Itís a sultry, sassy, and majorly soulful concert experience that leaves no doubt Staples remains at the height of her powers.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Chicago-born Mavis Staples grew up performing in her familyís gospel band The Staples, singing at local churches and appearing on regional radio programs. The family scored a hit in 1956 with ìUncloudy Dayî, and when Mavis graduated high school the following year they went on tour. Thanks to Mavisí powerful voice and her fatherís sharp songwriting, the group enjoyed widespread success in the mid-ë60s, becoming one of the primary musical voices of the civil rights movement. Around that time Mavis struck up a relationship with Bob Dylan, who even proposed to her before she married Spencer Leak in 1964. Mavis made her solo debut in 1969 with a self-titled release on Stax Records then went on to collaborate with Curtis Mayfield in the ë70s, and in the ë80s she joined forces with Prince, who produced 1989ís funky Time Waits for No One and 1993ís critically acclaimed The Voice. In addition to her spiritual gospel output Mavis has remained musically adventurous over the years, collaborating with Bob Dylan on the GRAMMY-nominated 2003 song ìGotta Change My Way of Thinkingî and even making a foray into Americana with Jeff Tweedy, who produced her GRAMMY Award-winning 2010 album You Are Not Alone.

I drove across a border on a long weekend to see Mavis Staples... and I wanted to do it again the next night. What an amazing woman! She’s still got a powerful voice. And she knows how to use it. Band was super-talented too! I’d go see her again in a heartbeat. ❤️
Mavis and her band provided a solid performance that brought the audience back in time. Her voice was solid with great range. Her showmanship reflects her many years on the stage. Great band too! Love ya Mavis, Keep coming to Winnipeg
At 76 years of age Mavis still can bring it! She covered her and her family's amazing catalogue. She even did a great cover of the talking heads "slippery people", which the family covered in the late 80's. She was engaging and had the audience singing and clapping all night. Her backup band was also very strong.
Mavis Staples was fun, but not much great music there. Dr. John on the other hand - he is still amazing, still writes amazing music, and he has a band of VERY talented musicians who each hold their own. Awesome show!
Dr John & Mavis Staples were fantastic, they both put on spectacular shows! We were at the right place at the right time hope to see them again real soon especially the Dr!!! :-)
An excellent show - only wish the show had been longer!
Allen Toussaint opened the show and covered his entire song writing career with just piano, bass and drums. Incredible! Lots of little stories in between kept things very engaging. Excellent performance. Mavis Staples is a gospel legend second only to maybe Mahalia Jackson, and that's a big maybe. From the opening song and all the way through she was absolutely amazing. Her voice is as rich and powerful as it ever was. When she says she has the spirit in her you believe it! Her sister Yvonne is touring with her and that was an unexpected treat. The stand out in the accomanying trio has to be Rick Holmstrom. This wonderful roots style guitar player has a career of his own but did an admirable job of conjuring the ghost of Pops Staples while adding lots of twists and flair of his own. Great show, great band and a living legend. What more could you possibly ask for? Fantastic!
Mavis is well past her prime. She strains her voice beyond belief. Too much aggressive effect and not enough real singing.
Allen Toussaint was superb.Entertaining and skilled,I had no idea how much he had written. The second part was much too loud which spoiled the performance for me except one song which Mavis did with one accompanying guitar.I think she is compensating for an aging voice by turning up the volume.Otherwise it was stirring to hear one of my favourites,Mavis Staples live.
Toussaint and Band were a wonderful slice of New Orlean's music! Mavis had us up and shouting and her band cooked as well. Special surprise at the end Colin James just added to the evening.
