… everything was great, no complaints. Saw Morrissey here a few years back too. Another great event. (I just won’t tell Morrissey & Johnny that I went to see both their gigs at the same place. If you’re in the know… that may be mildly funny.) Looking forward to another event there in time. Highly recommend MTELUS!
Great performances by both James and Johnny Marr. Great sound and lighting to enhance the overall experience. I was seated in the Balcony section, so very comfortable experience.
Actually an old James fan and went to see them open thinking Johnny F'n Marr why not? Exceeded all expectations. James had technical difficulties which made it sloppy but what they did they did well and nobody dances like Tim Booth. They were who they are relying heavily on their glory days of Laid. Johnny Marr was a rock guitar god. I actually didn't know if he'd venture into Smiths territory or not, but he did, and he delivers Smiths songs with a sort of (non stoned or drunk) Johnny Thunders Heartbreakers New York street style (which I guess is maybe also Manchester) but it takes away all the "look at me mope"Morriseyisms and just delivers it straight up rock and roll. Somehow it works and in many ways is better than the original (as brilliant as that was). Iggy Pop's The Passenger as the first encore a perfect fit. Marr should re-record everything the Smiths did in this style. It would be amazing. Just a great straight up rock and roll show.
Just disappointed that James weren't able to play some songs due on going technical challenges that they seem to have throughout the show. Also sad they didn't play "Sit Down". Good show otherwise.
Johnny Marr did not disappoint once again with an amazing show! Good energy, the playlist was impressive, lot's of fun. I had not seen back up band James before and they were SO GOOD, we are huge fans now!
Had a great time seeing James live again, venue was better then expected and it was a bonus to hear Johnny Marr play some of the Smith's classics!
Fantastic show - James was amazing and engaging and throughly enjoyable to see live but Johnny Marr was so unbelievably good, Such a good mix of Smiths, Electronic, and solo work. You will not be disappointed- does make your heart ache for a Smiths reunion tho - be warned.
A celebration of Marr's genius as a song writer and the brilliance of his melodic guitar style. His talent is awe inspiring and it was an absolutely emotional experience. His minimal set is gorgeous, keeping all the focus on the music - there no song and dance theatrics or other BS- this is a guitar rock as it should be. Highly recommended
Johnny plays some of the best Smiths and Electronic songs. The live Electronic songs are so good, since the guitar is much more conspicuous than the recorded versions and it sounds great. He is a top guitarist and the best in his style. I will see him every time he is in town!
What an incredible night! Tim Booth commanded the stage with his presence, and Johnny Marr proved once again why he's one of the greatest guitarists of all time!
Both physically and metaphorically hot. We have exceeded venue's mechanical system capacity, but still had a good time, in a sauna! Johnny is phenomenal!
awesome show, one of the best guitarists ever, solid show, almost 2 hours of straight ahead rock n roll. loved it
Great show. Great set list. Venue sight lines are terrible unless you’re right up front. It’s GA only. He said he’s coming back in November so hopefully he’ll play somewhere better like the Danforth Music Hall.
Johnny Marr's show at the Velvet Underground in Toronto was incredible. He was energetic, the whole band sounded amazing, he was funny and interacted with the audience. He played a perfect mix of Smiths songs and his solo stuff. Encore included a wonderful rendition of "There is a Light that Never Goes Out". Well worth every penny.
Intimate environment - he was so close regardless of where you stood. Show was a lot of fun.
Hearing Marr do a Smiths song makes me forget Morrissey!
Johnny Marr was in brilliant form with his guitar playing all evening. He did some great Smiths songs and some of his own material. His band was excellent.
This was the first time I had ever seen Johnny Marr play and man- what a show! Of course, I was only seeing him because I am such a huge fan of The Smiths and I had heard that he would be performing some of their songs so I was looking forward to that. What I did not expect was being really impressed with his solo stuff. The whole show was great - he is a consummate performer and a true guitar hero. His energy levels were through the roof as he bounced all over the stage making his riffs and licks look hella easy. He had someone else, a Canadian singer I have never heard of before - come out to sing Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want, and they did a great cover of Iggy Pop's Lust For Life. Overall a great show!
