Cameron Mackintosh presents the acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg's Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables. This brilliant staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed as "a reborn dream of a production" (Daily Telegraph).
Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and many more.
Can't go wrong, it is such a great story and musical.
I have seen Les Miserables many times. This production was exceptional in many ways. The new sets were breathtaking, the sound excellent and the cast superb. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Not impressed. Here's why: not suitable for children or young teens due to sexually explicit activity on stage. It seems that young people can't get away from sex in today's media and this play is no different. I understand the play background but they went too far with only adults in mind. We could have had the same point without acting out oral sex and doggy style on stage. Just shows the Director's lack of creativity and audience in mind that they couldn't get the point across without going overboard which is what they did. Secondly, I couldn't hear or understand the one character who plays the mayor/thief. Made the play a strain to hear and not enjoyable. Lastly, there was no air circulation! Very uncomfortable. I was told on this website that you could buy binoculars to rent yet no employee knew about it. Also, people using their cell phones in the dark was very distracting and painful to my eyes. I paid a lot of money for sex on stage and mumbling singing by the one character only to leave mid way. Waste of money and time.
Given all the heartache that Calgarians and southern Albertans have been facing with the floods this is just what was needed. Good people are real and there is always hope.
We left before intermission. The screeching of the vocals in those beautiful songs was so bad..... I'm sorry I am a fan, but perhaps they were not ready to open that night..... Awful seating, just saw heads, but heard music. Time to renovate the JUB. I WILL NEVER AGAIN PAY TO SEE SOMEONE'S HEAD. Take a page from movie Theatres. Renovate. Leaving was preferable to staying.
Peter Lockyer is my favorite Jean Valjean! I will definitely go watch Les Miserable again when he plays.
Overall I enjoyed the musical. I did find that the orchestra and the singers were so loud that it was distorted. Just because you turn up the music doesn't mean it becomes better to hear the music or understand the lyrics. Quite the opposite in fact. Or perhaps the acoustics are just poor at the QE. I have seen Les Miserables twice before, in London, England and in Vancouver. This was quite a long time ago. I found this production quite raunchy compared to the ones in the past and that was not really necessary. The set was poorly designed. But I still liked it because living out in the sticks I don't often get the opportunity to go to Vancouver or see live performances(by people).
The songs are lovely and the cast sang very good, better than the cinema one.
Everyone in our party of 6 found it hard to hear the words in the beginning - not sure whether it was the sound or the orchestra overwhelming the voices. Fortunately we all knew the story so it didn't bother us too much. For first-timers I think it would have been disappointing not to hear what the cast was singing about.
Fabulous music, acting and sets. Set changes were amazingly seamless. Special effects were incredible in their technology and effectiveness. Acting was superb. Production was spell binding and emotionally charged throughout.
Les Miserables was not as good as the last time they were in Vancouver. The stage setup was not as effective as the rotational platform used 20 yrs ago here in Vancouver. The Queen Elizabeth theatre is also a poor venue with seating so far away that you might as well close your eyes and use your imagination. It also took away from the tunnel scenesbeing so far away. As for the singing, it was an unfortunate lapse in the last note of Hear my prayer when Val John went flat on that last ending note. He chose a lower tone so as not to break his vocals but I remember 20 years ago a Val who conquered it to the last ending climax. It was electric and I still remembered it being amazing. Would I go again to this show in this venue? No.
We went to the Queen Elizabeth for my birthday and we were all wowed by the enormity of the voices and the set. Very moving.
Truly an amazing experience. The acting was superb and the voices were unbelievable. Such a powerful story some great special effects.
After seeing the movie, which is definitely on my favorites list, I was blown away by the live show. My Mom, my sister and I attended the matinee and it exceeded our expectations! I would highly reccomend Les Mis and could see it 1000 more times! The entire productions was absolutely brilliant and phenomenal!!!!! I truly hope it comes back to Vancouver!
I took our 14 year old daughter who loves les Miserables, with my mother and I was able to surprise, I asked her to check the tickets when er arrived to the Theater. She was blown away, our seats were fantastic I could see the heart and soul coming through from the actors. I'll be first in line when this comes back to Vancouver!!!!!
Great production! Saw it for the first over 15 years ago and instantly loved it--one of my favourite Broadway shows since. This one has a few more stage/scene trickery which was a welcome addition. The 2 kids in the show were excellent as they stood out for their brief roles. The 2nd half wore on a bit with not as much catchy tunes as the front half. Was hoping that they would re-hash some of the earlier tunes in the 2nd half but that didn't happen--too bad. Otherwise, really enjoyed our night---wife and daughter (13) loved it, while my 11 yr old son was at least interested in it and held on for the ~3hr duration.
It was amazing!!!! Go see it if you ever get the chance, this was my second time watching the play version and it was just epic! The show went smoothly and flawlessly, actors were spot on and thier voices were just splendid to listen to, even my mom whom I dragged out to see was utterly amazed
I'm a fan of the recent theatrical version of Lés Mis, and the 25th anniversary production done in London at the O2. With that being said, the Vancouver / QE production was decent and enjoyable. In my opinion, the cast was "ok" in general. I felt the music and singing was a bit rushed and hurried in the first half of the musical, but after the Intermission the pacing seemed better.
The show was great and superb. I would recommend it to my family and friends.
A fantastic show - way and above the best version I have seen of this incredible musical. I have five other versions and loved this the most by far. The new staging was amazing and I was captivated from the opening scene on when the waves splashed over the prow of the boat. From then on I was hooked. The sewer scene and Javert's suicide were amazingly well done. I cry each time I see it - I just have to hear the opening bars and the tears start (and I'm a 67 year old male!!!) but there is something about the musical that causes the tears to start flowing and this time was no exception. Each of the characters was strong - I particularly liked Marius who I thought did an incredible job on Empty Chairs at Empty Tables but Valjean's Bring Him Home was also wonderful as was Javert's Stars and i Loved Eponine's On My Own- in fact the whole thing was wonderful and I highly recommend this show to everyone. Listen folks: Go, go, go - you won't regret it.
