    so upsetting

by pjones on 2010-11-14Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I was looking forward to this show since I heard it was coming to Toronto. I am Indian and grew up watching Bollywood with my family. Unfortunately this show fell short in so many ways. The script was horrendous and the acting reminded me of watching a school play....monotone and bad. I do enjoy musicals and realize that the script and acting is never amazing, however, Merchants of Bollywood took bad writing and acting to another level. The dancing, which was the point of the show was quite stunning. The audience was embarrassing. I felt like I should have been watching a Bollywood film at Albion Cinemas with the way that the fellow audience members were acting. There wasn't a silent moment in the theatre. People kept on getting up and moving seats, talking amongst themselves and eating loudly. Overall, not worth my money...although I did enjoy the dancing a lot, the entire experience fell far short of expectations.

    Boohoowood

by DadioD on 2010-11-13Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Dance numbers with full cast on stage - sensational Dance numbers with small groups - mostly forgettable Dialogue - so-so No real involvement with the characters. Not enough 'meat' to hang around the blockbuster dance numbers.

    Kaleidescope of Life

by Anandiya on 2010-11-13Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

This musical production is both energetic and insightful. It shares a glimpse into the incredible and passionate Bollywood culture. This amiable and buoyant show benefits from the talents of Vaibhavi Merchant (Choreographer), Bipin Tanna (Costume Designer) and a fantastic ensemble. Whether it's the music, the beautiful outfits or the moves, there is an allure that makes this show simultaneously funny and entertaining. Audiences will be tempted to learn a few Bollywood dance moves themselves...

    Wonderful Show!

by Protokletos on 2010-11-13Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The show was full of great performers, dancers, songs, and had a lot of energy. Although the story line tends to be a bit dull at times; the music and dancing makes up for most of it!

Indian Music and Choreography are Fun

by MrMartDen on 2010-11-13Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

A lot of colour, rythme, nice costum, no dead time. The story is well told. Accoustic was fine and not aggressive to the listener. The dancers and the choreography were done candidely which is the quality that comes out of the show. The ending choreography (Disco) was excellent.

    The Merchants of Bollywood

by Shalomar on 2010-11-13Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I would recommend this show to anyone who likes music and great dancing. The storyline was kept simple to show off the amazing routines that were choreographed. It takes you from the traditional style of dancing right through to a more modern style for today's younger generation. The selection of costumes were very colorful and stunning to look at. The show was very engaging allowing the audience to join in and dance, when to cast came down into the audience to get some dancers!

All about the dancing and the music!

by Chellabelle on 2010-11-13Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Anyone going to see this for a story will be disappointed, but if you're there for the music, the dancing, and the costumes you will love this. Highly entertaining, and for the women, Uday is quite ab-tastic and the costume designer...who we love...took full advantage of this.

    Merchants was great

by Golda on 2010-11-10Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I thought the Merchants of Bollywood's dancers were just fantastic and sooo talented. I loved watching them. However, I had hoped to hear live singing and some live music with traditional instruments or any type of instrument. The live music aspect was severely lacking - and took away from the experience.

by Sterzy on 2010-11-10Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I wasn't a big Bollywood fan previous to this performance, but I did watch a couple films. As a regular theatre goer I decided to take the young lady out to something different and I was pleasantly surprised!! The dancing was was exceptional LIVE and the storyline and humour kept me very entertained!! Overall I recommended this show to my friends who weren't familiar with Bollywood Culture.

    refreshingly crisp and spellbinding

by Naushad on 2010-11-09Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The Merchants of Bollywood took me by surprise. Firstly, it started on time which is rare for an east indian event, and secondly kept me spellbound to the very end. The standard of the performance was unrivalled, the flow of the storyline seamless and the theatre hall itself well suited for this event. May we see more productions of this calibre.

Merchants of Bollywood was just OK

by Showtunes4 on 2010-11-09Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I enjoyed the performance and glad I attended the show, but I was not blown away. I give 5 stars to the performers for their incredible energy, but only 3 stars to the show itself. The storyline was a bit cheesy and hard to follow. There was supposed to be a falling out between granddaughter and grandfarther over style of dance, but it was very difficult to understand or see this difference in styles. The attempt to tell this story was just OK, not great. Dance routines were top notch, although a bit repetitive throughout the show. I previously saw Bombay Dreams which blew me away. I guess I was expecting the same reaction for this show and it did not happen. By the way, someone has to do something about the audio for the speaking parts, it was awful. Almost impossible to understand.
