So fun! They are so talented, it's crazy. The venue was very intimate.
Josh performs magnificently, so happy and always feeds off the crowd well. The Knox was beautiful once again!
What I expected from a Josh Ritter show was the same demure, soulful, singer-songwriter vibe from his albums. What I got was an incredible rock show I won't soon forget. I have never seen an artist so obviously enthusiastic and excited to be onstage performing. And his energy was contagious. It was a long show, at over 2 hours, and generally I would have been bored half way through, but this so was so totally enjoyable that I was happy to let it never end, and was actually sad at the prospect of having to go home. Ritter himself is a fascinating juxtaposition of boyish enthusiasm, experienced musical talent, and wise brilliantly crafted lyrics of someone twice his age. The entire band were tremendous musicians and their group chemistry was very tight and comfortable. At times Ritter played with the band and at times alone. When a fight started to break out among 2 concert goers during "Girl in the war", he smoothly handled it by walking away from the mic toward the would-be brawlers and encouraging them to sing along. Within seconds, the whole crowd was singing and the dispute was forgotten. It was an amazing night and a show I won't soon forget.
There were moments where I though Josh Ritter wouldn't be able to sing, he was smiling so hard. I struggled after the show to try and think of another performer who is so gushingly grateful and self-effacing, yet can charm the hearts of enough Vancouver music lovers to fill the Commodore Ballroom. I couldn't. But it's not just his stage presence that draws the crowds, his music is excellent. His range includes country, folk, and he is working hard to revive the ballad and doing an amazing job. He casts spells with his sweet folk lyrics and his heart-string pulling country songs, but his song writing shines in his ballads. They are clever and epic and timely and timeless. He played for just over two hours and generously sampled from all his albums. Basia Bulat's talent was a welcome introduction to the night and her songs are so darn catchy, I found myself singing her songs on my bike ride home. Great show.
Incredibly awesome, both bands were a pleasure to watch.
His energy and enthusiasm were infectious. What an amazing singer and songwriter! I can't wait until he returns to Vancouver. I've been listening to his music nonstop since seeing him.
