Amazing! The costumes, the choreography was phenomenal. It was non stop dancing. The energy level of the dancers and the blend of traditional with modern music was well done.

Absolutely awesome dancing, wonderful costumes, and everyone on stage seemed to be loving every minute! Great to see such terrific dancing, that covered a century or more of dance in India.

    Unforgettable Event!

by Hina on 2010-11-07Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I loved the event, it was colourful, energetic, funny and beautiful! The dancers were amazing, the music divine and the story was powerful too. It was exciting to watch and I recommend everyone to see it, I took my european best friend and she loved it just as much! The fact that the dancers were all from Bollywood made the show even more authentic, and you can see that the dancers are the real deal from Mumbai! I will never forgot this show, one of my all time favourties!

Great energy, music and awesome dancing

by vauvert on 2010-11-07Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

We were a group of four attending, three generations and overall we all enjoyed it. The dancers are amazing, lots of energy and it was beautiful to see the combination of traditional Indian dancing (as non-Indian our knowledge is limited, granted) and modern dance. The reasons I am not giving it five stars: some of the "plot" / dialogue is corny; the sound level was too loud. Seriously. Not sure who thought we should feel our bone marrow vibrate, but maybe they can reconsider that. Otherwise it was a great show and a good purchase, recommend to anyone who enjoys Bollywood movies. The lead dancer (Singh) was unbelievable.

So much more than we anticipated. Costumes were colourful and beautfully designed. Music tastefully modern yet respectfully traditional. Non-stop, high energy dance - never a dull moment!!! Loved the story.....

Cell phones just about sank it

by Goodguy on 2010-11-06Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The Merchants of Bollywood was a lively, colourful show almost done in by the people taking pictures with their cell phones throughout the evening. Certainly botched our evening.

    Merchants of Bollywood wasn't good...

by DoubleR on 2010-11-06Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Merchants of Bollywood was full of color and dance interjected with a story based on a conflict between a grandfather and granddaughter to keep the family traditions alive. The set goes back and forth between rural india and bollywood. I felt like watching a bollywood movie live in person and was a mindnumbing entertaintment. Nothing spectacular to write home about. The dance routines were repetitive and boring after a while - just like watching a bollywood movie filled with 20 songs. If you are looking for a mindnumbing entertainment option, Merchants of Bollywood may be it.

    A disappointing mish-mash of a musical

by OrmondToronto on 2010-11-05Sony Performing Arts Centre - Toronto

I have to admit that I went to see the show expecting a spectacular extravaganza of Indian style, flare, and dancing interwoven with a solid dramatic story. What I actually saw was a very disappointing, albeit extremely well choreographed and executed MTV-style dance party with very little live singing, mediocre quality sets/costumes and an uninspiring story line. While the acting/dialogue were superb, they comprise but a very minimal part of the show - leaving the majority of the time to energetic dancing which is neither Western, nor Bollywood in style. Whoever described this show as "an Indian version of Billy Elliot" - a quote used quite often to promote this spectacle - did the creative team a great disservice by setting the expectations too high. Interestingly enough, the show - which is set in Bollywood - does very little to convey the sense of Bollywood style, culture and its lavish sets. The music is easily forgettable and, combined with a pretty weak plot line leaves little to be inspired by.
