About

Marcus King faces heartache, addiction, and mental health head-on in his music. Pain quakes below the vibrato of his voice, and his delivery weighs heavy with booze-drenched regrets and mistakes in lonely hotels. The GRAMMY® nominated fourth generation musician from Greenville, SC, started playing guitar at 8-years-old following in the footsteps of his guitarist Father and Grandpa. Logging thousands of miles on the road as "The Marcus King Band," he established himself with unparalleled performance prowess. During 2020, he linked up with Dan Auerbach and cut his solo debut El Dorado, garnering a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Americana Album." Between headlining venues, he performed alongside Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathanial Rateliff in addition to gracing the bills of Stagecoach and more. He has launched various mental health initiatives, including a guitar auction collaboration with MusiCares. Now, his 2024 album Mood Swings feels like the moment of baptism when water washes away a life's worth of sins and degradation and all that's left is a revived, yet still real-as-hell primal scream. It's as if King strained raw soul straight from his gut up through that broken heart and on to the record under the watchful eye of Rick Rubin. Emphasizing his vocals front-and-center more than ever before, the trusty guitar he's so often associated with plays the sideman this time around (though there's no shortage of impressive shredding). For as dark as everything seemed, you can't help but feel a sense of hope in the power of Marcus's voice.

I had high expectations for this show. The Marcus King band surpassed those expectations. They blew the roof off the place. It was the Best show I have seen in a long time.

This is a great venue. I practically felt like I was standing next to Marcus as he was playing. I could actually see the joy on his face as he was playing Big Red .

  • Disappointed due to the sound

by Patrick on 2024-09-16Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

I have wanted to see Marcus King for years (Carolina Confessions was what got my attention). He is an incredibly talented musician, guitarist and singer. But the sound was so bad for much of the night, I could make anything out. The keyboard and second guitarist were super loud and overpowering and had way too much treble. I hope this gets addressed in future because he’d be amazing if you could hear him.

  • Sound issues

Real issues with the sound quality, loud is good when it is tuned properly this was not, muttled and harsh. Too bad cause the show was good, Marcus King is a very talented singer and guitarist, one of my favorites. Just saw Kenny Wayne in the same venue and it sounded amazing.

  • Massey Hall

by Stella on 2024-09-16Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus King was an amazing show, he's simply incredible. However the 300 area seating at Massey Hall is the pits. The front row, instead of sitting back in their seats, sat forward leaning on the railing. This blocked the view of the stage for everyone behind them for 4 rows. It ruined our experience and the staff asked them to sit back once at the beginning of the show by asking another concert goer to tell them. Of course, this didn't work and nothing else was done. Our experience was ruined, may as well have stayed home and listened to the radio as there are no screens to see the stage. We couldn't see the guitarist or the drummer for the entire show and got small glimpses of Marcus when the front row sat back in their seats. I wouldn't recommend buying seats in the 300's at the side for this reason and there is absolutely no legroom and the seats are very uncomfortable.

One of the best shows I've ever seen. A bunch of pros - so much range, and so much energy. Can't wait for the next one.

  • Crazy talent, but…

by Graham on 2024-09-15Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Marcus and his band are incredible. He is a generational talent. The only issue I have was that the sound was a mess. The volume was way way too loud for venue. To the point where it made the music just sound like mush and you couldn’t make out any of the vocals at times. And I’m not too old! I’ve gone to metal and hardcore shows for my whole life and never once thought they were too loud.
