First of all, I’m a huge tennis fan so the Laver Cup was a big deal. Not my first tennis major event so I can actually make comparisons. There’s no doubt there was some tennis talent but the event itself had very little vibe. No doubt having the likes of Alcaraz and Djokovic missing from Team Europe was a big factor, but having the event a week after Davis Cup matches was probably bad timing for the big names. The Roger Federer interview was the highlight, worth waiting until 10:30 PM for that!
My biggest complaint was the venue and pricing. The sound on the screen was out of sync with the actual game play. You could hear the ball strike in real time and moments later hear the strike on the audio. Tennis is a quiet sport, that sort of thing is really noticeable. Same goes for on court interviews, it was like watching a badly dubbed movie, so annoying, best to avoid looking at the screen!
The Laver Cup emails touted that "you could listen to the commentary from the benches by logging onto the Arena wifi and scanning a QR code". Instructions would be available once you’re in the venue. First of all, the wifi is so bad that it kept crapping out. Secondly, even the ushers didn’t know where the QR code was. There were no postings around the arena, and the code that they put up on the video screen was definitely not detectable by my phone from that distance. Eventually I found an usher who had the code on a scrap of paper so I was fully able to experience the crackly, delayed feed. You would think that a venue that has the name "Rogers"plastered all over it would have functioning wifi, especially given that cell signals can’t penetrate the concrete walls. All this for a mere $350 a mid range seat, most of which seems to be fees and taxes. I doubt anyone reads these reviews, so if you did, thank you.
